Washington Times Reports On Obama’s “New” Flag Frenzy

And now for a bit of late afternoon comic relief. The Washington Times made a valiant grab for a Drudge link and some cable news love today, running a story titled: “Obama has new flag frenzy.”

The piece claimed that the flag-festooned backdrop of President Obama’s stimulus bill signing yesterday signaled some kind of shift. “Look. It’s President Obama, and he’s surrounded by American flags,” the piece said. “That’s the same president who once would not wear an American flag pin. Things have changed.”

The Note, inexplicably, listed the piece as a “must-read,” and Politico’s Mike Allen exclaimed that “cable’s gonna go cuckoo over this.” Doesn’t take much, apparently.

Thing is, as The Note, Allen, and everyone else knows (but no one pointed out), the idea that Obama’s flag pin and flag-heavy backdrop is something new is completely bogus. How do we know this?

From The Washington Times, June 20, 2008 (via Nexis):

Photographers were definitely not kept out — they were urged in — when Mr. Obama met with several retired military officers to suggest that he is, too, tough enough to be the commander in chief. He wore his flag pin on his lapel, and flags fluttered everywhere…The Democrats have clearly rediscovered God, generals and the flag.

D’oh! Needless to say, today’s story got its Drudge link, though I’m not sure if cable went “cukoo.”

It’s almost like they still can’t believe he’s president.

I’ve said this before….why do we all keep paying attention to anything the hacks at the Politico say? Garbage journalism at its finest, IMHO.

I guess this is what’s known as an evergreen story :)

A President in front of flags, imagine that.
    .
Whats next? “Look its President Obama flying on a PLANE with a flag on it”
    .
These people can no longer be parodied. The original is just too good!

OT/ADMIN: Greg, I’ve commented on this on a couple of earlier posts but maybe late, after they’d scrolled down and you weren’t closely reading comments.

Please consider making sure that the documents in the ‘Pages’ section have dates attached. Only 3 of the 12 docs there now have dates, greatly diminishing their usefulness as references. It would be a good idea to fix this before the task grows unmanageably large. Thanks in advance.

Hey, who you gonna believe, the Washington Times or your lyin’ eyes?

And sadly, cable news can’t “go” cuckoo; they’re already there…

hey Nell, thanks for that. I totally agree, the pages don’t currently make sense, because it’s unclear what they’re relevant to . we’re making some changes, including dealing with that problem.
