Did Obama Accuse Dick Cheney Of Torture?
Pretty interesting. President Obama also said this during the CBS News interview:
“”I fundamentally disagree with Dick Cheney. Not surprisingly. You know, I think that Vice President Cheney has been at the head of a movement whose notion is somehow that we can’t reconcile our core values, our Constitution, our belief that we don’t torture, with our national security interests. I think he’s drawing the wrong lesson from history.”
A reader points out that Obama himself here came awfully close to directly accusing Cheney of torture.
This would seem to be a big deal. If Obama has now said that Cheney sanctioned torture, how can that not have relevance with regard to the question of whether the Obama administration will support some kind of probe into what really happened during the Bush years?

I bet Dick Cheney is going to shut his mouth for awhile after this. The question is will any pressure be put on President Obama now to prosecute.
It is going to be VERY interesting to see how the political press plays this. Of course, they have served as Cheney’s buttboys in covering up his complicity in torture, war crimes, and other illegal acts. On the other hand, it’s a great opportunity for the press to jump on the hyperventilatory Drudge-horing that they are so addicted to by playing this as yet another Obama gaffe. What to do? What to do? Hyperventilate over Obama’s “gaffe” or play buttboy for Cheney? Break out the popcorn!
Above and beyond the torture what about Cheney’s stock ownership in for profit prisons built and run by Vanguard? How many are being held for profit?
That was not a gaffe. That was a gauntlet.
Both Obama and Holder have already said that waterboarding is torture, and the previous administration ordered waterboarding. So Obama has already accused Cheney of torture, now he should do something about it.
Yes, the gauntlet has been laid and the ax is about to fall on Cheney and whole the Bush admininistration’s unconstitutional torture campaign. The Obama administration will release documents detailing the degree to which the CIA and the government tortured Guantanamo Bay detainees, which means the Obama administration is saying, “let the truth commission and criminal investigations begin.” Thank God, Cheney does not know how to shup-up!
I think it was a message to Cheney to shut his pie hole. Obama is taking a political hit for not going after Cheney (so far) and Cheney is still out there running his mouth.
I also think he could have tipped his hand and that there is a possibility that the DOJ in building a case against Bush and Cheney and the reason why Obama wants to pass healthcare, energy independence and the rest within his first year, is that he’s going to go after BushCo soon after. The DOJ brought in a lot of outspoken opponents to the Bush torture programs, they could be building a case without any of the embedded Bushies really knowing about it.
Going after Bush right away would have been a partisan firestorm, however when Bush/Cheney is removed from being seen as the leadership of the GOP, the partisan response could be muted.

But if you notice Obama nor Holder ever pointed to who they felt was responsible for ordering the waterboarding. Notice the word “head” in the phrase “head of a movement”. Could be trouble thats all Im saying.
Obama and many others (Holder as many mentioned, even McCain) have in essence already accused Cheney of torture when they took the position that waterboarding is torture.

Obama goes a step further here though when he appears to say not only that Cheney sanctioned torture, but that he knew he was doing so. Or in other words, he appears to question Bush/Cheney’s good faith when they claim that they do not think waterboarding is torture and the US has not tortured.

I’m preying every day to hear from the FED they are firing all the Big 5 Banks CEO’S because they are who are trying to worse the Houses crisis.In my personal view and experirence they are not helping familys who really wants stay in their homes and only are pleased to help them with a loan modification lowering their payments and even if they are working but there’s hours were cut they want still paying with a good faith of the loan modification instead the Banks are aproving only a few and denied a lot.what they are trying is delaying the crisis and acting as a passive form of economic terrorism agaisnt the Goverment that we the US worker citizen elected….The goverment must act NOW and FAST before be late…..FIRED THEM………NOW
