Palin Camp Rips Limbaugh, Hits His “Retard” Comment As “Crude And Demeaning”
Sarah Palin versus Rush Limbaugh!
Palin believes Limbaugh’s repeated use of the word “retard” yesterday was “crude and demeaning,” her spokesperson emails.
In the wake of Palin’s demand that Rahm Emanuel be fired for saying the liberal activist strategy on health care was “f–king retarded,” a bunch of people have been asking how she’d react to Limbaugh’s tirade on the air yesterday.
“Our political correct society is acting like some giant insult’s taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards, retards,” Rush said, adding that Rahm’s meeting yesterday with advocates for the mentally handicapped was a “retard summit at the White House.”
I asked Palin spokesperson Meghan Stapleton for comment on Rush’s rant, and she emailed me this:
“Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name calling at the expense of others is disrespectful.”
It hardly has the passion of her response to Rahm, and there’s no call for him to step down. But given Rush’s stature among conservatives, it’s pretty interesting that she went this far, denouncing his on-air rant as “crude and demeaning name-calling.”

It’s such a shame that people believe everything they read. The liberals are exagerating the facts once again & trying to draw attention away from their own troubles. Rush is so good at predicting how the liberals will twist what he really said. If you didn’t hear him with your own ears, don’t comment. I heard exactly what he said.
Tom, I can’t imagine why you would feel that way. I find it sad honestly. Not sad condescending. Just sad… cynical about the world kind of sad I guess.
I have a 4 y/o son who was born with a brain injury to his central occipital. He would technically be diagnosed via the DSM IV as “mentally retarded.” He is slow, he has cognitive and developmental delays and he will NEVER be “typical.” Not ever… thank God. He has several brothers and sisters and he is adored beyond all human comprehension. He is the light of our lives and a gift from God. I often tell people that while I love ALL my children it was our sweet little Ben that taught me how to truly love and how to give your heart and soul to someone and let them walk around with it. People sometimes look at us with pity because all they see is a little boy that doesn’t “look right” or “act right” and I just smile and say “God must love me more because He entrusted me with this amazingly special little soul.”
I don’t feel I’m being “oversensitive” about anything when I hear people throw around the R word like it’s nothing. It infuriated me to hear that Emanuel had used it. It infuriated me to hear that Limbaugh had used it. I’m not hyper sensitive about anything. I am just a mom loving my son and wanting the world to understand that just because he’s not like YOUR kid doesn’t make him less valuable or important or LOVED. Ben may just grow up and change the world. You never know. What I do know is that every life that he has touched has been blessed and people… his doctors, teachers, therapists (physical, occupational, speech), principals, surgeons, nurses, phlebotomists, classmates, bus drivers (yes, he rides the short bus), lab techs, friends, camp counselors, babysitters, neighbors, aunts and uncles and cousins, other children, ect. tell me so every day. Not over sensitive no. Just kind and caring.
I saw an advertisement I really liked… I said “I feel like such a ******… said the chink to the ******.” There are words we don’t use, not because it’s the PC thing to do but because it’s the right thing to do.

Limbaugh’s remarks toward handicapped people can not be real. Palin’s guarded response to Limbaugh’s remarks compared to her atomic response to Emanuel’s off hand private is a pretty sad example of republican looking for any reason to attach a democrat. The only reason the former is considered unthinkable, while use of the latter has become a national sport, is that civil rights crusaders have worked longer and more effectively on educating the world about intellectual disabilities (ID) than about other brain disorders. Recent public understanding about depression is encouraging, but only because the media has been and still is inundated with knowledge about this tragic disease.
However, there has been much less success on such neurological diseases as schizophrenia, for several main reasons: Not as much information pertaining to diseases under the label “crazy” has reached the public; depictions of such sufferers have been overwhelmingly negative (e.g., as “axe murderers” and other dangerous types) and ubiquitous; it is much easier to understand depression (i.e., everyone is sad once and awhile; depression is several orders of magnitude worse and is chronic). It is very difficult for most to understand schizophrenia, which is a disease of the very basis of that which makes us human; so most seem unwilling, in practice,to believe that our minds have anything to do with our brains, although we give it much lip service.
A good litmus test pertaining to the acceptability of using the “C” word is, when temped to say “crazy,” think about inserting the word “retarded” instead. If such reasoning would be universally used, our ideas about what is right and wrong would be enlarged; people might hold reasoning in higher esteem than blind faith and prejudice; and maybe, just maybe, we will begin to treat each other better.

Why are you so intolerant of my first post? Would you point out exactly what the offensive lines are? I had no intention to insult anyone. I only meant to educate and invite those who tend to mimic, to think; and thus make life more tolerable for all.
My presentation was genuine and not “pseudo-” anything; it is fully factual. It required several hours to write and edit, since I am very slow in regards to my motor functioning. Often the keys that I click have nothing to do with those I “will” to do so. (I first became aware of this when I attempted to teach myself to type in 1971.)
My wife and I have volunteered for many scientific brain studies in the past decade, most at the University of Minnesota, and mine have shown the full ravages of a near lifetime of schizophrenia. Approx. 25% of my brain has been destroyed by this disease. Every so often, new and permanent symptoms appear, such as hearing voices, and losing a few seconds (I hope only a few!) of time.
This horror usually strikes at a time when the victims have yet to finish their educations; it almost always lasts for the remainder of their lives. So, though much has been invested towards them, they are usually unable to contribute to the economy thereafter.
It is The disease that destroys exactly the brain regions which makes us uniquely human. Thus it is the most difficult for most to understand. By contrast, Alzheimer’s Disease affects the whole brain, and destroys far fewer brain cells. Also, it almost always dehabilitates during the last few years of life, after the sufferer has made a maximal contribution to society.
ID victims have by all means no monopoly on intense suffering. Nor are other brain disorders any less real. Physicians and scientists have described schizophrenia as “the worst thing that can happen to a sentient being.” (Yeah, tell me something I don’t already know.) If you disagree, you are probably quite blessed; in a relative sense, that is. Anyone may write to me at any time if proof is desired.
I suppose you were insulted by the fact that I have put all neurological disorders on an even keel (sp?) Specifically, intellectual disorders with other mental disorders, or, MR with MI. Your protests represent the actual outrage, especially with your apparent denial of comparable suffering to MI.
Spewing death wishes in a public forum does not conform to the rules of polite society.
All disorders of the brain are neurological in cause and function. They are not faults of the sufferers, so there is no reason for embarrassment or shame. That any stigma is still attached to any of them is cause instead for the embarrassment and shame for members of a culture that places more importance on watching the Superbowl than on educating itself and thus taking some of its beliefs out of the Dark Ages.
I have noticed that comments such as yours fit a well known pattern. Are you, as your writing suggests, a troll employed by the right wing? Or were you just having a bad day? In any case, I hope you feel better soon.
