Secret Service Investigating Facebook Poll Asking Whether Obama Should Be Killed

The Secret Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding an eye-opening Facebook poll that asked whether Obama should be assassinated, a Secret Service spokesman confirms to us.

“We are taking the appropriate investigative steps,” the spokesman, Ed Donovan, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson. “We are aware of it.”

The poll asked: “Should Obama be killed?” It offered four choices: No, Maybe, Yes, and Yes if he cuts my health care.

The poll, of course, is only the latest example of the sort of viral incitement to violence that flares up when the sparks of anti-Obama hatred are fed oxygen by the bellows of the Internets. While anyone can put up such a poll, this kind of stuff is a sign of the moment — as David Kurtz put it, it’s akin to graffiti on the virtual wall of our times.

According to a source, the Secret Service has contacted Facebook and asked them to take the poll down. And, indeed, it’s already down.

Given that the Secret Service is investigating the circumstances of the poll, it seems clear that they’re looking into who was behind it. More if we learn it.

Update: A lot of folks are Twittering at me that this blogger broke the poll story.

    Good thing I voted no!

The wingers better run and hide. 8^)

  2. Tena | September 28th, 2009 at 01:08 pm

Thank god they’re on it. I think they are taking almost everything seriously since the Wingers of August made it clear that they are loony and heavily armed.

I’ll just say it, though I don’t like saying it aloud: it’s going to be a miracle if we can get him through his time in office without incident.

  3. roxsteady | September 28th, 2009 at 01:08 pm

I don’t care if facebook didn’t conduct the poll. They should at the very least be fined for even allowing it. Don’t they have some kind of filter for this trash? I hope they’re fined. $20 million sounds good to me!

  4. amk | September 28th, 2009 at 01:08 pm

    God save america.

  5. sbj | September 28th, 2009 at 01:12 pm

    Truly disgusting.

O/T: Bill Nelson might support Shumer’s second amendment – the so-called level playing field public option (not tied to Medicare). If I understand correctly, this would be similar to the one that Waxman passed out of his cmte in the House. But isn’t that also NOT supported by progressives in the House?

  6. Americafirster | September 28th, 2009 at 01:16 pm

I can bet … the creator has to be either an Israeli or one the many israel-firsters living here.

  7. Crabby Abbey | September 28th, 2009 at 01:20 pm

@Americafirster – WTF? I’m sure it was one of our own undereducated rednecks. For sure! I took the poll after following a link through DKos – I wanted to see the results. 89% said No – 3% said Yes and I forget the other options. I hope they seriously prosecute whoever posted that. These idiots are just unbelievable.

  8. Jane Sargent-Hamilton | September 28th, 2009 at 01:23 pm

Why would anyone put up a poll like this? How sick is this individual? He/she needs to be investigate, they obviously have something seriously wrong with them. Facebook needs a moderator. It is become impossible to post on that site due to the wackos. They will attack you and call you the most god awful names with no repurcusions whatsoever. Come on FB wake up.

  9. Paul W. | September 28th, 2009 at 01:26 pm

Yeah sbj, I’ve been watching the “level playing field” amendment too. It basically constitutes a ho hum place holder for the public option that (ideally) could be expanded on when merged with the other, more progressive, bills.

  10. Bill Greene | September 28th, 2009 at 01:29 pm

I agree with Americafirster, it is probably someone in Israel. They hate Obama even more than the wingnuts here and are used to a culture of political assassination. This is all extremely sickening to watch.

  11. Raul X. Garcia | September 28th, 2009 at 01:31 pm

This was more than likely put up by a front for the RNC.

There have been many, many, Obama bashing polls posted on Facebook, and very sadly effective I must add.

  12. neuromi | September 28th, 2009 at 01:32 pm

Perhaps facebook left the poll up so the SS can find out who everyone who votes yes is. The l00ns should be exposed.

  13. jin | September 28th, 2009 at 01:32 pm

Come on! This is just a lunatic quirk. Nothing’s gonna happen to Obama. Let’s think positively!

  14. sbj | September 28th, 2009 at 01:35 pm

@PaulW: “the “level playing field” amendment too. It basically constitutes a ho hum place holder for the public option that (ideally) could be expanded on when merged with the other, more progressive, bills.”:

I’m not sure I understand why the cmte Senators would vote No on a robust public option but Yes on the level playing field option, and then switch on a combined Senate bill?

  15. sandy | September 28th, 2009 at 01:35 pm

Sometimes I’m ashamed to an American. What has this country come to? This is just disgusting.

  16. Paul W. | September 28th, 2009 at 01:39 pm

    @sbj
Simply because the Senate as a whole and the HELP committee bill (not to mention all three from the house) are more progressive. So if you have even the words “public option” in place for the FC bill then it would likely be expanded once placed alongside the more comprehensive public options that exist in every other version of health care reform legislation.

  17. Jersey Bob | September 28th, 2009 at 01:45 pm

    @Americafirster
    @Bill Greene

Both of you can go frakk yourselves. The fact is that Israel’s supporters are ALSO Obama’s supporters. Peddle your filth somewhere else.

  18. esprit | September 28th, 2009 at 01:45 pm

Incredible poll. Facebook should be fined and the persons who put this poll up should definitely be arrested for sedition and inciting violence toward an american president. How dare Facebook to allow this to be posted for as long as it was. No one should have been allowed to vote on such a dangerous poll. We all are on NOTICE. We are the public option to this crazy fringe which is growing daily. We must put a stop to this at once. Facebook, PayPal and the Secret Service need to hear from us. Our loud voices against anyone threathening our president should be immediately heard. Let’s get on it…yes we can!

  19. Sheryl | September 28th, 2009 at 01:46 pm

This is so sad, my god what is going on? This is just shameful and the lowdown person that put it up should be called out by anyone who knows that a&*h%$#!!!!

  20. Liam | September 28th, 2009 at 01:46 pm

How about we let the FBI investigate who set up the poll before we start blaming Israel.

All you had to do was notice some of the signs at those teabagger gatherings to learn, that there are plenty of hate mongers here in America capable of such words, and actions.

Let the FBI do their work, instead of scapegoating Israel.

  21. sbj | September 28th, 2009 at 01:48 pm

@PaulW: “Because the Senate as a whole and the HELP committee bill (not to mention all three from the house) are more progressive.”

Actually, the Waxman cmte bill uses the same level playing field not tied to Medicare rates public option.

I guess we just disagree? 60 votes are required and I don’t see Nelson voting against a progressive option in cmte only to change vote on a combined Senate bill. I don’t think he’s alone, either.

  22. michael | September 28th, 2009 at 01:48 pm

I too, am ashamed to be part of this “America”. I thought we had come so far in racial equlity but I was wrong. As much as I hated Bush, I had no wishes that he would be killed. This is Treason and needs to be enforced. What surprises me about htis “Christian Nation” is they are not true Christians..they are cowards who hide behind the cross.

  23. Cheryl | September 28th, 2009 at 01:49 pm

I fault the Republican party. They started with the hate rhetoric during the election when Palin was in Florida and no one said anything. Then with Michelle Bauchman in MN with her hate speech. Then it continued with Glenn Beck.

  24. Doreen | September 28th, 2009 at 01:50 pm

It is time to put these people in jail, and to publicize the event. This has gotten out of hand — time to pay the pipper, jerks.

  25. SJ | September 28th, 2009 at 01:50 pm

No, not anyone from Israel. One of the whackjobs right here in our country. I’m glad the SS is investigating. I imagine they can get ALL info from the company that had the poll. They need to investigate those that votes yes, in addition to the person that put the poll up.

  26. greylox | September 28th, 2009 at 01:50 pm

**Maybe it was a troll for crazies. At any rate, the FBI has their names now, so it’s all good.

  27. Liam | September 28th, 2009 at 01:51 pm

It is not important what SBJ thinks he sees, or does not see.

What is important is; that every one who supports a public option, continues to press their representatives to vote for it.

The outcome does not depend on what SBJ believes or wants. It depends on how your representatives vote. Let them know how you want them to vote.

  28. Tena | September 28th, 2009 at 01:54 pm

“It is time to put these people in jail, and to publicize the event. This has gotten out of hand — time to pay the pipper, jerks.”

Be afraid, be very afraid. There are people out there who listen to Glenn, Rush, and Sean and when they say “OBAMA NEEDS TO BE STOPPED”, this is just the kind of flint that they need for their fuse.

I do not EVER remember anyone saying any other President should be killed. Ladies and Gentlemen, the crazies are coming, and it scares the “heck” out of me!

  32. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 02:05 pm

How does anyone know at this point that it wasn’t another left-wing hoax?

“As much as I hated Bush, I had no wishes that he would be killed. ”

You might not have, but plenty of liberals did and expressed their wishes.

  33. Scott C. | September 28th, 2009 at 02:06 pm

    Jane Sargent-Hamilton:

Why would anyone put up a poll like this?

I wondered the same thing when, in 2003, The Guardian in the UK posted a question to its online readers: “Is it time to assassinate George Dubya Bush?” Of course, the link has since been disappeared by the ever honorable Guardian, as has the link to another article one year later in that same venerable newspaper in which the author wondered “John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr. – where are you now that we need you?” (The Guardian’s “apology” for the latter, such as it was, is still available.)

“I do not EVER remember anyone saying any other President should be killed.”

Either your memory fails you, or you were not paying very close attention.

  36. Mary Byron | September 28th, 2009 at 02:07 pm

The probability is that there will be an investigation of both the company and the individuals who voted “yes”. The issue is much bigger than the despicable manner in which some people voice their displeasure with government officials. It truly reflectsthe level of hopelessness MOST Americans feel about their stake in government. When a nancy pelosi can label public forum protesters as “terrorists”, this should wake us up. These people are only proclaiming what must of us are saying in our living rooms. It’s sad that some want to go to unacceptable extremes but on the other hand….whose listening when they go thru normal channels?

  37. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 02:11 pm

“I want to see a quote.”

You can start with looking up “Snipers Wanted” shown on national TV by Craig Kilborn.

You can look up John Kerry “joking” about going to the WH and killing Bush.

There were lots more. If you didn’t live in a liberal cocoon, you would know it.

And then we could discuss where to catetorize the routine labeling of Bush and Cheney as traitors, guilty of treason and war crimes, who should be executed. Tell me you never saw those daily calls by liberals.

Then tell me you believe Obama sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church and never heard him preach against American and whites.

  38. Jane Sargent-Hamilton | September 28th, 2009 at 02:12 pm

  39. Tena | September 28th, 2009 at 02:13 pm

“You can look up John Kerry “joking” about going to the WH and killing Bush.”

O I call total Bullshit on that. I’m not looking up anything – you made the claim, you find the quote.

It works like this: Ann Coulter: “The only remaining question (about Clinton) is impeachment or assassination.”

  40. Gia | September 28th, 2009 at 02:15 pm

Bunch of freaks. I hope they lock them up and leave them to the inmates mercy. Look pretty for your new cellmate morons!

  41. Tom | September 28th, 2009 at 02:17 pm

This kind of stuff happens because the people that should be bringing sanity to the discussion (namely the Republicans) fail to condemn or decry the kind of rhetoric that goes on and is promoted by Limbaugh and Hannidy. While these two didn’t say it, they sure set the tone of discussion and it doesn’t take a genius to make the leap from what they are saying to this poll.

I am sure the dummy that posted this thing is going to have a lot of explaining to do to the Secret Service (and hopefully to a judge). Of course I can almost hear Limbaugh now railing on the Secret Service for harassing the poor guy (or girl).

  42. Paul W. | September 28th, 2009 at 02:17 pm

sbj, I see you tying the argument in knots when it is quite an open book. Yes the Waxman bill has a similar public option… but it does have a public option, and this is from the most conservative committee in the House (just like the FC). If the two toughest committees both put forth some sort of public option then we can pretty much guarantee it will be in the final bill.
I don’t see any reason to disagree with you, in fact I am using the same talking points as you. However, you seem to think the momentum for a bill that emerges from the FC with the words “public option” in it will somehow be towards a weak public option instead of moving towards the generally much more progressive House (as a whole) and Senate (as a whole).

If Reid is doing his job right, and of course we can all question that, then he can pass a cloture vote with Ben letting the bill come to the floor even if he then declines to vote for the bill itself. It is the same goddamn thing we (proponents of significant health care reform) have all been asking Reid to do since this whole thing became bogged down in the FC. Let the conserva-dems vote against the bill if they must, but don’t allow your own party to filibuster against a bill when you have 60 Democrats in the Senate. I’m sure you have more objections up your sleeve, but there is no point in discussing the precise path to getting a bill now with several significant forks in the road for the Senate bill coming in the next few days.

  43. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 02:19 pm

Here is another place for you to start:

    http://michellemalkin.com/2008/06/04/assassination-fascination/

There are numerous collections and sources of Bush assassination chic on the internet. Do a google search and you’ll find no end of it.

  44. shades | September 28th, 2009 at 02:20 pm

To Mary Byron. Link please. When did Pelosi ever label public forum protests “terrorists”, and those are your quotes. Do yourself a favor and turn off Faux News. Your IQ will go up 20 points immediately.

  45. dougjay | September 28th, 2009 at 02:21 pm

Posted as a front for the RNC? I suppose anything is possible, but this was just a stupid Facebook app. What would the RNC gain by posting it, and how damaging would it be if it was traced back to them? The risk/reward ratio is just phenomenally high here. By far the most likely explanation is that this was just some moron who thought it would be funny to joke about killing the president. Perhaps there are a lot of these sorts of posts on Facebook, but there are also a lot of morons out there. The idea that this moron in this case happened to be a right-wing Israeli is only slightly more plausible. Why would an Israeli refer to healthcare as the reason to kill Obama? It seems that if you are going to risk imprisonment threatening the president, you might as well be upfront about the reasons you don’t like him.

And as long as Facebook took it down when it was drawn to their attention and have complied with the Secret Service’s requests, they have done nothing wrong.

  46. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 02:22 pm

“O I call total Bullshit on that.”

Sorry, doesn’t work like that. You can “call bs” all you want. You (like others) always make this claim that no one ever talked about killing Bush, etc. It is complete hogwash. I can’t help it you keep yourself ignorant of the facts.

But here is a clue, google Kerry and Bush and killing two birds. You might be surprised what you find.

  47. sbj | September 28th, 2009 at 02:22 pm

@PaulW: I appreciate your responses and I’m not trying to tie anything into knots! I agree that there are several significant forks in the road so who knows what will happen. I understand that you are urging Dems to vote for cloture even if they disagree with the bill, I just haven’t seen any No Dems agree that they would do that.

  48. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 02:27 pm

Here, Tena, I decided out of the goodness of my heart to fetch Kerry for you. It thought I should, since it has the bonus feature of confirming that Bill Maher is not very literate:

“Maher: You could have went to New Hampshire and killed two birds with one stone.

Kerry: Or, I could have gone to 1600 Pennsylvania and killed the real bird with one stone.”

That was 2006. Good luck spinning.

  51. Josh | September 28th, 2009 at 02:42 pm

Has anyone writing these comments ever heard of free speech? Sure whoever made the poll is either messed up or having a lame attempt at a joke, but people should be allowed to voice their opinions. Of course Facebook doesn’t have to allow that **** on their site, and they pulled it, but I’m very surprised by the huge number of people with no respect for the right to free speech.

  52. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 02:48 pm

    shades,

In answer to your challenge to another poster, it was a different Dem, Baron Hill, who called town hall protesters “political terrorists.”

Pelosi called them un-American and implied that they were Nazis.

    Reid called them “evil-mongers.”

Another Dem rep, from Washinton, called them brown shirts.

Perhaps you should unhook your brain from MSNBC and Olberman and Ed for a few minutes.

  53. rrp | September 28th, 2009 at 02:48 pm

You’ll note, quarterback, that the motive force for that novel (yes novel) on assassinating Bush, is that the guy was in love with Laura.

Besides, this is your evidence, a novel? I don’t see how you’re making an equivalence to the FB pool.

  54. pdsldl | September 28th, 2009 at 02:49 pm

I’m always torn with these kinds of issues. If we prosecute them for just talking then we drive them underground where it’s less likely the truly serious nutjobs will be found out before it’s too late. Facebook acted responsibly and took it down when made aware of it and should not be expected to read every post made before it is published. That is asking a lot of websites with millions of members/visitors.

  55. Ben | September 28th, 2009 at 02:58 pm

    rrp,

Read more carefully and set aside your blinders, is all I can say to you. Look at the other links and examples as well. Anyone who claims that Bush assassination, murder, and execution were not raised by the left is lying or hasn’t looked into it.

For that matter, look up the movie on assassination of Bush, or the Bugliosi book on his fantasized prosecution and execution of Bush, and their reception among liberals.

    You have no case.

  57. Mykelb | September 28th, 2009 at 03:01 pm

I hope that the IP addresses of the 3% who said no are followed up on by the FBI because this is outright domestic terrorism and should be prosecuted as a threat to national security.

  59. SchrodingersCat | September 28th, 2009 at 03:07 pm

@quarterback: THAT’s the quote from Kerry you’re all riled up about? Right. I’m sure he was threatening to go to the WH and kill the president with a stone. A sitting US Senator is going to go hit the president in the noggin with a big rock and take him out. LOL. That’s a ridiculous comparison.

And before you get all high and mighty and get your little panties in a twist, it’s unacceptable when either side engages in this type of rhetoric. Period. Left or right.

  60. louise | September 28th, 2009 at 03:08 pm

nice hostile update. why not just say that “this blogger broke the story instead of “a lot of folks are twittering at me”? would you do that if it were the NYT or your friends at TPM? would you like to be addressed in the same fashion?

  61. Snowdog | September 28th, 2009 at 03:09 pm

Quarterback – anyone who seriously thinks that John Kerry was threatening to assassinate Bush on national TV is an idiot. Of course, Googling that quote brings up nothing but a host of right-wing sites. No surprise there.

  62. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 03:14 pm

    Cat and dog,

    1. Read the other links and references.

    2. You’re not suggesting Kerry didn’t say this on Maher’s show, are you? I said Kerry joked about killing Bush. It isn’t disputed that he did. You don’t know that any knucklehead on Facebook was any more serious than he was. And don’t you find it outrageous for a US Senator to say this???

You are without a leg to stand on if you are trying to defend the statements made above that no one talked about killing George Bush. Get serious.

  63. DownriverDem | September 28th, 2009 at 03:23 pm

The Secret Service better be on this one. The right wing will be the first to say that they had nothing to do with inciting any violence if something happens. This has more to not accepting a duly elected president who happens to be black more than any thing else. I can’t believe how sick many in this country are. I want a publie option in the health care bill. I do not want a trigger to go with it. I don’t care about the cost while Americans are dying and the right wing are prancing around preaching hate.

  64. DownriverDem | September 28th, 2009 at 03:25 pm

Quarterback: I disagree. We did not talk about killing George Bush. We did wonder why no one did. That’s a big difference. We just wanted him to leave office and go away. He has done more than any president in history to destroy our once great country. Think about it!!

fb is pretty juvinile, lots of “text the cell, I love Brian” type of stuff.

This is the culture today. Get used to it, we all created it. It’s only going to get worse.

How about why is our party affiliated itself with corrupt organizations – and I mean badly and obviously corrupt? – Like how in the hell did we get associated with Acorn & the SEIU???

The damage control over this Acorn fiasco is horrible – the righty’s are silent now, but you can expect a full court press 12months from now and our dem members in the house & senate that are guilty of funding this organization are toast!

It is horrible- and the people in charge of this sort of thing need to be jailed – as to the congress/senate folks that have funded them all these years. Horrible horrible horrible. We lose the house next year – not due to policy or the economy – but because of our ties to these retards.

corruption is corruption – and there is no tolerence for it, whether on our side or the others.

I watched a Goggle posted video on the KKK and was shocked to hear one of their leaders state that Mr. O. will be taken out before his term. FBI needs to look at that video and find out who these militia people are and keep a close tab on them. The fringe has tasted power, sort of, in the past eight years and are eager to do the dirty work of those who would do anything to keep their privileged position, even if it means destroying the US. Unfortunately, their paradigm is excessively limited to realize the clock of history cannot be turned backward to control human progress. We either evolve with the world or face doom. Mr. O. is our only hope at the present time.

Or, just as likely, it could just be some airhead 16 year old kid who thought it was a “funny prank” to post it.

  71. Cat | September 28th, 2009 at 04:02 pm

If FB gets fined or penalized for a poll someone posted, then how about fines and penalties for Faux News and their sensationalist claims? I hope the Secret Service catches whoever is responsible for this, and I hope they are investigating all the hate-speech aimed at our President.

  72. Tony P | September 28th, 2009 at 04:07 pm

And I hope they investigate all the people that answered “yes” to the poll. They’re just as guilty.

  73. Wordsmith | September 28th, 2009 at 04:17 pm

Damned straight. I reported it to Facebook AND called the local Secret Service office and sent the url link to him. I was going off about how as much as couldn’t STAND Bush, I didn’t advocate anyone killing or hurting him. (Of course, we didn’t get into Dick…) ;)

  74. healthnut | September 28th, 2009 at 04:24 pm

the problem is – you only find it ahborrent when it’s your guy. you weren’t upset when people wanted Bush’s head on a plate.. but you should have been.

If you are truely equally offended by some idiot calling for a sitting President to be killed, then fine – but if you’re not.. or you make snarky comments yourself – then you are just part of the problem – and you should be investigated too.

  75. noscam | September 28th, 2009 at 04:32 pm

It’s Al Gore’s fault – he invented the internet.

I’m speaking for myself and the people I know and had contact with thruout Bush’s tenure in office. NO ONE wanted him killed or hurt. Out of office – yes. Prosecuted for war crimes, lying to the American people, etc. – You betcha.

Get off that stupid bent about ‘it’s ok when it’s not your guy’ bullsh*t. It’s not OK. It’s about the presidency. Effing period.

And get a gottdamned dictionary while you’re at it.

Quarterback Good for you and Im with you. Most of theAmericans commenting on this are not even informed of whats happening with our U.S.of America. Do any of you pray. By executive order Obama remove the morning pray from the White House. Was our country founded on in God we trust. This is just the beginning of the down fall of America. No assassination of our Pres.. God is in control and his plan will happen

  79. Mr. T | September 28th, 2009 at 05:03 pm

Get over it. The guy wasn’t trying to start an asasination squad but just asking if people wanted the president dead. Its his free speech to do such a thing.

  80. Liam | September 28th, 2009 at 05:08 pm

Well, if God is in control, and his plan will happen, then why the hell do we have to keep bugging the hell out of “him’ with our prayers?

By the way, why is God supposed to be a “him” how the hell do you know that, and since God is supposed to be unique, without a female counter part, what the hell does he need cosmic male genitalia for? Hmmmmm.

  81. South Austin | September 28th, 2009 at 05:12 pm

Here’s a better idea for a poll. “Do you think the people that think our president should be killed should be killed ?” No . Let ‘em have it rubbed in their faces for 8 years – and maybe for another 8 more with Hillary at the helm.

  82. wilbert | September 28th, 2009 at 05:15 pm

I’m a 41 year old black male I’m not racist or anything but I know for a fact if anything happens to our president the world would crack up blacks and white. There will be so many riots that the military would’nt have time to take care of the real problems we have in the United States they will have to worry about the fools killing up each other. So if we love our kids like we should leave the president alone because he won’t be the only one we would be mourning about please beleive that America…. Remember it’s in GOD WE TRUST!!!!..

  83. Cat | September 28th, 2009 at 05:16 pm

I pray and I trust in God, however, I seriously doubt God is going to take sides in our political debates…We’re ALL God’s children, so quit the sibling rivalry nonsense already, God’s got REAL problems to address, not made up **** to stir hate and divide us. And if you think THIS is the beginning, then I’m convinced you were asleep for the past 8 1/2 years. Crony capitalism is what’s taking us down, not whether or not they have morning prayer on-the-job at the White House.

@Sewman – History of ‘In God We Trust’per the Treasury website.http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins. From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania,

The creators of the poll are 1 of 2 people.

    1) Uneducated.
    2) Educated.

In the event the group responsible is the latter, they knew full well the press and publicity involved with something like this. Their sole intention, as proven by right wing neos, is to instill a statement into a belief simply through repetition. The more the press and blogs cover this, the more the message of “Should Obama be … ”

    Smart? = it’s a marketing move.
    Despicable? absolutely.

Let’s hope everyone behind this garbage gets what they deserve. Karma is not a pleasant thing to play with – good or bad.

  90. Maverickpoet | September 28th, 2009 at 05:57 pm

I’m betting it’s a republican, but wouldn’t be surprised if it was a politician or a staffer/aide. Since the internet is new to most of the republican party, I wouldn’t be surprised if this really was the case.

  91. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 06:00 pm

    Downriver,

“I disagree. We did not talk about killing George Bush.”

You are wrong, and I proved it above with multiple links. There are many more out there.

By the way, I didn’t raise the issue. I didn’t respond to this FB idiocy by saying “the left did the same thing.” Multiple posters above asserted that the left never talked about killing Bush or the need to kill Bush, as a way to make this FB poll seem unprecedented. I only refuted those absurd claims.

    Case closed.

The right wing nuts that bombed the Oklahoma federal building are alive and well and being fueled hate talk radio and Fox news.
Made us stories that Obama is not an American citizen, pictures depicting him as Hitler and Baby Killer, accusations that he is driving American into socialism, that he is a closet Muslim…even a recent poll showing that 16 percent of American think he is the Anti Christ who hates white people will probably congeal soon in the form of a gun crazy messiah who will attempt to save the world by assassinating the President.

The right wing talk show boobs pretend to know nohting of the sort…but in their minds that’s their hope…that a bullet will bring them back to power.

  94. quarterback | September 28th, 2009 at 06:25 pm

    norris hall,

The left spent years daily calling (in words and images) Bush Hitler, a mass murderer, a terrorist, a war criminal, a traitor guilty of treason, of being a fascist dictator, of planning imposition of martial law and refusal to transition power, of domestic ethnic cleansing of blacks, of committing genocide . . . it goes on and on. And many fantasized about his killing.

You weren’t upset then, I fell pretty safe in assuming. That makes you just like the rest of the liberals here.

By the way, think of how ridiculous your punchline argument is: “The right wing talk show boobs pretend to know nohting of the sort…but in their minds that’s their hope…that a bullet will bring them back to power.”

The buffoon Joe Biden would be next in the line of succession, following by the Stalinist dimwit Pelosi. Not exactly a plan to bring conservatives to power, is it?

  95. Jim L | September 28th, 2009 at 07:04 pm

On the 60 vote requirement, that vote is a procedural vote (to close debate on a potential filibuster) and not a direct vote on the final health care bill (whatever it may be). If ANY democrat votes against closing debate he/she will be gone next election. A democrat can vote for closure (or cloture as they say in the Senate), then vote his conscience against the health care bill. It would be completely unhealthy politically for a democrat knowing that 58 democratic senators want the bill and it is defeated on the filibuster vote. Guaranteed that the 60% vote will pass for cloture.

The real problem that our Nation is experiencing started years ago and now is coming to ahead. The elected officials, republicans and democrats, have stolen the National Treasury through bribes, kickbacks, and pork. All the problems that we face today can be attributed back to money! It has become a fight between the haves and have nots. The have nots are rising in voting power, though they pay little or no taxes. The haves are tired of paying higher and higher taxes due to the corruption of our elected officials at all levels of government. The people that have nothing want more government in their lives. Those that pay for it want the handout Nation to end.
Our Nation was founded on self-reliance and hard work. We have a large group of Americans that think they are owed and have rights to goods and services, even though they may not have the means to purchase such goods or services. While everone has the opportunity to do well, it is not a right that everyone will. Money for Nothing and Checks for free have got to end.
And this is where the current poll everyone is blogging about has it roots… the battle of the haves and have nots!

  102. TK | September 29th, 2009 at 02:10 am

What’s a firster anyway? Why are some people here responding to hatred with more hatred randomly aimed at Israelis? I can tell you for sure that Israelis do not by and large hate Obama and are more free thinking and socialist- minded than most Americans. You can’t define the whole population by the right wing fringe and govt.

  103. Clyde Smith | September 29th, 2009 at 04:09 am

This stuff really brings out the freaks.

The hate mongers should realize that if anything happens to Obama, there’s going to be hell to pay.

I hope we don’t see that because a lot of people will die and some of them will be relatively innocent bystanders. Property destruction will be even more widespread. Mark my words if they get their wish.

Let’s just hope the Secret Service does a better job than they did with Kennedy.

  104. Sewman | September 29th, 2009 at 07:22 am

That despicable poll is simply a sign of a larger, racist, un-American, FRINGE group that is sadly growing by leaps and bounds in this country. In my opinion, anyone who can create such a horrific poll like that, is Un-American, un-patriotic, and might I say, seriously unhinged. Normal people simply don’t do things like that.

  106. Victoria | September 29th, 2009 at 08:05 am

I would also add, that like many Americans, I have noticed a culture of hate and bitterness fostered amongst a great deal of people who verbally attack President Obama. I have seen unbelievable hatred directed against the President, one of these manifestations of hatred being absolutely vicious, degrading imagery depicting President Obama in a way that would make one think they were living in 1932. Very often, at least from my perspective, this hostility is based in racial animosity. I would agree that websites like Facebook need to enact stronger rules. And, ALSO, perhaps there needs to be a dialogue begun precisely about this “culture of hate” and how destructive to the nation it truly is.

Your children are being indoctrinated in school as I write this. If obama’s **** is forced upon us you or your children will at some point cry for freedom. I just can’t understand the stupidity of the left. And when you have men dieing in the field you don’t go to Denmark on a jaunt. 112. Jim Scott | September 29th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Some pimply-faced juvenile trying to get everyone stirred-up is the likely culprit for the stupid post about harming the President. Facebook (and any other sites accepting postings) should moderate their site for ‘over the top’ posts which go way beyond freedom of speech. That said, people who are quick to blame any criticism of Obama on race are also ignorant…most times it is probably a reaction to Obama’s radical, far left policies. The USA is historically a center-right country and isn’t likely to change everytime a liberal administration comes into power for a few years.

Just to meet the attacking comments head on I do in fact like Obama.

  117. Eric Arthur Blair | September 29th, 2009 at 05:18 pm

I hope they trace and investigate every “yes” vote as well. Meanwhile, Business Insider (at http://tinyurl.com/l3w8s3) reports “Facebook Investor Peter Thiel Funded ACORN Sting”. So maybe Facebook had something to do with it after all.

  118. Tim McGuire | September 29th, 2009 at 06:07 pm

Yes, I think it was reprehensible that someone on Facebook posted a poll asking “Should Obama be killed?” Facebook was correct to delete it, and the Secret Service is doing the right thing by investigating it.

However, a quick search shows that there are currently 726 Facebook groups with “Kill Bush” in the title (the link below searches for them.) Do you suppose that those generated the same controversy? Should the Secret Service investigate the creators and members of those groups?
    http://www.facebook.com/search/?init=srp&sfxp=&q=kill+bush

  119. Victoria | September 30th, 2009 at 09:18 am

quarterback, I think that it doesn’t necessarily help to clarify a political stance by delving into exaggeration and hysteria by going so far as to compare Bush to a beast like Hitler. So no, I don’t agree with those protesters’ tactics. I think that’s delving into melodrama. However, Bush’s opponents never did portray him in specifically racially-demeaning imagery like I have seen President Obama portrayed in. I have seen tremendously disrespectful imagery portraying the leader of the most powerful country on earth as a ghetto, watermelon-eating caricature. There was no negative propaganda specifically targeting Bush because he is White. There were no opponents of Bush hating him because he is White. There is another key difference. While I saw very angry people who launched very angry verbal attacks against Bush, I did not see frightening polls and sentiments amongst people mentioning terms like “assassination”. While a great deal of Americans disapproved of President Bush’s policies, I saw very few who were crazy enough to voice violent sentiments, such as the Facebook poll. That is the MAJOR and most important distinction.

  120. quarterback | September 30th, 2009 at 09:44 am

    Victoria,

    1. You obviously haven’t read through some of the items linked and referenced and plenty of others that are readily discoverable on the web. Your comments have no credibility because they are patently ignorant of undeniable facts: Bush was portrayed as Hitler, a monkey, a vampire, a blood-soaked joker, and in innumerable other offensive ways. And fantasies of his murder or execution were rampant. Stop denying what is undeniable and proven above.

    2. Your distinction between race-based hatred and everything else is (a) morally false and (b) factually false. Bush was routinely villified by the left for being a WHITE, WASP son of privilege who was therefore presumptively stupid, irresponsible, and undeserving. He was portrayed as well as an ethnic cleanser and race murderer. (And he was routinely portrayed as a monkey or chimpanzee.) Don’t tell me that race hatred was not given loud and routine voice by the left — the white left and the black left.

Your claims and distinctions are false and have been proved false.

  121. quarterback | September 30th, 2009 at 09:50 am

    Tim McGuire,

That is unbelievable even after having seen all the anti-Bush filth I’ve seen on leftist sites. It needs to be publicized.

Greg, if you are listening, I think you have a responsibility to highlight this in a post, after playing up the Obama FB poll. If you aren’t going to give the huge number of “Kill Bush” pages on FB the same publicity, then you should explain why.

    Victoria,

Time McGuire’s link makes your position rather untenable.

  127. Victoria | October 1st, 2009 at 06:15 am

quarterback, my “claims and distinctions” have not been proven false because you say they have been proven false. Get off of the self-righteous soapbox; it makes it hard to have a half-way intelligent discussion with you.

Regarding people’s depictions of Bush as a “nazi”, vampire, ape, while melodramatic and a bit over-the-top, many Americans’ anger was being stoked by Bush’s overeall incompetence as a president. President Obama is not generally regarded as an incompetent leader, except by a smaller, angry group of opponents. So, therefore, the racist imagery takes on a decidedly nasty tone.

I have seen a good deal of the people who make verbal attacks against President Obama and in many cases, it is entirely rooted in racism. It is entirely rooted in an unwillingness to see the scales balanced and have both Whites and Blacks working on an even keel. It is entirely based in an unwillingness to see an African-American have what they perceive as “authority” over them. Almost immediately after President Obama’s election, a group of New York youths stalked the streets and attacked a Latino man, because of their fury at the election of Obama and who they viewed as voting him in. Were there youths stalking the streets of a major American city attacking random White passersby after the election of Bush? You cannot even begin to answer that question because you know it most certainly never happened. While there were various individuals who, admittely, probably disliked Bush because of his background, it did not take a vicious, violent overtone of hate crimes and polls on the internet calling for “assassination”. Any denial of these UNDENIABLE facts, I would personally consider false myself.

Regarding people who have voiced violent sentiments against Bush, that would be absolutely, unequivocally WRONG. Violent rhetoric should always be condemned, by both right and left, for we live in a free and democratic nation, not a savage jungle, which is precisely WHY sentiments such as the Facebook poll should not be tolerated and why there possibly should be a dialogue opened about what exactly kind of sentiment lies behind these out of control Obama attacks.

  128. Marianne | October 1st, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Obama has done this to himself by lieing to the
Aerican people. Obama and his fat ugly wife have done all they can to kill America. Obama is not transparent and has not shown one record to prove he is even a natural born citizen, He may be a citizen but by his own admission his father is British citizen. This is why Americans sre angry, obama lies are every where. Every president has has attempts to kill them. Obama most likly has a Pope Mobile just to go to the toilet in the White House. It will be someone close to him who will step aside and allow the kill to go down. Obama is 50% white 6.5% black and the rest is black Arab. It’s a shame that obama shows so much hate toward Whites. So many dumb whites voted for him believing his lies. If he gets through his 4 years it will be because the nation don’t want riots in the streets. Have any of you noticed how eveything obaama tries to do gets kicked down. Chicago won’t get the Olypics, Who wants to go to a town of crooks and killers like in Chicago. I wish somoene would dress Michelle it’s crazy the ugly clothes she wears that make her look fatter. My husband says he is not surprised that obama looks at skinny white women. Soon we will be hearing about another Monica under the desk! I won’t blame obama. He should divorce Michelle and find a white winner that seems to be what he wants. Or being Msslim Arab he can get a second wife that may give him a son.
It will interesting to see how things go down.
