Sotomayor Fight Eroding What’s Left Of Latino Support For GOP?
New poll numbers really seem to bear out the fears of some Republicans: The GOP’s quasi-opposition to Sotomayor seems to be hurting the party among Latinos in a big way.
The latest numbers from the nonpartisan Research 2000 for Daily Kos find that only eight percent of Latinos view the party favorably, while an astonishing 86 percent view it unfavorably.
That’s a real shift from what were already pretty bad numbers from before the Sotomayor nominatino, when 11% of Latinos viewed the GOP favorably, and 79% viewed it unfavorably.
One of the big stories today is that Republicans are realizing that there’s no political percentage in fighting the Sotomayor nomination. It’s striking that Latino opinion about the GOP is dropping so fast, even at a moment when GOP opposition to Sotomayor appears to be flagging, as opposed to intensifying.
This continuing drop among Latinos, coming at a time when many party strategists recognize the party’s desperate need to broaden its appeal, only reminds us that not only are there few apparent upsides in opposing Sotomayor, there are potentially serious costs, too.

Yet the coverage given to the Republicans on talk shows and on cable confrontations always imply that the parties are balanced; and almost without excption the Republicans outnumber the Democrats in talking head **** by 3 to 1.
Well you have to remember Greg that there are still some insults going on that aren’t verbal insults. Like Inhofe refusing to meet with Judge Sotomayor and Corker leaving because she was 10 minutes late due to having to limp around with her casted ankle. Besides that I keep saying that stuff like youtube and twitter can make a story last a lot longer than people would ever want them to. I am sure there are clips of people calling her an Affirmative Action pick still being forwarded in emails all over this country.
.
Oh and one more reason perhaps is Pat Buchanan and his ilk continuing to push this racist meme no matter what the reprecussions. He had some kind of roundtable discussion on it over the weekend.
.
The damage has already been set in motion but its going to be awhile before you can just just how much self immolation the Republicans unleashed on themselves with their unhinged rants.
ElRushbo’s label as the voice of the Republican party is excellent news for the Republican party when he comes out with classy phrases like “I think I’m going to send Sotomayor, and her club, a bunch of vacuum cleaners to help them clean up after their meetings.”
.
If Democrats mobilize and energize the Hispanic population of Texas by 2016 the GOP can say buh bye to the WH for the next 100 years.
Interestingly Alex Castellanos speaks for Republicans on CNN Situation Room, and when it comes to Sotomayor he cringes when reminded of another Inhofism.
@alan great point! i get upset thinking about how Rep dominate cable tv but then they open their mouths & do usually end up saying stupid things to hurt themselves. Its almost too easy at this point to pick on them.
What’s impressive here is that the GOP’s making George W. Bush look smart by comparison, since at least Bush grasped the importance of appealing to Latinos, and even attempted immigration reform. An impressive feat, indeed.
more of the same, GOP! more of the same! You betcha! Pretty soon the GOP will be small enough that we can drown it in Grover Norquist’s bathtub.
“I am sure there are clips of people calling her an Affirmative Action pick still being forwarded in emails all over this country.”
I really think there’s a lot more of that going on than most news junkies realize. We’re so used to following the latest story that we lose sight of the fact that news is slow reaching to people who aren’t reading blogs all day long. And the resentment lasts a lot longer than people realize; particularly thanks to YouTube. And that’s something Republicans still haven’t absorbed. Back in the day, a story would only last as long as the media would keep reminding us about it. But from now on, the video and audio clips are there forever and can be accessed at will. The media, which pretty much had already stopped being a gatekeeper, has now been replaced completely. And no amount of Republican manipulation can change that. They’re screwed.
This all supposes that elections are in the long term plans of conservatives.
Well, the other thing about this is that it is having an impact in the moderate Anglo community too. This is not a good thing for the Republicans. But they can’t help themselves.
The GOP strategists, like Karl Rove, who talked about wooing the Latino vote never really thought it through. Aside from tokenism (Alberto Gonzalez), the Rethugs really can’t give Latinos anything policy-wise without infuriating their redneck, racist base. They are condemned to swirl down the drain, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.
Tony Shifflett: Well, the other thing about this is that it is having an impact in the moderate Anglo community too. This is not a good thing for the Republicans. But they can’t help themselves.
Sure is.
I’m white, but my wife is Mexican. Certainly good to know that Republican leaders like Rush Limbaugh think my wife — a director at her company, compensated $150k+ — should be vacuuming the office building after work.
At least Elida gets to drink from the regular water fountain.
jvill-according to Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich, the ‘real’ leaders of the GOP, your wife is only there thanks to affirmative action. There’s no possible way a non-white could get so far ahead in the world (like the well-known NFL affirmative action program for black quarterbacks like Donovan McNabb) without the help of affirmative action, because we all know how inferior the mud races are to the Aryan master race.
Yep, Sotomayor is the real racist here! You betcha! Megadittoes!
Your (former) boss believes that he has seen deeper into this pond than you have. He has declared that the GOP is conflicted about Sotomayor because on the one hand they want Hispanic votes, yet on the other they’re intrinsically racist.
Wow! Where else in the world can one find such ankle-deep insight?
By the way, “statistically significant” doesn’t always mean “significant.” You guys need some assignments.

I’m hoping there’s someone out there who will point out to Latino voters that the Republicans’ “pick” for Latino representation in its administration was Gonzales — someone so incompetent he couldn’t have improved the public’s view of Latinos — while the Democrats recognize & choose Sotomajor, someone with incredible credentials.
Which action do you think will be more effective in showing Latino votes the party takes them seriously?
@Mauimom:
That’s the GOP for ya:
Sarah Palin: “You want tits, America? We got tits!”
Michael Steele: “You want a negro, America? We got a negro!”
Alberto Gonzales: “You want a wetback, America? We got a wetback!”
They just don’t get it.
What is interesting is the Cuban portion of Latinos. Cubans could be counted as strong Republican votes. I don’t know the numbers, but there has to be large numbers of Cubans who now favor the Democrats.
This is just one more sign that the big cycle has turned, and that now the Republicans are where the Democrats were in the 1980s: Can’t do anything right, but don’t know what the hell to do about it.
That Research 2000 poll has a lot more bad news for Republicans than their Latino support. Support for the GOP among blacks is 3% and is less than 10% in the Northeast, among 18-29 year olds, and other racial/ethnic groups (Asian-Americans, Jewish people, etc.) That’s “token level” support. Women barely break the token level at 16% and support for Republicans in the MidWest and West is barely into the 20’s.
It’s really a disastrous poll for the Republicans and you would think that they would respond to this kind of thing by actually trying to appeal to somebody.
But I think they’re going the other way and becoming more purist in their orientation and offensive to the vast majority of Americans. The mainstream media hasn’t caught up to that yet, but they don’t seem to be making much of a difference either.
Superb. Worth able tips.
