Minnesota Supreme Court: We Didn’t Say We’re Ruling On Franken-Coleman Today

The rumor out of Minnesota is that the Supreme Court is going to hand down a decision on the Norm Coleman-Al Franken mess today, which would be a huge deal.

But I just spoke with a spokesperson for the Minnesota Supreme Court, and she told me that no notification has gone out to either side that a decision is coming. That makes it less likely, though not impossible, that the court is ruling today.

The basis for the rumor is a local blog posting that claimed that a decision was coming today, according to “two sources on different sides of the Minnesota U.S. Senate race recount scene.”

According to Minnesota Supreme Court spokesperson Lissa Finne, there are two ways the court indicates a decision. Either it notifies counsel on both sides early in the week that a decision is coming on Thursday, or, in time sensitive cases, notification goes out right before a decision is released.

Finne tells me that no notification has gone out from the court to counsel on either side, which makes it unclear how it is that the blog’s sources would have heard this. “I don’t know where they got that from,” Finne says.

That said, it’s still possible that the court will issue sudden notification that a ruling is coming. But if this is going to happen, there’s no way anyone would know about it. At any rate, stay tuned.

O for heaven’s sake – it’s the middle of June and Franken won that election last November. This is ridiculous.

    Really really really ridiculous.

This is an important matter to a lot of us and likely for a lot of different reasons. My wife and I had a long drive on the weekend and tossed the “Lying Liars” audiobook into the CD player. I love this guy a lot. Smart as hell with a deep sense of irony and a serious distaste for deceit and hypocrisy. I’m personally invested in this outcome far more than almost all others.

Yeah, one person on the dem side who voted, and one person on the repub side who voted in the MN Senate race …. qualify as “two sources on different sides of the Minnesota U.S. Senate race recount scene.”

    and there you have it

You aren’t alone. There are a lot of us who really want to see Franken take his seat in the Senate for all the reasons you named plus -

Tena – we are as one (though with clothes on)

The MN recount was an exercise in proper democracy — until the MN Supreme Court got involved and started dragging its feet. Good God, Bush v. Gore was decided (though incorrectly) in about three days. And these MN judges have taken what, three months??? No rush guys, no rush at all!

Although I’m not from Minnesota, I am a political junkie.

Off the top of my head, I want to say that the LONGEST it took for a US Senator to be seated was about one year after the election.

At this point, the Republicans in the US Senate have given every indication that they will fight Franken from being seated even if the Minnesota SC rules in his favor. And that’s assuming that Coleman doesn’t take it to the US Supreme Court.

I’m sorry, but all of this means that the citizens of Minnesota get cheated every day this goes on.

Even flipping a coin would be better than this for them.

“I’m sorry, but all of this means that the citizens of Minnesota get cheated every day this goes on.”

O I agree. If I lived in Minnesota, I’d be madder than hell.

  9. DP | June 18th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

I DO live in MN and I am mad.

That said, I think the MN supreme court is going to make sure they dot all i’s and cross all t’s so that their decision (which will almost certainly be for Franken) is respected.

I also think that Pawlenty’s decision not to run for re-election makes it far less likely that Coleman will appeal the decision ro federal court.

So be patient, I think the end is near. . .

No, they didn’t say *publicly* they were ruling on Franken-Coleman today. They’re not allowed to say anything about any case publicly. This means nothing.

I’m wearing my Al Franken — Democrat for U.S. Senate T-shirt to work today… just in case!

Franken is probably one of the only people on Earth that I consider myself a fan of. He has somehow managed to stretch being a teenage nerd/prankster into a career in comedy and now politics.

The Franken Decade…Give ‘em Hell Al!

  15. TBD | June 18th, 2009 at 02:45 pm

They can’t stop the inevitable. . .the 60th vote against obstruction

  16. Zelduh | June 18th, 2009 at 03:16 pm

I am beginning to suspect that the MN Supreme Court is on the GOP’s payroll, as is Coleman (and his attorneys.)

What a travesty for Minnesota. What a travesty for our country that the GOP can have a stranglehold on us.

  17. Packeryman | June 19th, 2009 at 09:32 am

There is one way the citizens of MN can prevent a boondoggle of this magnitude from occuring again, in upcoming elections of 2010 / 2012 vote out all Republicans for state and national offices so there will be no dispute that the National GOP can finance. I hope the citizens of MN have understood the reactionary ideaology of the obstructionist party of no.

  18. cutthecrap | June 23rd, 2009 at 09:48 am

Com on , what is this ,,,,, a slobbering love affair with Franken? This guy is barely getting enough fabricated votes in a state he should of won going away.It is a testimony to his incompetence. The reason the Supreme court is taking so long is the Republicans have a valid argument that certain counties rigged the election.

  19. Indy | June 23rd, 2009 at 03:46 pm

And the mn court will of course ultimately rule in Franken’s favor. Surprise! It will ultimately go to the US Supreme court where it will be ruled in Coleman’s favor and the recount will be done to the same standards for every county. Coleman will then win. Remember Florida 2000? Justice will prevail!

  20. Teaparty | June 23rd, 2009 at 03:51 pm

Yes and instead of a out of control congress with a filibuster proof spending spree to force socialism, there will be some checks and balances. In 2010 , they will throw the Democrats out on their keasters and hopfully Nancy ” crazy woman” Pelosi will be tossed from leadership also.

  21. chuck maki | June 23rd, 2009 at 03:54 pm

I expect the MN Supremes to rule for Coleman but if not, Coleman will go to DC where the fix is probably in…we need a Green Party that can begin to chisel away at the strangle hold the Democratic and Republican parties have had on this country.

  22. Teaparty2 | June 23rd, 2009 at 03:55 pm

The party of no? If no means some semblance of control of the democratic spending I say yes. With Barny Frank, the Dems are the party of “doctor No”

  23. Art Bishop | June 24th, 2009 at 11:28 am

It’s June 24th and the Minnesota Supreme Court is still _____________.

  24. Art Bishop | June 24th, 2009 at 11:30 am

    MIA

  25. torgman | June 24th, 2009 at 01:49 pm

So, it take the court one day to hear arguments, but it takes 23 day, and counting, to think about what they heard? What the hell are they doing–taking an hour to disucss and examine each syllable of the hearing transcript?

  26. Chuck | June 26th, 2009 at 03:07 am

    >> I am beginning to suspect that the MN Supreme Court is on the GOP’s payroll, as is Coleman (and his attorneys.)

This comment shows that you do not live in MN, or you know absolutely nothing about the Supreme Court of MN, or BOTH — or you’re just a plain idiot looking for something to say.

MOST of the Supreme Court of MN is DFL. (D*** FOOL LAMEBRAINS),

You wanna vote all GOP out, huh? You LIKE being taxed to death? OOOH, I think they can arrange that.

I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. I’m not going to be here much longer, anyway.

BTW: Yes, I DO live in MN. And YOU live in never-never land.

  27. Robert | June 29th, 2009 at 01:39 pm

Teaparty: filibuster proof spending spree to force socialism.
