Michael Steele Under Pressure To Call Dems “Socialists” — Will He Buckle?

It isn’t easy being Michael Steele these days.

A number of conservative members of the Republican National Committee are pressing the committee — and by extension, Steele — to officially adopt the position that the Democratic Party is socialist.

Over a dozen members of the conservative wing of the RNC have submitted a new resolution, to be eventually voted on by the entire RNC, that would call on the Democratic party to rename itself the “Democrat Socialist Party.” If the RNC adopts this resolution, the RNC’s official view would become that Democrats are socialists. From the resolution:

RESOLVED, that we the members of the Republican National Committee call on the Democratic Party to be truthful and honest with the American people by acknowledging that they have evolved from a party of tax and spend to a party of tax and nationalize and, therefore, should agree to rename themselves the Democrat Socialist Party.

I just reached RNC vice chairman James Bopp, a leading supporter of the resolution, and he confirmed that adopting it would mean the RNC officially designates Dems socialists. “We would be describing the Democrat Party this way if we adopt this resolution,” Bopp said.

This is politically dicey for Steele. In the past he’s refrained from calling Dems and Obama socialists, instead preferring the term “collectivists.”

But in a bit of a potential bombshell, Bobb claimed to me that Steele has privately told him “on several occasions that he agrees with the substance” of the resolution designating Dems socialists.

I hope Republican leadership continues to focus on issues like this that are of such pressing concern to the American people. It’s a sure path back to power!

Yeah, I just saw this item. Perhaps the DNC might respond with a motion to officially designate their modern opponents as “without a brain-stem”.
But in any case, there’s really only one cable personality who deserves to carry the announcement when the RNC implements this strategic master-stroke… http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=225115&title=moment-of-zen-ignoramus

Hoo boy!  The RepubliFringe Party is having a real struggle deciding whether to paint Dems as socialists or as fascists (the polar opposite of socialist).
    .
Of course, it’s likely that most GOOPer pinheads don’t know the difference and don’t want to know.

Holeee Cr*p! Srsly? They go someplace new and exciting every day now, don’t they? I didn’t think they could top Rick Perry’s wanting to secede, but by gum, I think this tops that. Have they done ANYTHING policy related since the election. Buehler?

The DSUSA might have a complaint about that.

Greg, I have a question. Were the Democrats this childish when the Republicans were in power? It’s been a while and time whitewashes memories, but I don’t ever remember seeing this kind of behavior from dems.

    Sevugan:

“Instead of focusing on how we can fix the financial system and bring the country out of this recession as well as defeating terrorism world wide, the RNC is focused on passing 3rd grader name calling resolutions. The DNC is the party of grownups”
    .
I can see it now lol.

I much prefer the party of socialists to the party of torture.

Is Obama getting a torture memo release bump? Or maybe it’s a Hugo Chavez handshake bump.

@sgwhite: Sevugan does it again! I’m glad he’s on the dem side.

Geez, if growing government larger than any president since FDR, instituting 8 tax payer funded bailouts to private industry and spreading over $1 trillion of tax payer’s money to a foreign country isn’t socialism then I’m not sure what is. Of course when the Republicans do it it’s not socialism, it’s patriotism.

Hey that Redshit guy is back. That’s awesome!

  13. RedMolly23 | April 23rd, 2009 at 04:46 pm

I’m fine with the proposed renaming of the Democratic party, as long as the Repubs agree to rename themselves to the Morally Bankrupt Party of Permanent Irrelevance.

No. They may have done some dumb things, but having members of the national party vote to demand that the other party change their names to “Poopy Heads”? Not a chance.

Should this pass, in the interest in balance and accuracy, the same bill should require that the Senate roster be changed and the name of each supporter of this measure be listed as “Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-WI”

  16. Justin | April 24th, 2009 at 04:14 pm

Absolutely ridiculous. Good job RNC, this is clearly what you need to be focusing on. This is just one more step down the stairs of your descent into irrelevance.

As a sociaist I’m offended. Obama may be totally rad, but he is still a dirty capitalist.

Umm…both the Republican and Democrats as far as I am concerned are Socialist Parties….I’ve been around long enough to see the continued erosion of our Constitution. It is time to start a “Constitutional Party” that will repeal the Income Tax Amendment and uphold the 10th amendment per State rights. We are in Tyranny! If nothing is done soon, our only option is to avoid paying taxes some how, ignore the Feds, the State Gov, and the Supreme Court. Our founding fathers told us we should rebel when our Government is no longer for “We the People”. It is time now! Hell, our local government is trying to tell people how long they can “tether” a pet. A pet is private property. Ore we going to start a “free Fence” Government Agency so that “poor” people will be able to abide by the “tethered” dog rule…..Give me a break!

Send the illegal aliens home, secure our Borders, and guit being a busy body!

    C.S.Lewis says it best…

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Oh, why don’t they just round this off with a symmetrical ‘Republican Fascist Party’

  20. elaygee | May 13th, 2009 at 01:46 pm

I vote to change the name of the Republicans to Creepublicans.

  21. Hugh | May 14th, 2009 at 08:52 pm

I find it ironic that the very Repukelicans who 7 years ago claimed that we must sacrifice citizens’ liberties to fight those who would destroy this country , are the same Repukelicans pressing for state secession in order to destroy this country. (?sunshine patriots? or pathetic treasonous b@st@rds?).

These dudheads have reached a new low..even for them. Because they have no ideas and the ones that they do have suck the big one, “ok, ok..let’s give ‘em a new name..that’ll teach ‘um to mess wif us!” lol It is so amusing watching them implode…on not only a daily basis..but, now hourly as well! And, it so cracks me up every day when they decide to “say” something to us after coming from their little meetings..they gather on the steps, try to look so serious when we know that they are playing games on their pda’s..look at each other like (you go first)..and say abso-f^ckinglutly nothing! Grow up you guys and join the rest of us out here trying to fix the mess(es) we’re in as a country.
