Small Town To Liz Cheney: We Want Gitmo Detainees, Not Your Fearmongering
Officials in a small Michigan town featured in a new video about Guantanamo by Liz Cheney’s national security group want her to know that they’re not falling for her “fearmongering” — and tell us they want Gitmo detainees in their town.
Cheney’s group, Keep America Safe, has released a short documentary starring several residents of little Standish, Michigan, slamming the Obama administration over a proposal to transfer some Guantanamo detainees to the town’s maximum security facility, one of several facilities being discussed.
The vid, which is below, ominously warns that unnamed “politicians” want Gitmo detainees placed in their “small farm town,” without saying who the politicians are or whether they’re Federal or local. A resident says those politicans “aren’t listening to us little people in Standish.”
But Standish’s City Manager tells us that local leaders and residents want the facility, and dismissed Cheney’s efforts as “fearmongering.”
Cheney is “certainly not representing the views of our community,” the City Manager, Michael Moran, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson.
While some local residents do appear to have expressed mixed feelings or opposition to the plan, Moran says that they’re an isolated minority that Ms. Cheney’s video elevates out of proportion in a way that’s “off base.”
What’s more, the Standish city council recently passed a unanimous resolution expressing support for bringing Gitmo detainees, citing job losses in the wake of the closing of the facility.
Seems that the good people of Standish just don’t have Liz Cheney’s understanding of the nature of the threat.

Talk ’bout small towns and the Cheneys, anybody here ever been to Wyoming? I spent a night here once. One of the most isolated areas I’ve ever been, and I’ve been in some pretty desolate places. One of the towns on that highway had a sign that said, kid you not, Population: 6.

Of all the reasons the Republicans don’t want a public trial for purported terrorists is that we’re likely to find out that Osama Bin Laden had nothing to do with the 9/11 terrorist attacks and probably didn’t even know about the attacks until after they happened.
Another fact that might come to light is that the Bush administration was actually warned not only that the attacks were coming, but also the exact date of the attacks and the reasons for the attacks. While G.W. Bush is an incompetent idiot, Dick Cheney is not. However, Cheney is a bully and a coward, and he defied the terrorist warnings and essentially dared them to attack.
Some time later in the Bush administration, a Texas lawyer who learned of the administration’s deception threatened to disclose what he knew and that’s why Cheney shot him in the face thereby laying down the law and demonstrating his immunity from the law.

I live in NW Illinois, not far from Thompson where a new prison facility has sat mostly empty for eight years. The Feds are considering taking it over and housing federal inmates, possible including “terrorists”. To those I meet who are fearful, I simply tell them that if they are hassled by a terrorist to let me know, and I will personally kick his *** for them.
Security and detention are one of the few growth industries left and we need the jobs out here. I hope the deal goes through and the sooner the better.

Liz Cheney and her husband have spent a huge portion of their careers feeding at the government trough or at private firms with fat government contracts. One of her previous careers in government was colluding with Daddy in trying to influence foreign governments in ways that were at cross purposes with the State Department during the Bush Administration (I kid you not). One of many questionable activities she’s been involved in. Now she going to “Keep America Safe” and of course that includes the good citizens of Standish who want to earn a little government money themselves while doing useful work that benefits us all. I say earn because I doubt they have the nepotism opportunities that Ms. Cheney has enjoyed and must earn what they get. Who is she to interfere with their decisions? Michigan is not a foreign country. Doesn’t she trust the competence of Americans? Hi, I think Bush, Cheney and all REPUBLICANS who ever got elected to office and vote for wars are evil, chickenhawk cowards.
However, I voted for Clinton who was an admitted Draft Dodger and sent men to die in Somalia but it’s ok, cause he’s a Democrat, so he get’s a pass.

I lived near Standish for over 30 years. It is a small, rural “up north” Michigan community that depended on farming, trade from tourists going to their cabins and a number of retirees. Its economy has always been close to the edge as far as I could see. Something like ten or so years ago MI built a prison facility there that provided a lot of jobs. MI is now closing that prison. There has been talk of bringing prisoners from other states to fill it. But that hasn’t been worked out yet. So, the prison jobs will be lost and with it a significant chunk of their economic base.
Would the fed gov’t hire locals? Certainly not for all the jobs but that would mean that they would bring more people into the community. This would support a sagging real estate market and all other service providers across the community. It would also mean that some of those workers who are losing their jobs would be able to sell their homes when they find jobs elsewhere.
As for many of the other claims, such as the taking of land to provide a perimeter. Who knows if this or most of the other issues that have been used to work on people’s emotions is true? This piece is fear mongering at its best.
It amazes me that anything that provides jobs and enlarges the economic base anywhere in MI would receive this kind of treatment. MI needs JOBS.

Lets see where the fearmongering came from. It came from the attacks on GITMO. There is nothing wrong with Gitmo. Gitmo has been investigated and inspected by the Red Cross and dozens of Democrats. They all admit that its a model facility and detainees are treated very well. Fearmongering is why it is being closed.

Ms. Chenney is a disgrace. Everything that comes out of this woman’s mouth is either a lie or just way off base. I think she suffers from a mental disorder. She makes a fool out of herself everytime she speaks.
The person talking about jail house conversions is simple confused as well. Many of the prisoners coming to the US speaks no English and won’t be in the general population with domestic prisoners and will have zero contact with potential converts. Like Ms. Chenney you are wrong again. You need to go watch something other than FOX Noise so you can make logical comments. T Bagger!
I live in fresno and if MI or Il does not want them we will take them. Unemployment here is 20%. We like eating as much as Mi and IL.
Gitmo needs to be closed because it’s use as a torture facility by the Republicans has given all of US a bad reputation internationally.

Apparently, you don’t watch the REAL news. The detainees in Gitmo are SUSPECTS, not terrorists. They are innocent until proven guilty. Better read the Constitution, for once. Everyone in the U.S., not just U.S. citizens are protected by it.
Also, the suspects will be completely isolated from the other prisoners, so there is no danger of converting nonviolent drug offenders or any prisoners into Muslim controlled killing machines.
Besides, they don’t “hate our freedoms”. They hate our freedom to prop up brutal regimes and to wage imperialist, genocidal wars OF terror against innocent third world countries so we can steal and control their natural resources, regardless of which political party controls D.C.
