Poll: Sizable Majority Says Cheney’s Opinions Are Not Important

Check out this amusing number buried in a Rasmussen poll:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney has been speaking out lately on a number of topics. Now that he has left office, how important are Dick Cheney’s opinions?

17% Very important

22% Somewhat important

26% Not very important

31% Not at all important

4% Not sure

Fifty-seven percent say Cheney’s opinions are not very important or not at all important, with nearly a third overall falling in the latter category. Only 17% say his opinions are very important, and barely more than a third overall (37%) accord his opinions any importance.

I’d tally up how many times the cable nets have granted Cheney a platform to air views that a sizable majority says aren’t important, but it’s Friday and I’m too lazy. Yes, there are reasons that Cheney’s comments constitute news, but the disconnect between the public and those making the news judgments is, as always, kind of remarkable.

As a side note, it would be interesting to see a poll on whether people think Liz Cheney’s opinions are important, too, given all the air time she’s been getting lately.

Update: I misread this; it’s not a new poll. My bad. I should have brought it to you when it came out, so better late than never. Indeed, the poll is still amusing and relevant, especially in light of the seemingly endless cable appearances the Cheneys continue to enjoy.

Other poll news: “In Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate race, a new Quinnipiac poll finds Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) leads former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-PA) by nine points, 46% to 37%.
Specter had a 20 point lead at the beginning of May.”

Gotta love it when a 9 pt advantage means “He’s in BIG trouble” lol

we’re on verge of solving underline problem. stay tuned.

@sgwhite: Who said Specter’s “in BIG trouble?” BTW: Does Specter have ANY supporters at this site?

  6. sgwhiteinfla | May 29th, 2009 at 03:04 pm

Funny thing about the Specter polling.
    .
    1. He actually goes up a point vs Toomey from the earlier poll with independents.
    .
    2. The majority of the loss in support comes from Democrats.

    .
Somehow if Specter gets out of the primary and Obama campaigns for him I don’t see that 9% margin getting any closer.

  7. Greg Sargent | May 29th, 2009 at 03:06 pm

okay. is the underlining fixed now in comments after this one?

  8. sgwhiteinfla | May 29th, 2009 at 03:08 pm

Actually, I’d like to see a poll on how Repugs feel about George W now starting to come out publicly in favor of torture. Or just on his getting his face in front of the public at all.

    lol

Underlining fixed in most recent two posts. Thank goodness. It was a real test of loyalty. What the heck happened?

  14. dmv | May 29th, 2009 at 04:45 pm

    And the last time I checked, 7+2 = 9, not 7. So 17+22=39, not 37. :)

I won’t ever vote for Specter – never have and won’t start now – not ever. He needs to retire.

As far as Cheney – he’s not news… it’s just all thats out there & there is no one else articulating anything from the right. What ever happened to Dan Quayle..? no one cares… or Gore (other than making millions off being green), or Mondale, etc… VP’s that don’t go on to higher office are quickly forgotten.

Plus – Greg – what’s Cheney get a speech? Are these engagements “paid”? Just wondering.

This poll just proves how irrelevant the Cheney’s are. Who the f cares what they think or say? After 8 years of being lied to all the time, most people couldn’t wait for him to be out of office. (as evidenced by President Obama’s election).
Which does beg the question, why does the MSM give them so much air time? Or any other irrelevant rethugs? Especially the likes of Gingrich, Rove, Kristol, etc.

  17. Dave Bearse | May 31st, 2009 at 01:47 pm

With any luck, someone in the GOP will tell Cheney he’s no longer President any more in time for him to run for a third term in ‘12.

I was upset over the amount of time given to Dick Cheney to lie about his past. But I really blew a gasket when MSNBC, Morning Joe gave Liz Cheney an HOUR, to further her father’s lies. I have stopped watching Joe Scarborough, Pat Buchanan and Mika Brezenski.

I agree. It’s important to keep in mind that the goal of public relations is to help an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other.

Pretty meaningless poll, really. Perhaps we should look for a poll about whether people think Al Gore’s opinions are important.

In other Rasmussen polling, majorities say Congress is unlikely to pass legislation that will address our problems, and a large plurality says deficit reduction is more important than health care reform.
