GOP Leaders Still Say No To White House IMF Funding, Despite Hezbollah Loss

I noted here the other day that one of the key reasons GOP leaders John Boehner and Eric Cantor have been saying No to a measure backed by the White House and Congressional Dems for additional funding for the International Monetary Fund is that the cash could allegedly fall into the hands of terrorists.

The basis for that claim, which some House Dems have also signed on to, is that Hezbollah apparently might have been on track to get its hands on some of the IMF cash. That led Boehner to say recently that the money, which Obama wants and would be included in the huge new war-spending bill now inching through the House, “could line the pockets of terrorist regimes around the world.”

So how does the news that a pro-Western bloc has defeated Hezbollah in Lebanon elections, meaning Hezbollah won’t be getting the IMF cash anytime soon, impact the GOP leadership’s position?

It doesn’t. Spokespeople for Boehner and Cantor confirm that both still oppose the IMF funding, apparently on the grounds that the spending is fiscally irresponsible.

Back to the drawing board.

Update: Spokespeople for both Boehner and Cantor add that they still worry that the IMF cash could go to terrorists, claiming that other countries who are “state sponsors of terror” could be in line to receive IMF money.

Greg, is there any scheduling out there that puts Palin together with Liz Cheney? That would be the perfect odd couple picture to go with the GOP’s odd looking future.

There are plenty of liberal progressives who are against the increased IMF funding for a variety of reasons.

To be against this (or any other) policy is fine. To lie through your teeth about why you are against it is quite something else. Men of virtue, these two ain’t.
