Republican National Committee Quietly Scraps Plans For Big “Renewal” Think Tank
The Republican National Committee, under new chairman Michael Steele, has quietly killed an ambitious plan to create the Center for Republican Renewal, a big in-house RNC think tank intended to develop new policies and ideas in order to take the party in a new direction, a Republican official who was directly informed of the decision by RNC staff tells me.
The Center’s goal was to help the GOP reclaim the mantle of the “party of ideas,” as RNC officials glowingly announced in December, and the decision to scrap it has some Republicans, including allies of former RNC chair Mike Duncan, its creator, wondering how precisely the RNC intends to generate the new ideas necessary to change course and renew itself.
The decision to kill the Center leaves the RNC with “no policy office,” at least for the foreseeable future, according to the GOP official with direct knowledge of the decision. I tried to ask the RNC to respond to this claim, but the RNC press office didn’t answer repeated requests for comment.
The Center’s original purpose was founded on the premise that the GOP had grown bereft of real ideas, was failing to “provide solutions to the kitchen table concerns” of Americans, and had grown addicted to “falling back on ideology alone,” according to an RNC memo last December announcing the Center’s creation. It included creating a big “board of advisers” stocked with major GOP current and former officials and party leaders who would develop ideas on how to change this.
The question now is what mechanism, if any, the RNC hopes to create to fulfill this task.
Separately, in more signs of tumult at the organization, Ben Smith reports that multiple staffers have been let go.

Should we be drawing a distinction between conservatives and Republicans? Conservatives have no shortage of think tanks, and they all seem to be devoted to coming up with ideas that most benefit the wealthy, while making them marketable to the uneducated. If Heritage Foundation concentrates on legal issues, AEI on economic, etc., what gap would a new think tank fill? New ideas is a pretty shallow foundation.
Greg wasn’t Steele the one that thought there was nothing wrong with the idea just how the message was packaged or sold? I think one of the consequences of what this crew just perceived as a triupmh (no votes in the House for the Stim Bill) and how big the mageaphone was on their viewpoints on tv is that they think 1. This is Clinton redux and they will gain big in 2010 just by being obstructionists no need for any positive message and 2. there is no need to embrace whatever impulse there was to find alternative policies and reform the party.
A non related very ignorant question–can someone please explain to me why or where it comes from that the conservatives are called The Village or Villagers?
lfo, my understanding of the term “The Village” is that it isn’t a reference to conservatives, but to an insular Beltway elite comprised of columnists pundits, elected officials, consultants, etc, who worship the idea of bipartisanship for its own sake, thus frustrating those who believe that Democrats are the party that is more representative of the “center.” that’s the way the coinage has been used in various quarters, anyway. the “Village” is the Beltway…I’m still not clear on who came up with the term.

I’d suggest that the decision to (quietly) kill this initiative was made for a singular political/marketing motive – appear to be on offense always! It is, I think, a mistake to consider that Bush’s infamous inability to admit errors arose out of deficiencies in his own personality. If that were the case, we’d see some different behaviors from others in his administration and we did not. This looks pretty evidently to be a fundamental marketing axiom which the right is going to continue to run with regardless of whatever situation it and the nation finds itself in.
That they have/had anything wrong or that they might be “bereft of ideas” as the earlier statement from Duncan put it implicitly places them in the defensive.
I think, but I’m not sure, that Atrios came up with “the Village.”
I actually thought the Yuval Levin article was very interesting and well-crafted.
I think it’s clear the quest for new ideas has been supplanted by the thrill of combat…again. Republicans, or perhaps just the conservatives who have taken over the party, seem addicted to the adrenalin rush that comes from being obstacles to the Democrats to such an extent that they cannot see the long-term consequences of such short-sightedness…much like any addict who is unable to see those things. And, just like the addict truly losing themselves to their addiction, the Republican Party shows the same bravado and denial of their cirucmstances. We are witnessing organizational suicide.

Let me explain who conservatives are. We are not emotional, but logical. We do not ask for opinions when we make up our minds, just the facts. We pride ourselves on taking the facts and thinking for ourselves. We were the ones in the Universities that were always asking the Professors why did this come about, how was this thought come about, and what are the biases that preceded this theologians line of thought. We are not the ones that swallow the political thought with out chewing and digesting first, and if something is poisonous we have had the insight to spit it out.
Conservatives do not believe in the ends justify the means. We believe that by following a strict set of means (truth, honesty, and integrity) will ultimately lead to the desired ends. Liberals have long idealized leaders that have led the fight in the “ends justify the means”. Ex. are Alinsky, Lenin, Stalin, and Gramsci…… these are simply the ones you can read their political writings and see that the ability to lie and manipulate is an attribute….. those of you who do not know this please go to your library and read…. know who you are following.

The history books I have read tells me the Republican Abraham Lincoln bears no likeness to the Republican George Bush or Dick Cheney, that the ideology that runs the Republican belief systems is ideology not common sense, and that.
You say you chew and digest something- but you all whole heartedly supported George W. Bush and he did nothing but lie, decieve and put this country into a tremendous deficit and an unecessary war.
So if you do not get tingles about Obama because you have clear policy disagreements with him- for that you are entitled- but if it is based on the tingles you get from the Conservative party and your reasoning on why Conservatives are the “level headed” party- I think you need to go back to the Library dear- and expand your reading. George W Bush was more in line with the likes of Castro and Saddam- than Abe Lincoln or even Reagan. Maybe you should read of FDR- and the New Deal and the 2nd New Deal- how building infrastructure- (ya know all that pork in the stimulus bill) created thousands upon thousands of new jobs thrusting our economy back into a forward motion and out of the depression. And how that actually worked up until the Conservatives came along in the 70’s and 80’s and slowly started picking it apart.
The Conservatives you speak of are not the ones I have ever met. The ones I meet are narrow minded, greedy, selfish, every man for himself- give me my tax cuts- screw the less fortunate- sucks to be you Americans that ran this country to shame the last 8 years- if thats what makes you proud no judgement from me. The most memorable time I experienced the “liberals made us do it” argument (”We were put in this position, We did not ask for it… “) it was by a conservative front-pager at SwordsCrossed, name of “Ender” who claimed that liberals were to blame for Ann Coulter on exactly those grounds. When I challenged this, he claimed that it was because the Democrats had moved way to the left culturally in the early 80s. I responded by spending hours researching and writing a detailed refutation, using GSS polling data as a major factual foundation for my argument. Although he promised to respond to me as soon as he had time, somehow he never got around to it. There were just too many other pressing things that he knew just as little about that he had to pontificate on. I eventually quit posting at SwordsCrossed, as this pattern was never broken: liberals posted fact-based arguments while conservatives just bloviated.
So, allow me to offer my considered judgment on your re-iteration of this claim: Not so much.

I think that explains it perfectly. Even though Dems fall in love it is like any relationship; you argue, you question, you expect the best out of your partner, but in order to be in love you have to REALLY believe in that person. FDR’s programs DID put many people to work but did nothing to correct the underlying causes of the depression. Indeed, it can be argued that FDR’s policies actually lengthened economic recovery.
However, I agree with your other points. And Jamie’s logic is, at the very least flawed, if not an outright fantasy.

And what exactly did WWII do that the New Deal didn’t – other than stimulate MUCH larger federal spending and job creation? If the New Deal job programs were larger than they were they would have had a similar effect. Not to mention the fact that war industry related expenditures are one of the more inefficient modes of economic stimulus. The WPA build roads and buildings that stimulated other economic activity… building tanks has no such similar downstream positive effect on the economy. Not to mention the cost to society through death and maiming – and the associated loss of income and medical costs, etc. that war produces…
And as far as correcting what caused the depression – perhaps you are unaware of the legislation enacted in the 1930’s to safeguard investments… to create the FDIC, to limit stock purchases on margin, to regulate the stock market… How exactly did WWII change the legal environment that led to the depression??
