Flashback: Pawlenty Said He’d Certify Supremes’ Decision “Promptly”

In light of today’s news out of Minnesota, it’s worth recalling that on Sunday, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty said he would certify the election as soon as the supreme court gives the go ahead, vowing to do so “promptly.”

Asked by CNN whether he’d certify the election based on the supreme court ruling, Pawlenty vowed to “follow the direction of the court.” He added: “I also expect them to give guidance and direction as to the certificate of election. I’m prepared to sign it as soon as they give the green light.”

Pawlenty added that if Coleman takes this further, a Federal court could put a stop on the effect of the state court, but clarified that this could only happen “promptly”:

If they chose, if they do that, I would certainly follow their direction. But if that doesn’t happen promptly or drags out for any period of time, then we need to move ahead with signing this, particularly if I’m ordered to do that by the state court.

Today’s decision out of Minnesota decreed that Al Franken is “entitled” under Minnesota law “to receive the certificate of election as United States Senator from the State of Minnesota.”

Pawlenty said he’d act “promptly.” It’s his move now.

He left himself an out by stating if a Federal court ordered him otherwise, he would follow their direction. Here’s a youtube clip of the CNN interaction and his statement regarding a Federal Court order. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th9jNcL5WA8

“Al Franken is “entitled” under Minnesota law “to receive the certificate of election as United States Senator from the State of Minnesota.””

I believe the next most likely development will be Pawlenty choosing to wait because no order was issued.

I sense a great disturbance in the Dark Side, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
