Department Of Justice Hires Blog Outreach Person
Here’s an interesting sign of the times: Obama’s Department of Justice has hired someone to do new media outreach for the whole department — the first time Justice has created such a role.
A source confirms that Justice has tapped Tracy Russo, who did blog outreach for John Edwards’ presidential campaign, as the agency’s chief new media outreach expert. The hire reflects a recognition that some of the most important coverage of stories involving the Justice Department is taking place on the blogs.
One of the biggest stories involving Justice in very recent years — the U.S. Attorney purge scandal — was broken by my alma mater, Talking Points Memo, and unfolded there and subsequently on other blogs. The blogs have helped drive other Justice stories this year, such as the release of the torture memos and the debates over how to dial back Bush-era executive power.
It’s also worth keeping an eye on the broader trend: More and more government agencies, as opposed to political campaigns, are hiring blog outreach people to engage and manage coverage in the blogosphere, which is playing an increasingly influential role in policy fights, not just political ones.

We are all bloggers now. lol
This obviously is a means to control information. Just another token of Obama’s socialist dictatorship. It’s so un-American. Kind of like Sotomayor’s last name.
Chris, you are so right to pick up on the concern about Sotomayor’s last name. I just tried googling for the most likely translation. It probably is Spanish for sacred copse, which means she must be from a family/tribe of people who practice secret, pagan rites with trees. I’m seriously worried. Greg, are you looking into this?
Here’s her bio at HuffPo.
Sheesh. Couldn’t the DoJ have picked some old white man, just to avoid the inevitable charges of racism???
.
I checked out the link, jzap, and see Russo’s work “has been routinely praised as the best in the field.” What’s with the DOJ’s new interest in excellence? Don’t they have any respect for precedent?
DoD has been running blogger roundtables for quite awhile now. Took a few tries to get the kinks out so it wasn’t just a “warbloggers” dominated process. But now there’s a whole clan of “milbloggers” of various political persuasions, as well as various service focus (e.g. marines, navy), doctrinal persuasions (COINistas and their opponents), techies, DARPA-groupies, and so forth. Bloggers range from retired military to hobbyists to professional bloggers. DoJ should learn some lessons from DoD.
The DoJ move may have something to do with Phil Carter, former milblogger, then on Obama campaign on vets issues etc, and now w/ DoD to deal with detainee issues (a nightmare job). I assume he’s having to deal with DoJ on all of the legal mess surrounding the problems. If DoJ hasn’t consulted him on DoD’s “blogger roundtable” experiences, they ought to.
Think they are trying to get someone in place before Holder has to announce yet more uncomfortable-for-the-left DoJ decisions?
Greg – has she announced any weekly blogger conference calls yet? Are you dialled in?
I suppose her most important job will be reining in Greenwald . . .
Yes, a crusty old white man would have been a much better choice. Smith or Jones or Hannity– Irish works best actually. But Sotomayor is ridiculous. It’s a good think Harriet Miers pronounced her name as American as possible. And not like its original German pronunciation of a long E. She had the foresight to pronounce it as un-German as possible, as a long I as in Einstein. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this stuff out. Viva Bush!
Great idea, but will this work over the long run?

I really like this blog good job.
Great site, how do I subscribe?
I used a web analytics tool called sitelogr.com to review the White House site (http://www.sitelogr.com/s/whitehouse.gov) and the site is hosted off-shore in the UK. Netcraft also shows that it’s hosted in the UK: http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://whitehouse.gov
How interesting… why is the service hosted off-shore in the UK – Cambridge to be exact? What are the implications for information related to national security and personal information collected on private citizens by Obama’s snitches on health care (flag@whitehouse.gov)?
The Presidential Records Act of 1978 mandates certain record management procedures that are probably being violated, but I haven’t done a full analysis yet. The Presidential Records Act is outlined here: http://www.archives.gov/about/laws/presidential-records.html
