Steele: GOP Needs To Stop “Slammin’ And Rammin’” On Sotomayor
RNC chair Michael Steele, guest-hosting on Bill Bennett’s radio show early this morning, repeatedly distanced himself from Republicans and conservatives who have been harshly attacking Sonia Sotomayor, saying the assault risked damaging the party.
Steele also appeared to suggest that such attacks were a non-starter because the liberal media, and MSNBC in particular, would use them to damage the GOP.
In what seemed like an effort to distance the party from claims that Sotomayor is “racist” and an “Affirmative Action” pick, Steele repeatedly said that Republicans should be hailing the historic nature of Obama’s pick.
“I’m excited that a Hispanic woman is in this position,” Steele said. He added that instead of “slammin’ and rammin’” on Sotomayor, Republicans should “acknowledge” the “historic aspect” of the pick and make a “cogent, articulate argument” against her for purely substantive reasons.
Steele warned that because of the attacks, “we get painted as a party that’s against the first Hispanic woman” picked for the Supreme Court.
“We don’t need to play this the way the Democrats have played it in the past,” Steele said, adding that Republicans can’t do this because they don’t have the “liberal media” on their side, the way Dems did. Said Steele: “MSNBC will rip everything we have to say up into shreds.”
Steele didn’t mention Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich, the two leading proponents of the racially-loaded attacks on Sotomayor. It’s a reminder of Steele’s predicament: He knows how badly these attacks are damaging the party and how neatly they play into the hands of Dems, but he can’t call out the leading figures launching those attacks, because that risks infuriating the base and feeding the meme that the GOP is hopelessly divided.

Something tells me that Steele has been reading the polls and it does not look good. First Cornyn, now Steele. Who else will come out against the attacks that threaten to further pull down GOP numbers?
It’s a good thing Fox News isn’t running segments every 3 seconds with Newt Gingrich, Fred Barnes or Hannity or some other Super Tough Patriot yelling and screaming that Sotomayor is a racist, an affirmative action pick or dumb. Did anyone read Gerson’s column this morning? As his fundamental function writing at the Post is propagandist, he tosses in (as always) a few dumb talking points/cliches (Obama as Chicago thug). But he’s clearly fretting re the future electoral possibilities of the party because the red-meat ravenous base (which he helped and continues to help foster) is madly marching everyone towards the cliff. I am without empathy on this matter.
Funny that Steele Blames the “librul media” and MSNBC instead of the actual racists and sexists in his party making racist and sexist comments. Curse that d@mned media for showing clips of stuff they actually said!

One more thing, how transparent is Steele’s dumb @ss when he doesn’t even allow for the fact that anybody in the party might NOT oppose Sotomayor. Its a forgone conclusion in his mind that they will oppose her, they just have to find the right argument to use against her. I mean who wants a real examination of her record and qualifications on its merits, right?
Are elected Republican officials playing good cop here? Is there any way this is a coordinated strategy; the right wing media types fire up the base to increase fund raising while the elected officials play good guy and improve their standing while benefiting from the cash flowing into RNC coffers?

I thought about the goog cop/bad cop scenario, but I think those in the Latino community would see right through it. Limbaugh and the gang have gone too far for any type of redemption by elected officials pretending to care.
Steele should resign. The surest way to end the GOP is for conservatives to take a back seat and let it be run into the ground by vacillating fence sitters. Stick to your guns (before they are taken away).
mike – I had a similarly cynical response the other day when Greg posted a comment from Steele (in that case, because the statement matched a talking point from a list inadvertently released to the press). But I think Greg read Steele better than I had. The comments above look more likely to be plaintive rather than purposefully false. Steele is not an adept at some of the functions his post entails but I think I have good reasons to imagine him as a rather better sort of person than most of the others whom we are discussing.
Limbaugh & Gingrich are proponents of “racially loaded attacks?” Since when? Limbaugh & Gingrich are trying to SEPARATE race from the issue! They are concentrating on the TRUTH regarding Sotomayor’s history of anti-Constitution, anti-judicial restraint rhetoric and decisions. Sotomayor has had five decisions overturned by SCOTUS, and 1 decision severely criticized. That, my friends, is the truth, and has nothing to do with ethnicity, and everything to do with her level of competence (or lack thereof) to serve on the highest court of the land.

Sotomayor has had 3, count em 3 decisions overturned by the SCOTUS out of 6 that made it before them and almost 400 overall. Her percentage is far lower than the average and she hasn’t had any of them “severely criticized”. So before you come spouting off about Limbaugh wanting the truth, you might brush up on what the truth is, because it is decidely NOT what Rush is saying.

Yes, Leo, listen to the debate. She’s had all of 5 of her decisions appealed to the Supremes. Of those 3, not 5, were overturned. That’s a 60% overturn rate, which places her below the 75-80% average rate of overturnings, and well below the 100% rate of reversal enjoyed by Justice Alito.
Also, you should probably check her record before you jump on her reversals. One was a decision saying Merill Lynch couldn’t be sued under a federal law, only a state law, and another stated the EPA couldn’t conduct a cost-benefit analysis for a rule it had already issued. The third was allowing an inmate to sue the private corporation that ran a halfway house for injuries he sustained there.
That’s it. That’s what you’re working yourself into a tizzy over on her reversals, Leo. Be careful now, you wouldn’t want to get those facts straight…

Thanks for showing the Biden quote in context. The context changes everything. His next statement was, “I don’t believe he could have won had he been white.” In other words, he wasn’t making a statement about Thomas’s experience or ability. He was making a statement about his own party’s unwillingness to vote against a black nominee despite a level of controversy that would have sunk a white candidate, and about Bush Sr.’s cynically taking advantage of that.
Well Bill McD, those pesky facts are coming back to haunt you. Alito only had 2 cases sent to the SCOTUS after serving longer as an appeals judge than Sotomayor.

She was chosen as a Supreme Court nominee and her judicial record should be held up high for all to see. I thought Steele said last week that the Republican party was going to after the fascist socialist administration. The fast way to bring about the real change that our President envision, a socialist utopia, is appoint judges who think the constitution is outdated document that limits the power of government. ( That was the point of the Constitution bye the way). I believe the opposition party should scrutinize espcially a Supreme court Justice. It seems that Mr. Steele is more interested in attacking Republicans than Democrats. Whether you a Sotomayor fan or not, it is perfectly appropriate to examine her past statements and decisions in deciding whether or not she would make an appropriate Supreme Court Justice. Besides, there is no real question about her getting in anyway. The Republicans could not mount a fillibuster if they wanted to. Finally, it is actually sad that these appointments have to be examined, promoted or condemned based upon racial or sexual factors. These are primitive and tribal methods of evaluating candidates, and thus have little bearing on performance.

I left the GOP in January and have often questioned if I made the correct choice. Undoubtledly I have made the correct choice and shall never question it again.
