Joe Lieberman May Hold Hearings On Obama’s “Czar” Problem

Hey, so guess who is mulling new legislation to solve the alleged problem of Obama’s “czars”? Joe Lieberman!

He may even hold hearings on the czars, as the chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Since this will confer legitimacy on an attack that has mostly emanated from Glenn Beck and the hothouse right, it could prompt an “I told you so” chorus from those who argued that Lieberman should be stripped of his committee slots.

Leslie Phillips, a spokesperson for Lieberman’s committee, confirms by email that Lieberman’s legislation is “in the early conceptual stage.” She also said a hearing is in the works, with its schedule up the air until the committee can nail down witnesses.

Lieberman signaled his intentions last week, but his comments passed unnoticed, and they’re newly relevant in light of the fact that Russ Feingold drew new attention to the issue by launching hearings yesterday.

In fairness, we don’t know what Lieberman’s goals are; his spokesperson declined to clarify. Still, the fact that Lieberman is mulling hearings at all is likely to provoke objections. Yesterday, the White House made a strong case to Feingold that the czar criticism has zero merit, and his hearing yesterday ended up supporting that assessment.

Yet Lieberman may be forging ahead with hearings of his own. Courage!

    Frakking Russ Feingold –

This is such a waste of our time and money – goddamn. Why is Lieberman jumping on it now?

Feingold better never send me another fund raising email.

Can’t wait for Liberman to get smackdown the same why those trying to remove Rangel got smacked down today. Also, can’t wait for Deputy Droop Along to get kicked out of office. He’s a useless tool. Perhaps Joe should spend more time with Bill Kristol’s father. I know that he died a couple of weeks ago. What’s your point?

  3. Liam | October 7th, 2009 at 05:26 pm

If Lieberman follows through with this, then President Obama will have no one to blame but himself. The Senate Democrats were going to take away Lieberman’s chair position, because he campaigned for John McCain, and President Obama put a stop to them doing it. He may live to regret that he did not let them remove the snake’s fangs.

  4. Kris | October 7th, 2009 at 05:37 pm

He’s with us on everything but the war.

    Oh wait…

  5. roxsteady | October 7th, 2009 at 05:37 pm

You’re so right Liam! He’ll have no one to blame but himself. He’d better stop being a doormat for these duplicitous idiots. I’m curious to see if the president is going to corner this dick and force him to vcte for his health care bill. Quid Pro Quo Joe Joe!

  6. Tena | October 7th, 2009 at 05:38 pm

Five constitutional scholars testified in Feingold’s hearing that this is much ado over absolutely nothing.

I guess they are all going to line up to get shot down im turn – SMH

It’s like FINALLY Joe Lieberman has a chance for political payback after Obama screwed him into that committee chairmanship. I feel so ******* happy for Joe!

“It’s like FINALLY Joe Lieberman has a chance for political payback after Obama screwed him into that committee chairmanship. ”

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

    that’s a fact.

  9. mrspeel | October 7th, 2009 at 05:52 pm

If Feingold has already had hearings on the subject, and was told there is nothing legally wrong with having “czars”, why would Lieberman need to hold another hearing? Is it because he didn’t like the outcome of Feingold’s so he’ll just keep going until he finds the answers HE wants?

As Tena said, it’s a waste of our time and money. We have enough REAL problems for them to deal with. Tell Congress that enough is enough and stop spending our money on frivolous hearings!

The bile that regularly emanates from allegedly tolerant progressives is mindboggling. lmsinca declares her “hate” for a whole list of people she’s never met and knows next to nothing about (including yours truly!). Tena follows suit. And now roxsteady casually suggests that Joe Lieberman should die. The 9/12ers have nothing on you guys when it come to hate.

I said this before in another context, but Greg, how proud you must be of the following that you have engendered here.

Continuing to nurse a viper to your bosom, after he has spent the previous year sinking his fangs into to you, is not my notion of doing a good deed.

We’d all like to see old Joe replaced. But, we’ll have to wait. In the meantime, Joe is what he is. His votes are needed by the Democrats on healthcare, the next Supreme Court nominee, and probably a bunch of other stuff. I live in Connecticut. Joe was a slime when he ran against Weicker and beat him using reprehensible ads. We lost a good senator and got him.

Where was GI JOE during the Bush Administration, asking for a hearing of all the Bush Czars, which numbered more than The Obama Administration?

    Talk about a HYPOCRITE!!

Well, personally I’m glad five constitutional scholars testified the way they did. Now, will the whackjobs actually listen and will Russ shut the damn thing down?

  17. Pat | October 7th, 2009 at 06:44 pm

Joe just do it. Leave the party go to the GOP if they will have you. You do the Democratic Party no good and indeed bring it harm. Go and don’t look back.

“I said this before in another context, but Greg, how proud you must be of the following that you have engendered here.”

O spare me the fake outrage.

It was a witty comment but you can’t tell the difference because the right doesn’t do wit, irony or decent humor.

  19. Bob | October 7th, 2009 at 06:52 pm

    Gee…Why didn’t the GOP complain when republican administrations were appointing “czars”…Oh, I forgot…Its “different” if you’re a republcan…..

  20. Uwaine | October 7th, 2009 at 06:54 pm

This is the same gentleman who would NOT hold hearing on the mishandling of Katrina by the previous administration. What a swell guy (/sarcasm).

O spare me the fake outrage.

Huh? There’s no outrage, either fake or real. It was simply a pointed observation.

…the right doesn’t do wit, irony or decent humor.

Well you have me there…the left does irony all the time. Unintentional, of course, but irony nonetheless.

S@ew Russ Feingold for starting it, too.

Tena, a veritable fount of (unintended) irony.

I’d just like to know where anyone got the notion that progressives should be tolerant of such a snake as LLLLLIEBERMAN.

It was my understanding that the word Czar came from another presidential administration, an not this one? If that is true, just how far back is joe willing to go in our History on his investigation into the Czar word/It use/What administration used it first, an what if any Prsident used it in a way that made it inlegal? I have a lot of questions for old joe there, Ha, Ha. He should be careful he don’t SCR## his own party fromt the past!

  35. Scott C. | October 7th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Try not to be so emotional, Tena. More reason, less emotion. That’s the ticket.

    “Alberta Treadway | October 7th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

It was my understanding that the word Czar ”

It actually goes back a long way. Nixon is the president most people think started it, with the Drug Czar, but I think it goes back further. I have to find this again but I thought I read that Theodore Roosevelt had some kind of czar. But don’t quote me.

  37. Tena | October 7th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

Scott C – go frak yourself. That’s the ticket.

time for this old man to be gone- Lieberman is a danger to the party and to the president (always has been)- time to grow a pair

  39. Erin | October 8th, 2009 at 04:03 am

    Lieberman’s office: (202) 224-4041
    Reid’s office: 202-224-3542

It’s time we stop sitting back quietly. Get some oil on that wheel people!!!

  40. Samanatha | October 8th, 2009 at 09:51 am

History: The first modern-era American “czar” was Energy Czar John Love, appointed by President Nixon in 1973 during the gas crisis, followed by other energy czars appointed by presidents Ford and Carter. Yet, while the appointment of an energy czar consoled some people sitting in gas lines, the fundamental cause of the energy shortages — federal price controls and other restrictions — were kept in place. Congress finally enacted a law in 1982 that created the drug czar title.

It is a waste of taxpayer’s time and money and an effort to continue to falsely criticize the President. Besides Lieberman should’ve been ousted long time ago!!!!

  41. Kathy | October 8th, 2009 at 09:54 am

Joe can’t wait for the next election to vote against you. Out you’ve got to go.

  42. Wuud52 | October 8th, 2009 at 09:56 am

So, Lieberman looked at Bush’s Czars for 8 years and had nothing to say? Then, Obama gets the same type of Czars and it is a problem for Lieberman? This is so inconsistent that it is really a joke. Kick him out, strip him of everything.

  43. Bill in Michigan | October 8th, 2009 at 10:33 am

It’s shame that we need Lieberman’s vote to stop a filibuster on health care

  44. EJ | October 8th, 2009 at 10:42 am

It would be very interesting if the Democratic primary challenger in Colorado wins the primary and gets elected and then goes after Czars. His last name is Romanoff. This whole story is once again a distraction from solving the real problems.

  45. You Are Wrong | October 9th, 2009 at 03:25 am

If all these Czars were really doing a good job, and were clean, upstanding people. Then there would be no problem with certain advisers (Czars). But that is not the case here. These Czars were picked by Obama and gang to advance Obama’s hidden agenda to destroy the American way of life. When one of these Czars gets in hot water and get axed, then another stands ready to take their place and promote the same agenda. If the rubber-stamp Congress would like to do a service to US Citizens, then they would get off their duffs and demand an immediate, very public background check of all these Czars.

Hey everyone remember the TTC collector was caught napping? Well yesterday a second TTC driver, who was already 15 minutes late took his ‘normal’ unscheduled 7 minuet ‘doughnut break’. He left the passengers sitting in the bus. The dude even threatened the passenger who confronted him! Check it out, (and digg it to make it viral) -
