Who Runs Gov

Lou Dobbs Can Win Presidency, Says Pat Buchanan’s Campaign Manager

We now have at least one political consultant who says Lou Dobbs can win the presidency, but look who it is:

“I would assume he’s going independent, since he’s made a very strong case that that’s where he is,” said Bay Buchanan, who ran Pat Buchanan’s 2000 campaign for president as the Reform Party’s candidate. “There’s enormous movement out there, I think more so than when Pat ran. I think they’ve really given up on Republicans, they’ve given up on Democrats; so he would be stepping into something where a path had been laid.”

Buchanan added: “I think he can win.”

Pat Buchanan’s 2000 performance, of course, doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in Bay Buchanan’s powers of political prognostication. But put that aside.

As I noted here yesterday, consultants looking to enrich themselves off of Dobbs ego, er, presidential run will be lining up to tell Dobbs: Yes You Can! We now have our first consultant to do just that.

Given the similar world view espoused by both Dobbs and Pat Buchanan, she might actually have a shot at getting hired. Xenophobes for Dobbs!

Maybe he’ll pick Pat as his running mate!

This just gets better and better.

  2. amk | November 24th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

    “Yes, you can”. Nice. :)

“Xenophobes for Dobbs!” Nicer. Nailed it. Is it any wonder that the first one off the block was from the racist buchanan clan ?

  3. DJShay | November 24th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

How will he win over the Latinos, African Americans and youths? What’s his diversity outreach going to be? I hope he runs. It will be soooo entertaining.

  4. Ethan | November 24th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Come on. Palin. Dobbs. Too much fluff. Lots going on in policy world. Let’s have our fun at the expense of these idiots, but let’s stay focused on substance. Imho. Thx. :)

  6. Tena | November 24th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Ethan, my love, this is policy world. This is the opposition. This is the only other major political party in the country. This is the entire rest of Congress that isn’t us.

  7. Liam | November 24th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

    I agree.

We need to have threads devoted to serious issues, such as the rumor that President Obama is going to send 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. If he does that, he will then have made it his own war, and quagmire, and it will cost him a second term.

  8. Greg Sargent | November 24th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Liam, Ethan, there was a ton of stuff leading the roundup about precisely that.

  9. rukidding | November 24th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

“Pat Buchanan’s 2000 performance, of course, doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in Bay Buchanan’s powers of political prognostication. But put that aside.”

Greg it is hard to put that aside. BTW can you tell us exactly what % of the vote Buchanon received. Quite honestly I don’t remember much about him except as I recall he may have done well in N.H. which shocked everybody.

As far as the debate about substance…I’m torn between Ethan and Liam’s observations and Tena’s that as ludicrous as it might seem…these wackos are now the opposition.

If you saw the people interviewed online at the Palin book signings makes you wonder…there are some truly uneducated frightened and depressed people fueling an even more frightening movement.

    There dream administration…President Palin
    VP Glen Beck
    Secy of State: Lou Dobbs
    Secy of Defense: Liz Cheney
    PR Spokesperson: Sean Hannity

    The new dream team!!!

  10. lmsinca | November 24th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

I agree with Ethan and Liam, while it can be entertaining sometimes watching the shenanigans of the right and Dobbs, whatever he calls himself, I think it’s much more important to focus on what’s happening while the Dems actually have control. If we don’t fix some of this cr@p, I know he’s working on it, we may face substantial challenges in 2010 and 2012, whoever runs.

There’s an awful lot of frustration out in middle America and at some point it will be directed at the WH and Dems, whether justified or not. We need to focus on HCR, the economy and Afghanistan for now and continue to hightlight the Repubs failure on all these issues.

  11. rukidding | November 24th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Sorry..THEIR dream…I really do spell better than this…my fingers seem to outrace my brain…but at may age it’s a constant battle as to whether arthritis will ever catch up to senility and equalize things a bit.

  12. rukidding | November 24th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

@Liam….” If he does that, he will then have made it his own war, and quagmire, and it will cost him a second term.”

While I agree with your premise that he won’t deserve a second term…what exactly is the alternative? A primary challenge against a sitting President?

Worse still a vote for Repub..Romney, Pawlenty or Palin..or Indy Dobbs?

I absolutely agree with your position that sending more troops is beyond a HUGE mistake…but what can we do about it…that is the question?

  13. Benton | November 24th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

Frankly, I don’t know where ol’ purple-faced, corpulent LouLou is gonna fit in.

I know we make endless jokes about it, but I’m now convinced: Palin *will* run in 2012, and I suspect Beck — yes, Beck — will be her running mate.

Think I’m crazy? Perhaps. But note what steps into the political arena mental patient Becky’s already making, beginning with his rally and “Contract on America — 2009 version” slated for the DC Mall in August 2010. And watch his carefully choreographed steps going forward to position himself as a teabagger populist pol, as he lines up support form his brainless gaggle of useful idiots — er, I mean, fans….

  14. lmsinca | November 24th, 2009 at 12:40 pm

“there are some truly uneducated frightened and depressed people fueling an even more frightening movement”

ruk, this stereotype does not necessarily fit the profile of all the anti-Obama, anti-government movement. Unfortunately, I saw some people this past weekend I haven’t seen since Bush was in office and their contempt for Obama was palatable.

These are well-educated, mostly retired senior types, and while I was able to persuade them slightly with my HCR defense, it was a real uphill struggle. They all watch a lot of Fox and in particular O’Reilly so at least from this perspective the propaganda promoted by Fox and Friends is having some affect.

  15. Benton | November 24th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Regardless of what Obama does re Afghanistan, he WILL be serving a highly successful second term, after his highly successful first term. Primary him? Good luck with that!

Have you really so quickly forgotten that Obama always has the last laugh, that his detractors always get smoked in the end, and that betting against him is and always has been the very definition of a sucker’s bet?

Honestly, you guys can be such faithless, fair-weather, hand-wringing concern trolls some times!

Just be still, and wait to hear what the man *actually has to say* about Afghanistan before you get yourselves all worked and start running for the exits.

  16. Greg Sargent | November 24th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Sincere question: Why doesn’t a roundup leading with multiple items about Obama/Afghanistan count as a thread about Afghanistan?

  17. Benton | November 24th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

    It does, Greg. It does.

  18. Andy | November 24th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Seems like a long way off until 2012 to me. In 2001, pre-9/11, who were the front-runners for ‘04 Dem Prez Candidates?

  19. Liam | November 24th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

    Greg,

You have it bass ackwards. A roundup is a general catch all, and does not concentrate on any one topic, such as the rumored Afghanistan surge.

You dedicate threads to fluff, such as Bay At The Moon Buchanan, and you toss the topics, such as the looming surge mistake, into your catch all headlines, where they get lost in the shuffle.

  20. lmsinca | November 24th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

It does Greg, I just get tired of all the Palin stuff, seriously. To me she’s a reality star for now and the future will shake out as it does. You can post whatever you want obviously, it’s your site, and we all enjoy the conversations here, so good job.

  21. Tena | November 24th, 2009 at 01:01 pm

“They all watch a lot of Fox and in particular O’Reilly so at least from this perspective the propaganda promoted by Fox and Friends is having some affect.”

by the same token, amk, I talked to a couple of people last week I hadn’t seen in almost a year and they don’t understand what the complaining is about.

    They don’t watch Fox.

There isn’t anything you can do about Fox Viewers and the s*h*i*t they believe.

  22. Ethan | November 24th, 2009 at 01:05 pm

“Why doesn’t a roundup leading with multiple items about Obama/Afghanistan count as a thread about Afghanistan?”

Because part of why I come here is for your analysis and reporting. The round-ups are essentially your snarky take on other reporters’ takes on a variety of issues. Speaking for myself, it’s not that I don’t appreciate the round-ups, I do, but I agree with Liam in that I’d much rather read your in-depth reporting on substantive issues and have sincere discussions of those issues, rather than read snippets about substantive issues and devote both reporting man-hours and discussion space on topics that I see as nothing more than political contrivance (Palin book tour, Lou Dobbs 4 Prez, etc). Just my $.02….

  23. Tena | November 24th, 2009 at 01:05 pm

    Jesus Peasus –

Greg, I think you’re doing great, but I’m just me.

I may say s*c*r*e*w you guys I’m going home if I have to talk about the economy, the war, or another poll.

    ;)

Forget it Bay! Your party of cross burners and womb chasers aren’t going to inspire anyone more then Dems, minorities and specifically, Hispanics!

  25. Liam | November 24th, 2009 at 01:14 pm

    @Rukidding.

I am not talking about would be a better alternative, than President Obama for a second term. I am predicting that if he sends 34,000 more troops to Afghanistan, that will be the Albatross around his neck, that will defeat him in 2012.

I hope the rumor is wrong, because he will look ridiculous if he took all this time, before deciding to give the Generals what they wanted. He is starting to look like a man of half measures. What the hell was the point in taking all that time, just to pare back the request by a mere 6,000 troops.

Sending 34,000 Troops is validating the corruption and election fixing of Karzai. The President is rumored to be going to spell out, in his address to the nation, that if things do not improve rapidly, he will stop the flow of more Troops, and start to withdraw. He should be doing that now, because it is not going to improve. When it comes to Afghanistan, history is clear on that point, and The President is walking into a massive trap.

When things start to go bad, he will not be able to start to pull out, because that will make him look like he made a huge mistake escalating in the first place, after saying he wanted to take the time to make the right decision, and he will have to live with his decision, or he will look like he is weak, and giving in to defeat.

Once he gets further mired down in Afghanistan, no right wingers will vote for him, anyway. Both the moderates and progressive voters will become disenchanted with him, and enough of them will sit out the 2012 election to assure his defeat.

Afghanistan can not converted from a 14th century tribal culture, dominated by warlords and drug lords, by just sending 34,000 more troops. The place is a hellhole, and the sooner we accept that, and configure our strategy to just go after the real bad guys who have attacked us, and forget about the impossible dream of building Afghanistan into a modern cohesive nation, the better off we will be.

  26. Liam | November 24th, 2009 at 01:15 pm

    edit:

    can not be converted….

Some of us read this Brownstein piece this weekend but Obama is asking everyone, staff and Congress to read it now so it’s worth another mention.

“In their November 17 letter to Obama, the group of economists led by Dr. Alan Garber of Stanford University, identified four pillars of fiscally-responsible health care reform. They maintained that the bill needed to include a tax on high-end “Cadillac” insurance plans; to pursue “aggressive” tests of payment reforms that will “provide incentives for physicians and hospitals to focus on quality” and provide “care that is better coordinated”; and establish an independent Medicare commission that can continuously develop and implement “new efforts to improve quality and contain costs.” Finally, they said the Congressional Budget Office “must project the bill to be at least deficit neutral over the 10-year budget window and deficit reducing thereafter.”

CNN doesn’t get the credit it deserves for launching the careers of both right wing racist Lou Dobbs AND the right wing mad hatter Glenn Beck.

Speaking of CNN, this is a serious issue:

Imsinca – what a great article. No wonder the White House likes it:

“Gruber likes what he sees in the Reid proposal. Actually he likes it a lot.

“I’m sort of a known skeptic on this stuff,” Gruber told me. “My summary is it’s really hard to figure out how to bend the cost curve, but I can’t think of a thing to try that they didn’t try. They really make the best effort anyone has ever made. Everything is in here….I can’t think of anything I’d do that they are not doing in the bill. You couldn’t have done better than they are doing.”

  31. rukidding | November 24th, 2009 at 02:29 pm

@Imsinca…I don’t mean to imply ALL those who disagree with Obama are frightened and uneducated. Just that the majority of the Palinista/Beck crowd fit that mold. I think I divide the two groups into those who literally know very little about actual policy..such as the difference between socialized medicine versus single payer…the difference between socialism and communism…could not name more than a couple of countries in Africa or Scandanavia…and trust me Imsinca…I hate to plug Bill Maher…but even Jay Leno used to make fun of our country’s ignorance with his man on the street interviews. There is a LOT of ignorance in the country and Palin and Beck are making a ton of money from that ignorance. I don’t mind them making the money but when they foment these ignorant crowds into lynch mobs…it makes me nervous.

I do understand your point about the folks with some intellgence objecting. Basically when folks approach arguing ISSUES I listen respectfully whether I agree or not…when they start with patriotism..”my America” “socialism” “government takeover” I write them off as uneducated boobs!

  32. Gasman | November 24th, 2009 at 04:27 pm

Dobbs will never make out of the GOP primaries. He won’t draw the teabagger crowd, as he is probably seen as being WAY too intellectual for them. He uses complete sentences, you know. He also is fixates on too few insane conspiracy theories. His paranoia is restricted primarily to illegal immigration and the birthers. Even Dobbs isn’t goofy enough for the smorgasbord of stupid that characterizes the teabaggers.

Dobbs won’t pull in the votes that Fred Thompson got. Dobbs is seriously deluded if he thinks that he has any chance at all.

However, I hope that he ignores my assessment and runs. I’d even send in a $10 contribution if it would help him jump in the race. It would be worth that much in comedy entertainment value alone.
