Who Runs Gov

The Plum LineGreg Sargent's blog

Happy Hour Open Thread

* I noted below that Congressional Republicans would be escalating their national security attacks on Obama, and Sam Stein has the latest salvo: A video by Senate Republicans about Obama and Guantanamo Bay…

* A new CNN poll finds that 57% oppose a Congressional investigation into the Bush officials who authorized torture. This is a narrow way to poll the question, though.

The better way is to poll it broadly: Offer respondents a choice between a criminal probe, a non-criminal one, or neither, and ask whether folks favor an overall look into what happened, not necessarily one focused only on the torture architects. Done that way, the results are very different.

* Chris Cillizza says the White House doesn’t want a torture probe because it’s bad politics. One hopes the White House — sorry, the Attorney General — will also think about the law.

* Speaking of torture, don’t miss our big new profile of torture memo author Jay Bybee.

* Glenn Thrush argues that Eric Cantor was actually pushing back (albeit gently) against Rush Limbaugh, not capitulating to him.

* The latest Research 2000 poll for Daily Kos finds that substantially more Dems than Repblicans would disapprove of their state if it left the Union.

* Drawing on that polling, Steve Benen draws up a useful chart on secession attitudes by region.

The New York Times goes on the offensive to defend its image in the blogosphere and elsewhere. I must say that the paper, to its credit, has been very responsive of late, with journalists like Richard Stevenson, Douglas Jehl, Peter Baker and others regularly answering my questions, no matter how annoying.

* TPM tracks the whispering campaign against potential SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

Update: RNC chair Michael Steele is in fact now condemning the Maine gay marriage decision.

… substantially more Dems than Republicans would disapprove of their state if it left the Union.

So much for patriotic Republicans wrapping themselves in the American flag.  Guess there’s gonna be a run on state flags.  Hmmm… maybe there’s an investment opportunity there!

Jzap, if anyone could exploit this one, it’s you. :)

Greg:  Naw, my investing track-record is abysmal.  To paraphrase mark Twain, I have seldom recognized an opportunity until it had ceased to be one :-)

Re NY Times…“One of the best ways for people to know about The Times and to know our journalism is to know our reporters.”
Damned good idea. Every minute taken up by a reporter is a minute that an AEI representative or Pentagon propagandist is sitting in a bar with someone not his wife.
    .
Speaking of which, the Pentagon IG’s take back on the faulty (I’ll say!) Pentagon report on military analysts being organized to forward pro-war propaganda on the networks is a story that missed the cut here today but it’s a story I think we ought to keep burning bright for a number of reasons…
    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/06/us/06generals.html?_r=1&ref=fpjr2
As TPM noted today, one reason the initial report was devoid of substance (or truth or justice) was that the Pentagon officials who engineered the program refused to talk. My personal consideration is that this is as important a matter as the torture memos.

May I toss this in? From a reader at Andrew Sullivan’s blog. I didn’t know this important bit of information on the legal issue…
    .
“There is a very simple reason why we have to pretend that Israel does not possess nuclear weapons- the Non Proliferation Treaty. Under the treaty and US law, a non-signatory to the treaty (such as Israel) who acquires nuclear weapons is prohibited from receiving any foreign aid or military aid (the last estimates I saw were that Israel receives about a quarter of the US’s entire foreign aid budget, and half of our foreign military aid budget). So there you go. ” http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/05/israels-nuclear-closet-ctd.html

I swear man if some Democrat doesn’t come forward soon to volunteer to take GITMO detainees I don’t know what I am going to do. The GOP is scared of their own frikkin shadow and someone needs to call them on it.
    .
How full of sh*t is Glenn Rush? If Eric Cantor’s performance on Morning Joe wasn’t an example of a total capitulation to Rush I don’t know what is. Make no mistake, Cantor and Jeb Bush had described it is as going around and listening before RushBo got involved.

  7. Bernie Latham | May 6th, 2009 at 08:22 pm

An irony in this, sg, is that a hero’s mantle awaits the (conservative or Republican) individual who finally takes Rush down, if that’s done for the right reasons.

Ed Kilgore, referencing Nate Silver, writes on the minimal political consequences arising from SC nominees…
“As he is wont, Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com has done exhaustive research on the impact of both successful and unsuccessful Supreme Court appointments on the approval ratings of presidents going all the way back to Eisenhower, and concluded there’s not much evidence such appointments pose a major political risk.”http://www.thedemocraticstrategist.org/

Reincarnate Twain in this period and toss him into a female body…
    .
“But surely, when it comes to combating teen pregnancy, the Palin family has done enough damage already. What worse message could you send to teenage girls than the one they delivered at the Republican convention: If your handsome but somewhat thuglike boyfriend gets you with child, he will clean up nicely, propose marriage, and show up at an important family event wearing a suit and holding your hand. At which point you will get a standing ovation.” – Gail Collins

  10. Reaganite Republican Resistance | May 7th, 2009 at 09:15 am

Yet another attempt at baiting fake conflicts on the right >yawn< in order to divert attention from Obama’s habitual dishonesty, shocking disregard for the law, constitution, and/or ethics… and general, all-round incompetency.

Team Obama, the DNC, and their MSM sycophants have been employing despicable Alinsky-esque divide-and-conquer and character assassination techniques for months now… manufacturing synthetic “fights” like Rush vs. Steele, plus ceaseless ridicule of Jindal, Palin, even shameful distortion of the legacy of Ronald Reagan. Clearly, the strategy is to eliminate GOP rallying points and philosophical framework for 2010/12 and create the image of a party in disarray.

And it’s not difficult to see why the Democrats might prefer to banter playfully about made-up GOP “scandals” and irrelevancies like Meghan McCain’s latest drivel than debate Obama’s ongoing destruction of the country.

When their pork-n-welfare spending orgy fails to create any real economic gains -but stokes vicious inflation and crashes the dollar instead- the Democrats face a bloodbath in 2010.

    And by 2012?

LOL, the GOP could take 40 states running Gilbert Gottfried.

Terminator franchise is what got me interested in the movies in the first place. The first was a suspenseful cyberpunk thriller, and the second became my favorite movie of all time. The third fell short of intelligence but still solid nonetheless, and the TV series was a good addition to the franchise. Nearing the end of May, the fourth and latest film addition of the beloved sci-fi franchise will open, and viewers are in for a sheer summer spectacle.

    Hello everyone!

I’m really liking the helpfulness of this wonderful community here and I was hoping that you could provide some feedback for me.
I created a website that aims to enable students to collaborate their notes with each other and hopefully this would enhance their learning and help them become better doctors, pharmacists, engineers and etc.
Right now, the site is done the beta, but I still feel that it can be improved upon. So, I was wondering if you could provide suggestions and constructive feedback on how to improve the site. I feel that this would really help students succeed.

The site is here: Share notes

    Thanks again everyone

Good day everyone. I’m new here, so to begin with a great warm howdy to you. I will be forthright and tell you that my intro is not fully un-selfserving ;oD. I’m doing some info seeking for a PR course I am on and part of my current paper term coursework (trying to jump the queue) is about suppressed effects of site design on an unrelated viewers. So, I was thinking off the wall and discovered this site. I was hoping, would anyone would like to play along?

If you would, could you surf this webpage for me. It’s about all inclusive holidays and cheap package deals, importantly though, if you are planning a holiday or have been on holiday recently, you will not be able to help me out with some research, as the demographic I need to surf this site have to be completely detached from and to the subject matter. But thank you for trying to helping me:OD Before going further to read, please follow on the link as I don’t want to cloud your answers before continue.

Ok, now you have viewed at the page can you tell me the following:

Did you start to think about your holiday plans? The last time you went on vacation? Did any kind of destination appear into your head when viewing the website, if so, have you been to that place previously? Did the site design have any effect on you, either good, neutral or unpleasant? How often do you go on vacation?

That’s all folks I would sure like as many replies as possible and I have to literally arrange thousands of replies for this research, not an unhard task! I appreciate those who answer, I appreciate it, and unfortunately there is no present, I’ll definitely buy you a alcoholic beverage of your choice….uhhh… maybe not hee hee

Your best bet is to turn to Big Titty Amateurs, which shows off all of the fresh faced harlots that are packing quite a rack. These amateurs might be new to the porn scene, but they certainly aren’t new to showing off those massive melons that bounce around with every single step that they take.

I’m trying to log onto my student portal for college. I keep getting an error that says “Server Busy – please try again later”. I guess that means that too many people are trying to log on right now….. It’s really annoying because I have to log on to access some of my classwork. Is there any tricks to get around this error?

I recently needed an insurance policy and did not have hours to waste searching on the internet for the cheapest quote. So, I tried out a online insurance quote engine that works to compare quotes of multiple insurance agents across the nation.

    Here was my experience:

On 5InsuranceRates.com they state it is really important to compare and contrast insurance quotes before to signing up with a policy.

Overall, I winded up save a few hundred dollars by using this free service. Has anybody had a similar experience with an online insurance quote search engine?

    Here’s the service I used:
