The Real Story Behind The Sarah Palin Dustup: Her Staff Sucks
There’s actually a real and somewhat important story behind the whole brouhaha yesterday over whether Sarah Palin would or wouldn’t attend the big GOP fundraising gala: Republicans say that her staff is basically a disaster.
That matters, of course, because Palin almost was a heartbeat away from the presidency last year, and she harbors ambitions to be less than a heartbeat away from it come 2012. If you want to be the most powerful person in the world, your ability to pick and manage a good staff matters a bit.
Yet reporters and Washington Republicans routinely joke about the quality of her staff, lamenting calls that go unreturned for days, mixed signals, and spasms of general incompetence. This, as much as anything else, is the untold story behind the saga over whether Palin would attend the fundraiser, which dragged on for longer than Days of Our Lives.
Case in point: Her camp’s leak to Politico of the fact that she felt “snubbed” when she learned she wouldn’t be speaking. This leak didn’t accomplish anything except make everybody look bad — herself included. Nor did her staff clarify whether she’d be coming in the wake of the “snub.” That sent Republicans scrambling to figure out what her plans were and enabled Dems to spend the day mocking her as a diva, distracting from the fundraiser’s success.
Anyway, the point is that yesterday’s Palin brouhaha was more than a diverting bit of low comedy. There’s a real story behind it that’s worth keeping in mind as the Palin road show hurtles towards 2012.

Would this be the same staff that put “Sarkozy” through to her last fall?
Republicans have spent too long exalting attitude over aptitude. Sarah Palin and her staff are an excellent case in point.
DanP — yep, I’d forgotten that. Perfect example. and gm like the “attitude over aptitude” formulation. exactly right, I’d say.
But doesn’t it seem probably that if she did have a competent staff, someone else would have chosen and assembled them?
Does the Governor spend much time in Alaska? Is she there when the State Houses are in session?
One of the titles of the year Greg. Hilarious.
Probably also the same staff who plagiarized Newtie to write her speech. She wouldn’t have a clue, but they should have.
This is what happens when you let your high school dropout husband call the shots.
Looks like you’re on the Palin beat, Greg. Did you draw the short straw this week?
Is this the same Sarah Palin that has a reputation for giving unqualified high school friends and church buddies high ranking posts in the Alaskan State Government?
Color me surprised.
This fish stinks from the head down. She sucks every bit as much — if not more than — as her grossly incompetent staff. The Wasilla Hillbillies are a cruel joke on the American people, with Cruella Wasilla herself being the biggest, most painful joke of all.
