Huckabee: “Attractive” Sarah Palin Snubbed Me
A fun nugget from Ben Smith’s interview with Mike Huckabee hints at some serious resentment smoldering between him and Sarah Palin, the two leading conservative standard bearers heading into the 2012 GOP primary:
“Some of the people who had excoriated me and really been very dismissive of me for views that I had taken, and labeled me anything from a populist to an ignoramus — the same people have been very defensive [of] and laudatory to Sarah Palin,” Huckabee noted, adding that he’d invited her to appear on his weekly Fox show but “could never get any contact.”
“I’m glad she’s getting the props — I know I’m not nearly as attractive,” he said with a guileless grin.
Huckabee seems to be smarting over Palin’s refusal to answer his invitation to appear on his show, and while that could reflect her displeasure with someone daring to cut in on her base, it’s more likely a reflection of Palin’s staff being a disaster.
Huckabee, meanwhile, is pretty open about his disdain for, and resentment of, Palin’s successful appeal to conservatives, which he dismisses as superficial and rooted in her looks.
Huckabee and Palin may be natural competitors for the GOP base. A recent Gallup poll found that while Palin is hugely popular among Republicans with a 72% approval rating, Huckabee is the runner-up among 2012 hopefuls, with a 59% approval among the same voters.

They’re a cute couple.
“, it’s more likely a reflection of Palin’s staff being a disaster.” Or just that same pattern – she’s turned down more invitations than she has agreed to and she’s stood up some engagements she agreed to.
Sarah doesn’t give a fig for responsibility – I mean = d’oh! She quit as governor. She’s a quitter. She just doesn’t feel obligated to her obligations whatsoever.
She was right not to appear on his show. He would have complete control of the debate/discussion.
Come in to my parlor, said the spider to the fly.
Huckabee assumes she’s a normal poltician. She’s not, she’s a grifter. Ever try to get a grifter to agree to do something for free?
“Huckabee assumes she’s a normal poltician. She’s not, she’s a grifter. Ever try to get a grifter to agree to do something for free?”
Nail; hammer; you hit it square on the head.
Actually, Quitter Palin is in the modern show business sector: Fee For Appearance Celebrities. Talent or skill has nothing to do with it. They get paid large fees, just for being famous for being famous.
Quitter Palin is just a Paris Hilton for Right Wing Christians.
” just for being famous for being famous.
Quitter Palin is just a Paris Hilton for Right Wing Christians.”
And that entire thing has turned into a kind of grift – so I agree with you, too. You get a lot of stuff when you’re famous. People give you things, including money. This is something she does know how to do.
At this point, the real story is NOT regarding these nutcases specifically, but really the main story out of the GOP Civil War is:
HOW FAR DOES A STORY HAVE TO GO ON THE GROUND BEFORE IT CHANGES MSM CW?
Point being, if this was a battle between two Dems, it would be front page national news. The Neo-confederate Civil War has been RAGING now for quite some time. Yet the MSM reportage on the GOP of late is almost entirely about the “miraculous GOP resurgence” based on two elections that had almost zero national bearing. THIS is the real story in the GOP. It remains to be seen how far this story goes before it gets widely reported as a major story and not just background noise.
Quitter Palin is just a Paris Hilton for Right Wing Christians.
I am borrowing that assessment for future use!
HOW FAR DOES A STORY HAVE TO GO ON THE GROUND BEFORE IT CHANGES MSM CW?
Quite a very long, long way! I like to think of the MSM as an oceagoing ship with a turning radius measured in decades.
Ethan, also you have mainstream media people openly claiming that Dem division is worse than GOP division. I agree that in some ways Dem division is more relevant, but it’s clearly not worse than the state of the GOP now…
Shannyn Moore has a lot to say about Sarah’s facebook response to Saturday’s historic vote. Of course there is no love lost there, but worth the read. First is the title of Sarah’s response and then a little explaination from Shannyn.
“The Pelosi Bill Was Rammed Through on Saturday, But Sunday’s Coming.”
“Seems harmless to a casual reader, but to the evangelicals? Instant salivation. During sermons about the crucifixion, a typical preacher line goes, “Friday was a dark, dark day, but Sunday’s coming.” Answered with many “Amens.” So, Nancy Pelosi just killed Jesus, and Sarah is going to resurrect him?”

Greg, even with the division among Dems they still managed to pass the bill. GOP couldn’t even win an election in a Republican district.
“HOW FAR DOES A STORY HAVE TO GO ON THE GROUND BEFORE IT CHANGES MSM CW?”
Isn’t MSM CW an editorial decision?
There’s your answer. It depends on who the media outlet is beholden to.
As I & others have observed before here, Dem. division is status quo. It’s what comes with truly having a big tent.
I think “journalists” who don’t grasp that aren’t worth the name.
“GOP couldn’t even win an election in a Republican district.”
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!
I don’t know about the rest of you…but I can’t wait until Palin does Oprah. Winfrey originally came from a background of broadcast journalism and I don’t think she’s going into the tank for Sarah. In fact I think Winfrey has the weight of the entire national electorate on her as she will be the ONLY person to really get a shot at her since Katie C….I hope Oprah and her producers are preparing as we speak.
Meanwhile Palin continues to duck any OBJECTIVE questioning from the press or even the average citizen..
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/11/06/palin-to-keep-low-profile-on-wisconsin-trip/
But Palin appears to be doing her best to keep a low profile on this trip: no press will be allowed into the Milwaukee auditorium where she will speak and those who have paid the $30 admittance fee are unable to carry in cell phones, cameras, laptops, or recording devices of any kind.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told the Wisconsin Radio Network he finds all these restrictions “bizarre.”
It wasn’t until the Reagan administration that the MSM CW on conservatives finally shifted from what it had reflexively been since at least the Eisenhower administration, namely that all conservatives were necessarily John Birch whackos (despite the demonstratable evidence of conservative leaders like Buckley & Goldwater who didn’t have the time of day for the paranoid set that now defines the GOP base).
I don’t think she’s going into the tank for Sarah
I fully expect her to go in the tank for a prominent celebrity pushing a book. It would be bad for business if Oprah didn’t go in the tank for Sarah.
I’ll also be delighted to be wrong, btw.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told the Wisconsin Radio Network he finds all these restrictions “bizarre.”
If you assess Palin as a politician trying to lead a political faction it is indeed bizarre, but it makes perfect sense if she’s a celebrity riding a gravy train.
@Rukidding,
Don’t get your hopes up on Oprah landing a glove on her. She has a history of doing vapid cream puff interviews.
She made George W. Bush look good.
Sorry OT, McCaskill discussing the Stupak (sepsis) ammendment. Looks like Dems will probably cave on this to get the votes, Pelosi got stuck with it and now the Senate will to. I’m trying to accept it because I want HCR to pass but it’s still a bitter pill.
“And so, I am not sure that this is going to be enough to kill the bill,” McCaskill added. “And frankly, once again, this is another example of having to govern with moderates. We can’t just turn our back on the fact that the reason we are in majority, is because states like Indiana, and Arkansas, and Louisiana, and Missouri, and North Carolina, and Virginia sent Democrats to the Senate.”

The Stupak amendment will also kill private insurance funding for abortions if its passed as law.
Liam, you’re right, I don’t think Sarah would have agreed otherwise. She’s also supposedly doing Walters and the Fox crowd. I’m not expecting anything too revealing. If she won’t even do Huckabee she’s playing it really safe.
You know, regarding that health care vote and I’m surprised Greg didn’t make note of it.
The Cao vote overshadowed everything but there were two other important votes and had all three swung the other way, we would be singing a very different toon today.
The other two votes were Owens NY-22 and Garamendi CA-10.
@Insimca,
I had already concluded that the Senate was not going to reverse the house abortion amendment, in the reform bill.
The only chance for to get it removed will be through the courts. I expect that the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, etc will challenge it. You can not pass a law that forbids people to have access to a legal medical procedure, when their are no government funds involved.
I still marvel at the fact that so many elected officials claim that they want abortions outlawed because they believe that it is murder,
and then vote for bills that allow abortions(Which they claim is murder) under certain conditions; such as rape or incest. According to those sanctimonious hypocrites; it is all right to then commit murder(their name for abortion.)
They want to have it both ways. It is murder when it suits them, and it is not when it suits them. Just a bunch of sanctimonious hypocrites.
Woah! Greg, cmon now. You’re extrapolating a lot out of this single quote. The Huckster is a big joker, and whether he is serious or not is something that can show itself in time, but how about we come up with an even better answer than Huckabee disliking Palin solely for her looks.
Huckabee has NEVER been an establishment candidate, the corporate/leadership elites in the party were pushing Huckabee out from the very beginning of 2008. He stayed in and was effectively a spoiler that allowed McCain to win the primary even though he lacked the backing of the top fundraisers (formerly supporters of Bush). Huckabee had no money, and was keen to appeal to the social conservative base at the expense of spend/charge elite Republicans.
Now, in walks Palin and, with the backing of a party elite fearful that they were losing their base, she gets shoved into the lime light. Success! They’ve cemented their base, at the expense of becoming enthralled by it. However, this leaves Huckabee on the outs. He can no longer play the role of the insurgent thanks to Palin AND the elites. Palin doesn’t care about holding office, Huckabee does, and boy does he hate her for jumping in front of him in the line (heck, she may have broken the line altogether).
This old agnostic thanks God, every night for the gift of Sarah Palin.
Huckabee is the one right wing candidate that I have feared the most, so the more that Palin blocks him, the more I like it.
Huckabee has serious preaching skills. He is a modern day Elmer Gantry. I am very grateful for having Palin stealing his pulpit.
Once again, this old agnostic wishes to say; thank you Jeepers. Keep up the bad work.
“Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told the Wisconsin Radio Network he finds all these restrictions “bizarre.””
I bet he didn’t find them the slightest bit “bizarre” when the Bush Administration insisted on all kinds of restrictions whenever Bush showed up.
I agree with him – it’s bizarre. But we wouldn’t be here if the GOP hadn’t blindly supported all of Commander CooCoo’s bizarre behavior.
Nevermind, he’s the Democratic Chair. I misread that the first time.
I happened to get my hands on Mike Huckabee’s actual invitation to Quitter Palin.

Looks like Tea Party Central, Ohio, land of John Boehner, just isn’t that into Tea Bags. They shed the school board of the fools.

Funny you should mention that Liam, he was a candidate I LIKED during 2008. I thought he wouldn’t do half a bad job compared to Mitt “how high?” Romney and War Monger McCain (although I allowed myself to be convinced by the media that he would play a “moderate maverick” role). It is now pretty clear that though he was quick on his feet and probably a competent leader, he is not ready to release the pulpit while he governs. So yes, Palin brought all this craziness in the GOP to a head and probably will end up doing those of us wanting to get back to governing a favor.
“The only chance for to get it removed will be through the courts. ”
The politicians have danced a mincing Minuet on the Constitutionality of limiting access to choice ever since Roe.
A right does or does not exist in toto and the right to end a pregnancy through abortion is a constitutionally guaranteed right which arises from women’s right to privacy in their bodies, just like men.
I think all the anti-choice legislation is unconstitutional. But we aren’t going there any time soon.
I hope very much that the Roberts court DOES NOT get to make this decision.
mike – I agree. How quickly thw left forgets its heroes !
huckster is more dangerous of the two since he hides a devious heart behind the face of charming clown. However, I hope he and mittens continue to undermine that twit from tundras.
Tena, I am so glad they passed the legislation through the House Sat. and Pelosi did a fantastic job but I will not stop, and I know you won’t either, reminding everyone about the Stupid Stupak Sepsis Ammendment.
At the American Prospect and Feministing, Ann Friedman reminds us that the significance of the Stupak amendment goes way beyond the funding of abortion services for people who happen to buy coverage through the new insurance exchanges:
“On some level, I don’t care about the nitty-gritty details of this amendment. This isn’t just about how the money is allocated or what workarounds exist. This has me so incredibly infuriated because it further segregates abortion as something different, off the menu of regular health care. It is a huge backward step in the battle to convey — not just politically, but to women in their everyday lives — that reproductive health care is normal and necessary, and must be there if (or, more accurately, when) you need it.
This also sets apart women’s rights from the Democratic/progressive/whatever agenda. As something expendable. But fundamental rights for women are not peripheral. They are core. And not just because of so-called “progressive” values. In a political sense, too: Seeing as how the Democratic party relies on women voters to win elections, you would think they would have come around to this no-brainer by now.
It’s pretty cramped underneath this bus, what with 50 percent of Americans down here.”
““On some level, I don’t care about the nitty-gritty details of this amendment. This isn’t just about how the money is allocated or what workarounds exist. This has me so incredibly infuriated because it further segregates abortion as something different, off the menu of regular health care.”
Ooo she really nailed that one. That’s what makes me mad. It’s a medical procedure. The motive is nobody’s business. It’s between a woman and her doctor and her conscience and there isn’t one procedure a man gets that all of society gets to weigh in on.
And that says it all. This is about controlling women’s sexuality.
I disagree with Huckabee on almost everything, but I don’t think he is stupid. He sees Palin as a potential rival and is being smart by keeping her in check. I don’t see Palin as ever running for anything as a GOP. She is burning all those bridges as we speak. She want to take her moron posse and make a third party to challenge the GOP for the extremist right wing.
Huckabee will do his best to dismember Palin – all while sporting a “guileless grin” – and politically neutralize her whether she is in or out of the GOP.
Another palin CT on in god we trust.

“She want to take her moron posse and make a third party to challenge the GOP for the extremist right wing.”
Well as far as that goes, Huckabee can give her free rein – she’s not going anywhere with that. Of course that does threaten his voter base, cause he has a lot of the Batshit vote, too. So you’re right, as far as it goes and it just goes between the two of them and no further, really.
That Batshit Vote is not enough to win elections. Half of them are too batshit to vote in the first place.
It’s *wonderful* to see the Seven Teabagging Mental Dwarves begin to dismember, destroy and otherwise character-assassinate each other. It warmes my heart like nothing else can. A virulent, incurable pox be upon each of their twisted, lying, fear-mongering, amoral, despicable politcal houses.
Or ss the late, great Tito Puente, Sr. would say, “divide and conga”!
Liam, I totally agree with your assessment of the Huckster. His avuncular approach makes him appear open-minded, a man of faith balanced by reason, hardly a theocratic threat. But he is at heart a cruel, petty man fueled by greed and revenge, who cynically employs religion to achieve his own goals. I consider him the GOP candidate mostly likely to succeed at installing Biblical law over this country. For more insights see this must-read Huckabee profile written by the editor of the Arkansas Times:

Looks like OSarah bin Palin’ around with terrorists.
@fanta
Thanks for the link. I hadn’t read that before. Most enlightening!
(Doesn’t Huckabee’s resume include an early stint in the press office of one of the major televangelists, or some such?)
@oddjob, thanks for asking – I wasn’t aware of this aspect of Huckabee’s past so I checked that bastion of internet reliability, Wikipedia, and here’s what Huckabee’s entry says under the heading of Pastoral Career:
At 21, Huckabee was a staffer for James Robison, a television evangelist. Robison commented, “His convictions shape his character and his character will shape his policies. His whole life has been shaped by moral absolutes.” Huckabee has stated, “Politics are totally directed by worldview. That’s why when people say, ‘We ought to separate politics from religion,’ I say to separate the two is absolutely impossible”. Huckabee believes in Biblical inerrancy. Prior to his political career, Huckabee served as pastor at Beech Street Baptist Church in Texarkana from 1980–1986 and then at Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas from 1986–1992. In both Texarkana and Pine Bluff Huckabee started 24-hour television stations “where he produced documentaries and hosted a program called Positive Alternatives. He encouraged the all-white Immanuel Baptist Church to accept black members in the mid 1980s. He served as president of a religion-oriented television station. In 1989 Huckabee ran against the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Floyd of Springdale for the presidency of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. Huckabee won and served as president from 1989 to 1991.
As TV preachers go, Robison is hardly one of the worst. He doesn’t try to empty people’s pockets with Prosperity Gospel, and he doesn’t try to scare them into submission with Rapture malarkey.
However, Robison is a Dominionist, and that makes him even more dangerous than the usual fraudsters. How much did he influence Huckabee? Religious Right Watch offers these clues:
http://www.religiousrightwatch.com/2008/01/exposing-huckab.html
Robison also helped a drunken ne’er-do-well rebrand himself as a compassionate Christian and bring us eight years of hell on earth with GW Bush.
Thanks, fanta. I must have been confusing Robison with a bigger name (not that being the staffer of a Dominionist and then going on to a career in politics gives no cause to worry).
Never mind the Civil War between the Corporatists and the Theocrats. The infighting within the ranks of the Theocrats is worth the price of admission in and of itself.
@oddjob – James Robison, Pat Robertson…James Robison, James Dobson…these creeps are easy to confuse. And there are so many of them!
The creepiest ones are on Trinity Broadcasting Network – the worst of the Prosperity bunch, real con men fleecing the flock. They’re having their biannual Praise-A-Thon right now; if TBN airs in your area, tune in to feel your flesh crawl.
Oh, you mean the infernal offspring of Kenneth Hagin – folks like Kenneth Copeland & Benny Hinn?
They’ll never admit it, probably not even to themselves, but in their version of the Good News God is little more than an ATM machine.
Sure not like the guy who sat in a church pew listening to his preacher, yelling out ‘G’Damm America” castigating us for Hiroshima, using Soweto as a topic for a Christmas sermon, wonder whatever became of him.
Gosh, could “ian cormac” be talking about Republican McCain’s “Spiritual Guide”, Rod Parsley who screamed: “We were built for battle! We were created for conflict! We get off on warfare!”
Or perhaps he’s talking about Republican McCain’s preacher buddy John Hagee who claimed that God sent Hitler to kill Jews and even said that Jews “are physically alive but they’re not spiritually alive.”
Or perhaps he’s talking about Republican Palin’s witch hunting preacher?
