Happy Hour Open Thread: Pelosi Tanks In Torture Poll

* Gallup does a poll on the torture fight, and finds Nancy Pelosi faring worst of all the parties involved. Click to enlarge:

Fifty-two percent approve of the CIA’s handling of the torture mess, while only 31% approve of Pelosi’s handling of it. The GOP checks in somewhere in between, with 40% approving of its performance on the story.

* Newly-minted Dem and sudden team-player Arlen Specter keeps up his aggressive defense of Pelosi.

* FactCheck.org does a fact check of Pelosi.

* Marcy Wheeler responds with a fact check of FactCheck.org. You decide who won.

* Obama got taken by Cheney — though not how you’d expect.

* Ben Smith says the SEIU is going soft on Obama over the pay-cut to California homecare workers.

* A poll released just hours after the RNC condemned the Democratic Party for marching us towards “socialism” finds that 63% like Obama’s economic policies — and a majority blames Republicans for the economic mess.

* Is the Cheney Torture Tour working? His popularity has gone up eight points, but George W. Bush’s has also edged up, too, and he’s remained in the undisclosed location once reserved for Cheney.

* And the National Rifle Association warns members to “prepare for the storm.” It’s unclear what the “storm” is, but one imagines it has something to do with an imagined coming reaction to Democratic control.

Wow, Marcy Wheeler destroyed FactCheck.org. Not even close.

“Republicans (66%) are slightly more likely than independents or Democrats (each 59%) to be following the matter closely.”

Doesn’t this explain why Pelosi got the lowest marks among those saying they are paying the most attention?

Greg -re Cheney and Bush polling… that makes sense. Cheney is pushing a set of notions which are designed to improve the appearance of the Bush administration and its choices/polices/thinking. Bush’s polling numbers would be affected along with Cheney’s.
This is in large part because Cheney is effective at this game. Conversely, if Bush had been the one in front of the cameras and interviewers over the last three months, it’s certain the trend would be in the other direction.

Washington media is in full-court press to defend the rump bushies and the cheney acolytes. Dems are left flat-footed once again. This was totally predictable, and the strategy was laid out here:

Once again, the Dems blow it on strategy.

“Once again, the Dems blow it on strategy.”

O for heaven’s sake – we’re in charge, remember? We don’t have to play that game. Elections aren’t til 2010. I think you can relax a bit because the news cycle isn’t running on the same RPMs that blogs and bloggers run on. You watch – this will change by tomorrow afternoon. I’ll bet you.

I disagree, Tena. I think they *always* have to “play that game” and by that I mean the media message management game. I will never forget what they did to the Clinton presidency. The Republican message machine is always in motion, and the Dems better learn how to build their own.

And the National Rifle Association warns members to “prepare for the storm.”

They must be worried about the primary challenge to gun-rights supporter Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) from Stormy Daniels..  I’ll bet they’re locked, loaded, and ready to shoot their wad in his defense.

The good news – is buried in the credit card bill, was the provision allowing me to bring my firearms into national parks! Thanks liberals!

This is all huff and puff -not much to see here.

    gitmo is still open
we still kill civilians in the middle east
    troops are still in iraq
    the economy is still imploding
    warrentless wiretaps are still allowed
gay marrage is still against the law
**** in the military are still kept in the closet

hope and change sounds really good until your pension fund evaporates – and how many pensions are heavily invested in GM?

Bail out the banks and the car companies… but the Indiana firefighter’s pension fund… screwed.

have fun folks – keep hoping for change!

    John
    .
What sucks for you is that even if everything you just said was correct, the majority of Americans would still take President Obama over the best the Rethugs have to offer.

Have a nice weekend. I’m flying to ABQ tomorrow morning and driving to Taos to clean my house.

    I’ll be back Monday.

  11. John | May 22nd, 2009 at 07:06 am

    But it is correct –

Doesn’t suck for me -watching you back the same things you were against last year – it is simply one of the funniest things ever.

I’m enjoying the show. Rethugs? that’s original – can I use that?

Remember to raise a glass this weekend for all those who never came home.

Methinks you doth protest way way way too much.

Nothing is the same and you’re going to eat your words when Obama closes Gitmo and brings troops home from Iraq.

I’m tired of hearing about Nancy Pelosi. The repubs, with the whole hearted help of the media, don’t seem to be able to talk about anything else. It amazes me that the whole torture debate has been buried by what one person said that really has nothing to do with anything.

I want to hear about healthcare, jobs, energy – issues that matter NOW.
