Exclusive: Michael Steele Blasts Birtherism As “Unnecessary Distraction,” Says Obama Is “U.S. Citizen”
For the first time, RNC chair Michael Steele is sharply criticizing the birthers, condemning the movement as an “unnecessary distraction,” reaffirming that the president is a “U.S. citizen,” and stressing that it’s time to move past debating Obama’s “birth certificate.”
In response to my questions about Steele’s views of birtherism, which holds that Obama wasn’t born in the United States and thus isn’t legitimately the president, RNC spokesperson Gail Gitcho sent me the following statement:
“Chairman Steele believes that this is an unnecessary distraction and believes that the president is a U.S. citizen. Chairman Steele wants to move beyond this conversation and continue discussing the real and immediate concerns that face American families like the economy and health care. Americans are concerned with President Obama’s health care plan, a failed stimulus package and a ballooning deficit. Chairman Steele has many other issues to take up with the president that have to do with policy, not a birth certificate.”
Steele hadn’t criticized birtherism before, his spokesperson says. His decision to do so now suggests that he recognizes that the party needs to put the birther controversy behind it at a time when some Republican officials have flirted openly with the cause advocated by this small but growing fringe.
This statement coming from the GOP’s public face and chief operative is probably the most direct condemnation of birtherism yet by a top party official. His willingness to risk the wrath of the bithers, not to mention some of the party’s more strident voices, suggests he’s aware of the damage they’re doing to the GOP, by allowing Dems to paint the party as captive to intolerants and as more interested in discussing crackpot conspiracy theories than in debating real issues.

It wouldn’t surprise me if many of these birthers are the same folks that went around the internet claiming Obama was the anti-Christ during the primaries.

There is a large number of people in the U.S. that are very sick. The problem is these recent revelations have them disproportionately being Republican voters.

I believe I said the other day that the problem for the GOP was that they can’t speak without someone spoonfeeding them talking points. And that as soon as someone came up with talking points then they would all start saying virtually the same thing about the birthers.
Now just go back and read the recent denunciations of birthers from prominent members of the GOP. They all start off with unequivocal statements about his citizenship and then they call it a distraction and then they denounce all of his policies, admittedly some more harshly than others.
Simply put folks the GOP is made up of nothing but sock puppets who can only regurgitate what their handlers feed them. This has less to do with some revelation on Steele’s party and more to do with the people pulling the strings finally realizing there was a problem and sending everyone a nice crisp new sheet of talking points on the issue.

The bill signed into law declaring Obama was born in Hawaii means absolutely nothing to the driving force behind the birther movement.
Besides, anyone who watched Colbert Report last night now realizes this has nothing to do with him being born in the U.S. any longer. Anyone who was watching could observe how fluidly Orly Taitz argument shifted when confronted with the possibility Obama was in fact born in Hawaii. She went from arguing it is only a certificate of live birth, which is the standard name for the document when you request it from hospitals in many states to stating since both of his parent weren’t American citizens he isn’t eligible regardless if he was born in Hawaii or not. Somehow to her/him or whatever Orly is, laws of other countries override our laws.
This is their argument. This will never end. The birthers will always exist, along with those that think he’s the anti-Christ.

Birthers are simply racists. The fact that the Birth Certifcate has been shown several times and has been inspected by independent sources.
They will not let it go. They are not going to stop until they get this president killed. The can not stand the fact that the president is a mixed race American who is really showing the new face of America as it moves toward the next century when whites will be the minority. Not just here but in the world. The white race has had its chance but the only thing the white race seems really good at is war. Not taking care of the earth or the people on it. Even the so called leader of the moment..(the lawyer/real estate agent/10 other career) said that its not about the birth certificate. She believes that b/c his father was Kenyan that means his has dual citizenship. So even though he was born in the USA to an American citizen he’s not American…OH PLEASE. Well, Obama and I have at least 1 thing in common – I also do NOT have my original birth certificate! And I can guarantee that we are not the only Americans whose originals were lost by either unorganized parents, too many moves, etc. So when I needed a passport, I had to get the best that New York has to offer since the originals have been destroyed (too little room in storage, I guess) – a certificate of birth. And what a coincidence – it looks a lot like the certificate that Hawaii issued to Obama. If I wanted to run for President, I guess I too would be in trouble.
Seriously, fellow Americans, Obama and I can’t be the only U.S. born citizens who don’t have their original birth certificates. Come on, you can admit it – because a missing original birth certificate does not mean that you aren’t a natural born American, does it? And I would challenge anyone who doubts the validity of the certificate that Hawaii issued to Obama to try to obtain a copy of their own birth certificate now, from the state where they were born. Because if you were born over 20 years ago, your state probably doesn’t have the original anymore. And what you will get will be exactly what Obama got from Hawaii.
And no, mine doesn’t show the time of my birth, or the name of the doctor who delivered me. But for that matter, the official and original birth certificates for my own children, born in Wisconsin, don’t have any of that information on them either!
At least Obama’s parents thought to put a birth announcement in the local paper when he was born. My folks didn’t even do that. Hmmm… maybe this is all a plot to cover up the fact that I am not an American, and everyone in my family has always just lied to get me to think that I am – oh, never mind. That just sounds like ridiculous paranoia.
And although I sometimes wish a time travel machine had been invented, one hasn’t been constructed yet, so I don’t think that there is any other explanation for the birth announcement in the Hawaii paper just after his birth.
Face it folks – unless you want to argue that time machines exist and the birth announcement was actually planted falsely by a time traveler, you just have to accept the fact that Obama was born in the U.S. of A.

I DO have my original birth certificate from 1945. It’s handwritten on a form printed on yellow paper. I could duplicate it easily with Microsoft Word. So what does it prove? A written form in blue fountain pen ink isn’t impressive. Steele didn’t actually contradict the birthers- remember that they don’t argue he isn’t an American citizen, they argue that he’s not “natural born”. Steele is just trying to play down the story (probably since the GOP has polled on it and found it to be a loser meme) WITHOUT speaking out against the birther’s main argument.
Nobody in this thread has their original birth certificate, nor would any of us be able to get one. The originals are on file in your state of birth. What you get when you request one is a copy. The copy of course does not contain all the information the long form has, because it isn’t needed. And a Certificate of Live Birth is what Hawaii calls a Birth Certificate, as anyone in this thread from Hawaii can testify to.

1) How did Obama travel to Indonesia, Pakistan and Kenya without a U.S. passport in the 1980’s. He didn’t receive his FIRST U.S. passport until he was in the Illinois senate. What passport did he use.
2) The live birth record shown on the internet is not a legal birth certificate.
3) Obama was registered as Barry Soetoe when he was in school in Indonesia. On all his official documents he has sworn that he never went by another name. Also, his religion is shown as Muslim on that school paperwork.
4) There is strong reason to believe that he did not register for the draft as required during that time period in his life. It’s interesting that current documents show his draft registration card has been tampered with and falsified.
5)On his first day in office he signed an order that sealed ALL documents that pertain to his past, including ALL school records, birth certificate, marriage license, college transcripts, his college thesis.
6) He was using a foriegn national scholarship when he attended Occidental College.
7) He went from an average student at Occidental to Harvard admission after a letter was written on his behalf from an attorney who represents the second richest Arab in the world.

FYI, his travel to Pakistan was during a time when U.S. citizens were forbidden to travel to that country. What passport did he use and under what foriegn national protection.The birth certificate is only the trigger to the smoking gun.

Also note that he says he believes Obama is an American citizen. That is not precisely what’s at issue for the birthers. To be president, you have to have been born on American soil, not just be a citizen. Naturalized citizens cannot become president. So it seems Steele is still trying to hedge his bets here.

The problem in this case is, Obama was not properly vetted-by the media, or other individuals-during the campaign. They refused to look at it. People went to the polls with the issue unresolved. Once the electoral process is done, then the responsibility for certifying the results and making sure it’s all according to the Constitution rests on the officials. So we’re at a different stage of the process. I don’t believe it would be a good idea to turn to the government to establish the qualifications of people who are running for office. That could be abused to limit the options of the people. If people are behaving with integrity, these facts would come out and then people would be able to make their judgment. This didn’t happen.

KEYES: I think politics is irrelevant to this, actually. I don’t see how it is showing fondness for Barack Obama to let him enter into office with a question that could be raised. He should not have to operate under that burden. I think the officials need to clear the air for his sake. From my point of view, it is a bad idea to have a president of the United States enter office with a cloud hanging over his head, where every time he tries to do something, he would end up frittering away time because of that objection. So let’s get it over with. Let’s resolve it and move forward with a clear an undisturbed mandate for the new president.
ESSENCE.COM: For argument’s sake, let’s say Obama is only a naturalized citizen, and was raised by Americans and grew up in the United States. What difference does that make to you?
KEYES: It makes a difference to the Constitution. The Constitution has to be obeyed. If we get into a position where it is somehow regarded as dispensable then this country will fall apart. Black people should be the first folks to remember that. Without adherence to the Constitution our battles would have never been won. I don’t want to live in a country where we are suddenly back in a world where the force of majority rules. I don’t think any of us do.
ESSENCE.COM: Would you be in support of amending that section of the Constitution?
KEYES: No, I would most certainly not. Today we are in more danger as a people of being subverted by foreign powers than we were when it was founded. It is possible, under our present rules in America, for folks from another country to come visit America, to have a child here, to take that child back to wherever, raise that child there, and that child would be an American citizen. Do we really think it would be right to have a person who has not lived in America, does not identify with our people, to run here as president of the United States?
ESSENCE.COM: That’s a different situation from what’s being questioned about Barack Obama.
KEYES: Rules have to be written in general. You can’t write a rule in every particular case. The rules established in the Constitution are general rules that have been abided by people throughout the history of this country. People have been excluded from running for president, people like Arnold Schwarzenegger. One has to think of the common good. This isn’t a question of individuals anymore. The key thing about the presidency, in my opinion, is that the person above all takes responsibility for the common good of the country. Our public officials do not swear allegiance to a country; they swear an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. That’s something to be taken very seriously. Those are the rules.

Is it really that unreasonable to stop and check to make sure a suspiciously non-white person whether or not all his papers are in order? This country has a long tradition of asking the black man for his papers. We had poll taxes, we had the precedent of the Dred Scott decision, which required free blacks in the north to prove that they were not in fact slaves. Just this month we had a black Harvard Professor arrested for displaying annoyance at having to prove that the house he’d broken into was his own. Barack Obama needs to recognize that questions swirling around his birth certificate are part of a long tradition in this nation. Why does he hate our traditions so much?
IT amazes me that people are even taking the time to argue about Obama’s birth certificate. But, then again, we label each other names like liberal, conservative, birthers, etc, and spew so much hate over such minor ****. It seems that liberals here would gladly exterminate all conservatives and vice versa over talking points brought up by who knows who.
Its time for everyone to realize that talking heads like Limbaugh and others are getting rich by keeping conservatives stirred up and angering liberals. Every educated person should be able to do their own research about any topic and not take the words of the talking heads as absolute truth. Those who lack the ability to do their own research from reliable sources should realize that they are being used by the talking heads as pawns to increase the talking head’s importance.
Steele did the right thing in trying to put this issue to rest and put the issue to rest once and for all. Had McCain been elected, there is no doubt that the same questions would have been raised because of where he was born. Find something more important to express hate over!

1. For starters, there are many countries who would give you dual citizenship and passport because of many reasons. The US looks the other way if you are naturalized citizen. Only one liner on the naturalization form, “do you bear allegiance to any other foreign nation, king or some thing of that sort”. One that is foremost is parentage. I know a co-worker from my last work, born in India educated and worked in UK and acquired British Passport, immigrated to Canada and acquired Canadian Citizenship. Finally in 1996 he became a naturalized US Citizen. Now many Israelis have dual citizenship and serve in their country’s Military draft requirement. So as long as you are Jew, you are a citizen of Israel. So it is possible because of his Kenyan lineage or his step father’s Indonesian lineage he could have travel to any of those countries on a different passport. As long as he was minor, he had no control or say in that matter.
2. For people asking his birth question legitimately, I can think of any body fooling ordinary people. Now fooling our Presidential Security and FBI with fake and bogus “Certification of Live Birth” is beyond me. I remember not too long ago a potential Presidential Primary candidate had to drop off because he wouldn’t clear Security Clearance. All presidential candidates are vetted by FBI.
3. Then again anything is possible for conspirator theorists. Now FBI would have discovered his linkage to foreign Arab bank rolling his education at Harvard. I remember some people of certain traits had questions about Bill Clinton’s association while he attended college on Rhode’s scholarship. His appearance in the old Soviet Union during the time of Vietnam. These people were successful in derailing the candidacy of John Kerry.
4. His first passport wasn’t issued until his Illinois Senate term. This would be after 1996 in which he was elected to 1st Illinois Senate term. In 1991 US Passport Agency would take more than three weeks for processing passport applications going through NCIC and background check. How any of these would escape is beyond me? It is possible that all of these agencies were on the take of people trying to have Obama elected in 2008.
5. His religion being registered as Muslim. His mother was an avowed Atheist. In Muslim religion, the child takes the religion of his father unlike Judaism. Again he being a child has no control in filling out his admission form. Assuming his father filled out the form and supposes of Kenyan Jew heritage none of this “birthers” would have raised an eye brow.
6. All president’s upon being elected to office seal their documents. Nothing new there.

In fact one of my son born in the US wanted to travel to India because of emergency when my mother passed away, I went to San Francisco US Passport office would not give me immediately. When has a politician ever told the truth? I have traveled outside the U.S and never got a passport until right before I was discharged from the military. See as a minor back then you could travel with your parents. As for my disappointment it’s not with our president, but with our other elected officials that can’t seem to get past their own ego’s to help the American people. What the president is trying to do is stimulate the economey and create jobs. The housing market is starting to move and even this will take some time. This didn’t happen over night and It will not be solved overnight, but I’m glad your caring about it but give the pres a break and let him try something new. He could of let all the banks fail like the investment companies did and we would be in real trouble. We let the last pres do it his way and it didn’t work. Give him his time. Thanks.

I just read through all the comments made. It was…enlightening. Personally, I think this country is going to have Barack Obama as its president for the next three years, regardless of any mistakes made by him or anyone else in the government. Arguing over the legitimacy of his birth certificate will only hinder any progress that could be made in areas of greater importance. I only recently turned 18, and I didn’t get to vote for either candidate. Our country’s problems have been growing for years. At least Obama is taking action to help repair our country’s problems. The splinter doesn’t come out of the finger unless someone brings out the tweezers. Our country may or may not have been better off without the bills that have been passed by the current administration, but at the same time, our country could have become even worse off if no action was taken.

Why is it that none of the 50 Secretaries of State bothered to perform the duties of their jobs in confirming a candidates eligibility to be on the ballot?Is the CA Secretary of State required to actually look at documentation of eligibility of can he simply accept an affidavit from a candidate? Does an opposing candidate on the ballot have the right to demand that the CA SOS confirm the facts contained in a different candidates affidavit? Does the CA SOS have an affirmative obligation to perform duties that can be enforced by a court order or is the only remedy for a “non-performing” CA SOS removal by recall or at the next election?
These are the legal issues to watch in the Keyes v CA SOS case. Not a “birther” conspiracy but actually a necessity if we are to preserve the integrity of our election process. Maybe the original Birth Certificate, which we now “know” (have been told) is on file, will show that The O is qualified under the Constitution to be President. Maybe not, but doesn’t it seem fit that a SOS would at least want to look at the document if another candidate files a protest?
Wow, imagine that, with all the spitting and screaming and insults, there actually is a real legal issue under all this that does matter – are candidates obligated to PROVE their eligibility or can a corrupt/incompetent SOS certify an “invalid” candidate to the ballot with no recourse from the voters or other candidates?

When you talk with friends who are curious why there is such a political/media campaign to discredit the “birthers”, it might help to explain that 50 SOS’s failed to do their job and the courts have determined that mere ordinary citizens have no legal standing to complain, so there are serious and legitimate legal issue at stake that can only be resolved if the actual original full and complete long form birth certificate is released.

I do not know if Obama is a natural born citizen, but I do see a lot of smoke in his hidden records and his legal fight to keep his rightful employers from viewing them. That is what bothers me most. That’s a website, dealing with rumors and urban legends, been running for over a decade. In this, they cite records and documents that prove that this whole mess is absolutely false.
Now here’s the imprtant part: they REFERENCE their article with IMAGES and FACT and CITE their SOURCES. Something none of the “birthers” do. Don’t tell me that “documents say” or “it has been confirmed that”, if you can’t produce such documents or confirmations. If one party keeps bringing up citations and sources and another party keeps shouting the same thing and refusing to do the same, we don’t have a debate or a controversy, we have whackjobs ignoring facts. Steele did a very DUMB thing. Obama has deliberately refused to show the public something that we have a right to see. WHY? And why would Steele risk alienating people who feel that it is illogical for Obama to refuse this request. I have been watching this for over a year. Obama has done everything in his power to avoid producing the paper that would prove he is a citizen. WHY? He has spent MILLIONS of dollars to avoid producing the real BC. WHY? I hope to God he is a citizen, but the people have the right to know. There may not always be fire where there is smoke, but it happens often enough to warrant checking. Obama’s actions are more than suspicious, and someone needs to investigate it. Steele is one of the few people who actually have the ability to take the risk and push for disclosure (and be HEARD). For those of you who cite Snopes and Fact-check, what you are missing is that while the documents that they examined appeared to be genuine, they are not the right documents! The documents prove that Obama was born. They do NOT prove that he was born in Hawaii, and that’s the critical point. It’s a simple thing, and one that could be straightened out in a second if Obama would release the vault copy.
So why wont he? Here’s where the conspiracy theory gets good. His grandmother claims that he was born in Kenya, and she was there. He and his sister have each stated that he was born in different hospitals in Hawaii. And, as Barry Soetoro (using his stepfathers name) he claimed to be a citizen of Indonesia, at a time when dual citizenship was not an option.
So that’s what it’s all about in a nutshell. Hopefully the conspiracy theorists are wrong, but why won’t Pres. Obama just produce the paper and shut them up? That’s the part that make no sense at all. And what Snopes and FactCheck don’t address.
Both major newspapers in Hawaii listed his birth. That’s hard to fake. Everyone from Hawaii (on this and other discussion threads)looked at the birth certificate produced and stated it looked just like theirs. I do not have a “long form”, and none of my children were issued one. And regardless, his mother was a citizen when he was born. It’s a pointless issue. If Bush wasn’t impeached for myriad reasons, Obama isn’t either. I could see how this would be an issue if the presidential race was close, but it wasn’t.
As to why not just produce them? Because that won’t help, and will encourage people who believe even more oddball stuff. The nation’s a mess, and we need more people at work instead of quibbling about non-essentials. And snopes covers two papers notice of live birth, provides a copy of the certificate, references they link to show his 1992 marriage certificate, driver’s license records, and registration and disciplinary records with the Supreme Court of Illinois. Also cite the Hawaii Dept of Health Director Chiyome Fukino and the Registrar of Vital Statistics Alvin Onaka as verifying it’s authenticity. Two cases have been thrown out for lack of evidence, and Obama’s teacher Barbara Nelson recalls a conversation with the doctor who delivered him, Dr. Rodney T West, who liked his name.
At this point, everything points to it being a rumor, and all of the “experts” who believe differently aren’t experts and can’t find a single concrete fact. Obama had a US passport when he returned from Indonesia to attend school in Hawaii. And he may have had a US passport, or at the least was entered on his mother’s US passport (which also required proof that he was a US citizen) when he went from Hawaii to Indonesia as a small child.
Re all the claims that Obama had to have a foreign passport to visit Pakistan: They also are all made up. In 1981 Pakistan welcomed US citizens to visit with 30-day visas. It was relatively peaceful and was eager to have tourists visit. And Pakistan was not on any no-visit list of the US State Department. So Obama could have, and did, visit on his US passport. He never had a passport from any other country. Britain will confirm if you call their embassy, and so will Indonesia.

They do prove birth in Hawaii. The Certification lists the place of birth as Honolulu, Oahau, Hawaii. And this has been confirmed by the two officials who looked into the file. This is legal, logical and witness proof. The original can show no more than this. However, if you want to see the original, don’t keep asking Obama. Obama does not have it. Obama asked Hawaii to send him a copy of his birth certificate in 2007 or 2008, and Hawaii sent him the Certification, which is what it sends to everyone.
It is Hawaii, not Obama who refuses to make the original birth certificate available. I’m sorry, but Chairman Steele needs to tend to his obligations and leave everything else alone. This is pretty much the same as Obama taking a position on the arrest of the professor. What is the bid deal? Obama has fueled this issue by not providing official documents such as the birth certificate and passport records.
Further Obama has been sued and not answered request for admissions and interrogatories which means he has made admissions under law.
Obama can clear this up easily if the claims are bogus.
I am not sure Steele is looking out for the truth here.
If anyone demands to see Obama’s birth certificate, they should first produce theirs, and then give both the attention they deserve: None.

The weird thing about all this born/not born in the USA, let’s-see-the-birth-certificate hubbub is that it doesn’t matter if Obama was born in or out of the USA. He’s a US citizen by virtue of US law section 1401G. Check out this site: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/8/1401.html. His mother was a US citizen and spent the required time in the US prior to Obama’s birth. His father’s situation doesn’t matter, but happens to exactly match 1401G.
