Polls: Support For Stimulus Package Rises
Last week I noted several polls that seemed to show support for the economic recovery package was dropping, but now we have a couple of new surveys that show a clear jump in public backing for it.
Gallup is now finding that support for the stim package has risen to 59%, up from 52% a week ago. A majority of independents also supports it.
Separately, a new Rasmussen poll finds that support for the package has jumped to 44%, up from 37% last week.
The key here, as Eric Kleefeld notes, is that Rasmussen was the one being cited by opponents of the stim package as proof of eroding support for it. What’s more, Ras polls have consistently found lower support for the package than other surveys.
Both these polls were taken in the last few days, when the package was getting heavy media attention and there was a growing sense that an agreement was getting closer, both of which could have rallied support.
It’s also possible that it took awhile for President Obama’s newly aggressive pro-stimulus campaign to sink in and start working.
(why am I not surprised? Oh yeah, because the public loves Obama and it doesn’t trust the Republicans.)
and Greg – please tell your commenting system to get off my back because I type fast. I don’t post comments too quickly, beyotch.
what’s the system doing, tena?
O every once in awhile when I hit submit, I get a page with a message telling me to slow down, I’m posting too fast. What’s odd is that it did that this time on my comment on this thread. It’s very confusing…because I’m easily confused.
Something interesting I heard on NPR this morning: how exactly did the stim bill end up being under 800 billion when both parties were pushing for programs that would have made it way over that?
It’s not everyday that Congress pays less, not more than what they’ve publicized/pushed for.
Also, they’re clearly not polling Wall Street when they do this — did you see what the market did Tuesday when the Senate passed?
Ack! What I meant to say was that that was my first comment on this thread, and it didn’t make sense to tell me I was going too fast. It just must have misfired -
did you see what the market did Tuesday when the Senate passed?
Yes and then I read that Obama said: See? Geithner makes Wall Street nervous. Obama obviously doesn’t think that’s a bad thing.
Plus, I’ve read a couple of stories that pointed out that this really is a big win for Obama – he got what he asked for.
The folks on the right put some effort into trying to spin a narrative that Obama’s press conference was “ponderous”, “boring”, etc and that he “wasn’t connecting with real people”. Clearly, they have their fingers on each other’s pulse.

I understand that you have some friends at your former abode who know how to put videos together. If I may make a suggestion, perhaps they can find clips of Republicans who are against the stimulus bill being asked if they will ask their state to refuse the funds. I know so far that several Republicans have been asked that question most notably SC Governer Mark Sandford and SC Senator Lindsey Graham. They could make a montage out of all of these hypocrites bashing the bill then saying they would be crazy to refuse the funds. I would do it but I have no clue about stuff like that.

And somebody call John Cornyn’s office and ask him how come he was meeting Repug donors instead of voting on the most important bill he’ll probably ever have a chance to vote on.
On top of everything else, he’s a merde du poulet. [I have no idea if that really is French for chicken excrement...]
And by the way – ask Cornyn what he’s going to say to the administrations of every single town and village and incorporated crossroads in Texas – cause I don’t think there is a single one that hasn’t put in a request for something from the stimulus package.
Unfortunately, I’m one of ******* Johns constituents – I have called Cornyns office, emailed them, and contacted the Houston Chronicle…funny there’s no local mention whatsoever of Cornyns absence. (snark). Houston is starting to feel the pinch – much later than other states, but locally I’ve been hearing a lot about payroll freezes, hiring freezes, and layoffs the last 2 weeks. At some point, residents will have to question exactly who Cornyn is representing.
Nice post! GA is also my biggest earning. However, it
Sounds to me like you really know what you are talking about here for sure.
