Fox News Polls Obama’s Bow, Finds Majority Of Republicans Support It

The internals of the new Fox News poll show the network actually polled Obama’s bow — and perhaps didn’t get the desired answer:

When the president of the United States is traveling overseas, do you think it is appropriate for him to bow to a foreign leader if that is the country’s custom or is it never appropriate for the president to bow to another leader?

Yes, bow when it is the proper custom: 67%
No, it is never appropriate: 26%

Even more interesting, a majority of Repubicans, 53%, says the Bow is appropriate, too, versus only 40% who said it isn’t.

It’s another sign, if you needed one, of how far off to the right some contemporary conservative discourse has drifted. It’s also a mark of how absurd it is that some traditional news orgs actually felt obliged to, er, bow to the pressure to cover this particular line of criticism.

*********************************************

Update: Of course, it’s always possible that the poll’s question is flawed in that it didn’t make it clear enough how deeply Obama bowed and how weak and prostrate he really looked.

I’m actually surprised about the Republican thing – considering a majority apparently believe ACORN stole the election for Obama, lol. But that’s very cool.

with a question like that, who knows what the people are answering “Yes” to: the phrase before the word “or” or the phrase after? Personally, I agree with the bowing in this case

    @John: Great point.

  4. sbj | November 19th, 2009 at 03:23 pm

@John: Nevermind. The full text of question makes it clear:

When the president of the United States is traveling overseas, do you think it is appropriate for him to bow to a foreign leader if that is the country’s custom or is it never appropriate for the president to bow to another leader?

SCALE: 1. Yes, bow when it is the proper custom
    2. No, it is never appropriate for the president to bow
    3. (Don’t know)

They MUST be RINOS! Kick them out of the party!

    That’s funny! I wouldn’t have thought that.

that’s actually a good point, sbj. I added the full text of the answers.

I just wish they’d show a little respect for their own President.

  9. American Delight | November 19th, 2009 at 03:47 pm

Regardless of how many Republicans think its acceptable, having an American president bow before a foreign monarch is unacceptable. After all, this country fought a revolution against monarchism.

  10. lmsinca | November 19th, 2009 at 04:02 pm

Yeah, we also fought a war against the Japanese, guess we should just cross them off our list of allies, along with the British and Germans, good thinking.

AD. You’re right. I mean, WHO doesn’t remember all the outrage when NIXON bowed to MAO who is responsible for tens millions of deaths during his rule.

Sometimes the people at Cluster-Fox display their stupidity in ways that defies imagination…Humans should not act this way if rational thought ever existed within these folks…

How do you get, for example, people like Monica Crowley, who comes across as one of the most lame individuals ever to utter a phrase in any language, that allegedly has a PhD??? From Where – the Moon??

  14. Murray Abraham | November 19th, 2009 at 04:46 pm

Concerning your update. Only in our eyes may he have seemed “weak and prostrate”.
He did it very naturally and the bow lasted considerably less than when Japanese salute the Emperor.
To a Japanese eye it was a sign of respect but not of deference.

  15. Blondetwit | November 19th, 2009 at 04:48 pm

lol – re the update at the bottom:
I initially thought it said “…how deeply Obama bowed and how weak his prostate really looked.”
As are many things, yet another indicator of my advancing age.

Murray — I was being ironic.

We’ll they’ll bury this poll for sure, since it doesn’t jibe with their pre-determined, hyper-biased narrative.

Mike, Nixon should never have bowed before the Chinese. I condemn all three bows (Nixon’s to China and Obama’s to the Saudis and Japanese). Got any other examples?

  22. News Reference | November 19th, 2009 at 09:45 pm

Right winger “American Delight” doesn’t know his history.

Republican Nixon bowed to a COMMUNIST Chinese leader.

Republican Eisenhower bowed to the Socialist French leader.

Republican Bush kissed a male Saudi dictator and then held his hand.

I understand that The Right Wing’s First Rule Is: Rules Are For Other People, but there is PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE of Republican Presidents bowing to a COMMUNIST leader and a DICTATOR.

And that whole men kissing men thing might fly in Vermont and France, it sure is funny listening to right wingers trying to explain Republican Bush’s literally kissing up to a male Dictator.

    —-
As for Obama, has no one noted how much Obama towered over the Japanese gentleman? Obama’s bow barely brought his head lower than the head of the Japanese gentleman.

It seemed a deeply appropriate, culturally conservative GESTURE to signify respect to more than just an individual but to an entire culture and a significant ally.

I’m curious, has anyone seen polling of Japanese reactions to the bow? I’d anticipate that it was hugely appreciated by a vast majority of our Japanese friends.

I dont know where the guy that wrote this article got his information but it is not accurate at all. If you want to see the real poll numbers look them up.

Chris Matthews also seems to belong to the fringe on this issue. He kept criticizing Obama for the bow on Hardall. It’s that whole macho thing at work.
