CNN And MSNBC To Carry Cheney’s Big National Security Speech Live

Looks like Dick Cheney’s big national security speech at the American Enterprise Institute tomorrow is going to get wall-to-wall cable coverage — giving a major assist to those who hope that his speech will be seen as “dueling” with the one that Obama is planning to give on the same topic tomorrow.

Both CNN and MSNBC will be carrying Cheney’s speech live tomorrow, in addition to carrying Obama’s, spokespeople for both networks confirm to me, barring the intrusion of some major news event. Fox News will certainly be all over the Cheney speech tomorrow — a major cataclysm couldn’t tear them away from such a big moment. So that means roadblocked cable coverage for Cheney.

Obama is set to deliver his big speech on national security at 10 A.M. Cheney’s is set to follow at 10:45. Politico framed the story of tomorrow’s speeches in advance in a piece called: “Barack Obama, Dick Cheney plan dueling speeches.”

This, naturally, raised some hackles on the left, where people pointed out that Obama is the Commander in Chief, meaning his national security views have real-world significance, while Dick Cheney is a private citizen who only has his reputation at stake.

In other words, goes this argument, their speeches will only be “dueling” if folks in the media make the decision to present them that way. Republicans, meanwhile, hope that coverage does proceed along these lines, helping to elevate Cheney and taking down Obama a peg or two.

Looks like the cable nets have already made the call.

Talk about EPIC FAIL. But the thing about it is Dick Cheney is going to catch hell trying to follow President Obama and I can’t see anybody who is in the middle watching this play out tomorrow and then coming down on Cheney’s side.

  2. mike from Arlington | May 20th, 2009 at 03:30 pm

Should be a good day. I’m guessing Obama will in usual form dismantle Dicky’s arguments one by one, making trying to argue for them shameful.
    .
When was the last time someone beat Obama on a speech?

  3. Bob | May 20th, 2009 at 03:36 pm

I don’t know sgw – right now, the Senate is siding with Cheney & against theirr President on Gitmo.

  4. sgwhiteinfla | May 20th, 2009 at 03:39 pm

    Bob
    .
Not everyone and they aren’t exactly siding with Cheney. What they asked for was a plan and supposedly that’s partly what Obama is going to give them tomorrow.

  5. kgb999 | May 20th, 2009 at 03:41 pm

Wonder if Cheney will be using a pleasing green backdrop?

  6. DJShay | May 20th, 2009 at 03:44 pm

Why couldn’t Obama follow Cheney? Maybe he should be late tomorrow.

  7. mike from Arlington | May 20th, 2009 at 03:45 pm

Maybe Obama will take this moment to announce the U.S. DOJ has been given the green light to use all their authority and power to go after those who devised the torture program and send the message to Dick and the rest of the Pro-torture people the U.S. does not and will not torture, ever again.

  8. Greg Sargent | May 20th, 2009 at 04:23 pm

Mike — that would certainly make news.

  9. raaa | May 20th, 2009 at 05:05 pm

You have got to be kidding. Does everyone know that the United States of America under Dick Cheney was instituting a policy of torture that is equivilent or worse than anyone in human history?

We used modern medicine, the most advanced medicine in history, to keep these men alive so these mastubatory sadistic evil torture practices could continue the next day.

The argument Cheney and his minions made was that we torture our own troops in “SERE” training. That’s it. That’s the argument.

So, let me make this perfectly simple for your folks. The debate does not exist because the argument doesn’t exist.

    In “SERE” training:

    1) Do we forcefully SHOVE feeding tubes down troops nose into their stomach with no Anasthesia, and then rip them out as hard as they can so the prisoner passes out from indescribable pain?

    No.

    2) Waterboarding was invented in medieval times. The victim suffers permanent brain damage. Permananet psychological damage. Broken bones. Lung damage. Liver damage. It goes on for 20-minutes or more.

Do you know how long our big brave troops last during “SERE” training?

How long — answer the question dumb ***. 14 SECONDS on average.

With modern doctors and psychologists observing and monitoring the victim, these prisoners are kept artifically alive to endure it hundreds of times. Do you have any idea how sick this makes or medical establishment?

Do you realize even the CIA agents said this was torture but Dick Cheney told them to continue?

3)…. what about the other torture methods we used? Breaking noses repeatedly. Beating people to near death for having an extra cup in their cell. Flushing their heads in the toilet again and again and again… Smearing **** from other prisoners on their faces again and again.

And by the way, a few years back one of our brave troops in “SERE” training tried the beating thing from our THUG SQUADS. He was told to cry out “red” to stop them when he had enough. They beat him so bad he has permanent brain damage and sued Dick Cheney. Remember? Hey war hawks… remember that one????? (*f-ing coward basards!)

My 3rd point can go on for page after page… but even if we stop here, it’s torture. It’s monsterous. And with the blessing of psychologists, lawyers and doctors, it’s the worst we’ve ever been as humans. Worse than the Nazis.

Now, you’re telling me this monster Dick Cheney is going to debate our sitting president. (The one whose Boy Karl Rove stole 6 million votes from and was going to electronically flip if that judge in Ohio didn’t drag his now murdered buddy Mike Connell the computer hack that flipped elections for Cheney and Rove since 2000…. THAT MONSTER????

Folks if you serious support Dick Cheney you WORSE MUCH WORSE than the Germans in 1930’s who allowed Hitler to retain power. You are so much worse and your God is very very very mad at you, ********.

Arrest Cheney. UN, please step in if Obama is too weak to follow the Constitution. ARREST HIM NOW.

  10. Bernie Latham | May 20th, 2009 at 05:14 pm

I think, unfortunately, the GOP strategists are doing something effective here. Cheney’s move into the spotlight is as a leader which, as we all know, the GOP has been desperately lacking. I understand that Cheney’s personal polling is very lousy but I expect it is going to change. The only really functioning and media-savvy sector of the party are the Bush people and they’ve moved into the vacuum. Not dumb people. What degree of danger they actually represent at this point, I’m not sure, but it isn’t nuttin. The increasing media coverage of them is a clear demonstration of their skills as media manipulators.

  11. sbj | May 20th, 2009 at 05:15 pm

Didn’t Obama schedule his speech as a counter to Cheney AFTER Cheney’s speech had been on the schedule for three weeks? Isn’t it Obama himself who is setting this up as a duel?

  12. Greg Sargent | May 20th, 2009 at 05:17 pm

Berine, I agree that Dems are underestimating the degree to which this could work for Republicans. And SBJ, who cares who went first? That’s sandbox stuff.

  13. sbj | May 20th, 2009 at 05:19 pm

Greg – hi! I care who scheduled what as a response to who because it tells me something about who is winning the debate. You can hardly blame the ‘media’ for setting this up as a duel when that’s what the Obama administration practically asked for.

  14. jasperjava | May 20th, 2009 at 05:22 pm

This brings to mind the night when Obama secured the nomination, gave a soaring victory speech in Iowa, and was followed by John McCain awkwardly grinning in front of a green screen. The contrast between the steady, commanding Obama and the snarling, grasping, desperate Cheney will be just as striking.

  15. sbj | May 20th, 2009 at 05:26 pm

Looks as if the commentors here (sgwhite, mike, jasperjava) don’t even need to watch either of the speeches to know who is going to “win.” If y’all could fill me in on the Lakers/Nuggets series I’d really appreciate it.

  16. Greg Sargent | May 20th, 2009 at 05:38 pm

sbj, as I said above, I think Dems are being too sanguine if they discount the possibility that the Cheney attacks are having some effect.

  17. sbj | May 20th, 2009 at 05:52 pm

I’ll have to look “sanguine” up but I don’t think Cheney is further hurting the already-injured Republican party. I’m sure Obama has scheduled this as a response to his own party and the whole Gitmo funding debacle but it would be naive to believe that Cheney’s attacks haven’t had at least something to do with the timing.

Am I the only one here who finds Cheney to be entertaining? Just think of the jokes on Late Nite TV tomorrow . . .

  18. sbj | May 20th, 2009 at 05:55 pm

Come to think of it – I’ll be looking for Cheney to crack a few Rodney Dangerfield-type one liners at Obama’s expense tomorrow. Perhaps this will be a turning point and the late nite comics will finally feel free to offer up some pokes at Obama?

  19. a giant slor | May 20th, 2009 at 05:56 pm

What the hell? Why is anyone but FOX covering this? Who in their right mind cares what Cheney thinks about national security? He made our country less safe by invading Iraq, inflaming Islamist furor worldwide and enabling terrorists to undergo an elite training program in an actual warzone. All while the Taliban and Al-Quaeda regrouped and gained power in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Then he aggressively promoted imprisoning suspected militants indefinitely and without charge, all the while torturing, humiliating, and occasionally killing them.

Again, who cares what Cheney thinks about national defense? Instead of speaking before a rapt audience, he ought to be speaking before a judge in a war crimes tribunal.

  20. Mark @ News Corpse | May 20th, 2009 at 06:10 pm

OK – So CNN and MSNBC (and probably Fox) are carrying the Cheney speech. Who is carrying the Obama speech?

Are we just assuming that all three nets will carry Obama? And what if they overlap? I’m going on record now to predict that if Obama’s speech extends into the time Cheney plans to begin, Fox will interrupt Obama and go live to Cheney.

  21. John | May 20th, 2009 at 06:24 pm

“”Not everyone and they aren’t exactly siding with Cheney…”"

The Senate voted down funding to close Gitmo by 90-6. That sums up just about “everyone”.

This is what happens when leftist anger and ideology is mistaken for a political platform. The cold, stark reality of the real world eventually finds its way.

No Democratic senator facing re-election in the next cycle (or 2012 for that matter) wants to be on record as having supported closing Gitmo without ensuring that they won’t be “housed” on US soil.

This is a losing issue for the progressive and bitter fringe of the Democratic party. It doesn’t play well to people who actually want a reality-based solution to this issue rather than one rooted in Bush/Cheney hatred.

    Get over it already.

  22. Baldrick | May 20th, 2009 at 06:35 pm

I don’t see what the big deal is. After all, Al Gore’s 2003 stemwinder against the Iraq war was also broadcast on multiple cable networks.

    Oh, wait…

  23. Bernie Latham | May 20th, 2009 at 07:31 pm

a giant slor – “Why is anyone but Fox covering this?”
Ratings. Conflict between “newsworthy” figures (like *** or plane crashes or trapped puppies) pulls in viewers.
    .
Baldrick – Snark is fine but analogizing these disparate situations is merely intellectually lazy. If, two or three years up the road Obama decides to launch a war with Azerbaijan on the theory it is somehow an imminent threat to the US, one would hope that a former VP would object. Cheney, by way of contrast, began open and vocal criticisms of the Obama presidency two weeks in and has repeated that in multiple venues since. There’s no precedent in US history that I know of which matches or comes close to matching Cheney’s behavior. You could, I suppose, try to make an argument re what Cheney is doing but getting your history this wrong ought to be avoided if you want anyone to take you seriously.

  24. Barry da man Obamacan | May 20th, 2009 at 09:44 pm

Richard Cheney has already beat Obama like a steel drum. Consider Gitmo, the photos, etc. etc. He has been schooling Obama.

  25. AllButCertain | May 20th, 2009 at 09:58 pm

Bernie, I think that’s an astute comment about the Bush media manipulators being at work. They have the old habits of both the MSM and the Dems on their side. Over time that may change, but at the moment it’s a little concerning.

  26. lucid1 | May 21st, 2009 at 12:29 am

dickhead cheney is laying bs ground work for the next staged 911.so he and is loser pack can regain control.to continue the looting of americans future…with the help of that talking peez ofs*it flushlimpdick…thet just may be able to pull another one on the gullable american tard’s who happen to love their country but are too stupid to see the puppet show…because they are meaningless puppets in the show and don’t know it.

  27. apetra | May 21st, 2009 at 12:39 am

Don’t diminish Dick Cheney. He is the immediate former Vice President of the United States, an architect of the defence of the U.S. and its interests that kept this country safe since 9/11. He had a sterling Congressional career spanning two decades. He is arguably much more qualified than Barack Obama to address issues of national security, who has no significant experience in the matter. The voice of experience vs. an out of his element, uninformed commander in chief with a number of bizarre views only recently on view to the American people. Should be interesting.

  28. lucid1 | May 21st, 2009 at 12:49 am

Barry de man at 9:44pm… it appears the steel drum DICK is beating is your empty head…and you love it!!! oooh white power, fear, loathing, cowardice … wake up man – i know it’s against republican doctrine to think for yourself …. but it’s ok – try it… do it when you are punching the clown dreaming of a rightwing circle jerk with your theiving fascist heroes. if you don’t know you’re being played … you aren’t even in the game! you could easily be mistaken for an american “threat” and waterboarded by your own heroes…wouldn’t that be white power justice? ha ha hell yeah it would.

  29. lucid1 | May 21st, 2009 at 12:53 am

apetra are you having his baby too? the man is a slime ball peez of krap that tortures people … maybe not your peeps -so you are kool wid it… it could be you next moron … if it’s ok to torture in the name of safety … why not torture americans too? pathetic…ignorance isn’t always bliss….sometimes it is just plain ignorance.

  30. lucid1 | May 21st, 2009 at 12:56 am

i don’t have to diminish little dick. everytime that jackass opens his pie hole he re iterates what a pathetic war profiteering peez of krap he is. anyone who condones torture should try it. and not the namby pamby way our troops try it … i mean try a few days of it … then talk all bad and sh*t. condoning torture doesn’t make you a patriot…it makes you as bad as the losers who do it.

  31. lucid1 | May 21st, 2009 at 01:02 am

news flash apetra … dick was part of 911 DUH …do you realize how much money he and his ******* theifing coward friends made off your gullabilty and fear? o save me from terrorist…pah leeze. terrorist – get a grip on it man – follow the money! coincidence? only for the gullable ignorant flag waving ask no question patriotbots … stayed tuned to channel dick for what to say and think next… oh well … 43 million years ago i was where you are so i understand … i just hate it for you.

  32. lucid1 | May 21st, 2009 at 01:10 am

Obama flipped flopped the photos etc etc…Q. Why? A. do you want to be the next JFK Barry? then don’t push it. Obama can’t do anything even if he wanted. dick tortures innocent people (some were innocent – that fact has already been established) do you think he cares about you cuz you are ignorant enough to carry his flag for him? no he laughs at you cuz he owns your arse AND you haven’t a clue! Obama would have to disappear – from the cia (owned by bush’s) – they would easily find him and blow him away … why do you think he changed his mind about it? threats pure and simple… there’s your heroes…zeros

  33. H. Diaz | May 21st, 2009 at 05:49 am

Mike from Arlington; in response to your comment: ‘When was the last time someone beat Obama on a speech?’
That depends. Will Obama bring his teleprompter? What if he has a teleprompter malfunction? After all he does sound like a stuttering idiot (no offense to idiots) without it…

  34. Jalapeno | May 21st, 2009 at 06:40 am

Obama make a speach with out his teleprompter? Now that what I would like to see lol.Why is it that every one thinks we only have 2 choices? Seems like everyone thinks if you critisize obama that means you think george w. was great.Heres the truth, most politicians are corrupt and oh yes that does include the savoir himself mr obama and no I do not think GWB was/is any better.

  35. Doug | May 21st, 2009 at 06:45 am

    hello

  36. Doug | May 21st, 2009 at 06:54 am

Hopefully, Americans are starting to see through President Obama’s polished speeches, and are beginning to realize that we really do want his policies to fail. He has most certainly made this country less safe since taking office, and continues to do so. Closing Gitmo is a horrible idea!! Do you want one of these terrorists residing in your state?? No more “War on Terror”, whats that all about?? Apologizing to other countries for America’s past behaviors? Talking with Iran? Please, if only Dick Cheney were our President!! Wake up people!! Universal healthcare? Cap & trade? Cafe standards? What more proof do you need?

  37. gonzone | May 21st, 2009 at 08:46 am

So I happened to notice that FAUX News was not included in the list. Are we to assume an automatic coverage there? :-)

Seems the GOP get President Cheney to lead them and Leader Rush to whip them. You go GOP buffoons! This will turn out well.

  38. MUBULLDOG | May 21st, 2009 at 10:35 am

BO has been backed in to the corner because he had no idea what he was going to do with the detainees. The United States has been safe because of the couragous stance Bush & Chaney took. The pure **** that BO and his kooky left ingrates has been spewed about so called torture techniques has done nothing but weeken this great country and its citizens. Slowly but surely the public is learning what this guy is all about and it aint pretty.

  39. Mike | May 21st, 2009 at 11:04 am

Some tortures are ok. Hold terrorists without ever trying them. Raise taxes on anything he doesn’t personally like. George W? Nope, these are straight from BO’s office in the past week. What was his slogan? More of the same. And we thought he meant McCain. What a disappointment he is turning out to be. His plan to save GM calls for moving production overseas and importing the cars. Thanks, BO for using OUR tax dollars to support more foreign people while you borrow 46 cents for every dollar you recklessly spend in you proposed budget. Looks like we traded down, not up. At least GW’s old policy was in place and caught the 4 terror suspects yesterday here in teh good ol’ USA. I guess Obama’s world tour of apologies didn’t work.

  40. Liberal Morons | May 21st, 2009 at 11:28 am

It is amazing that Americans are so stupid as to have forgotten 9/11. You people seem to forget that over 3100 americans died. What sane president would not use every tool at their disposal to ensure that doesn’t happen again. Here’s an idea for you, half of your family is beheaded and the rest of them will be if you can’t get the terrorist to talk, are you now in favor of waterboarding or should you give him a nice meal and ask him kindly to spare them. Morons!! Its a good thing your kind weren’t responsible for fighting the british – there wouldn’t ben an America to worry about then! But then again, Barack plans on turning the USA into a socialist state – taxing everyone into european submission. YOu have your socialist president and you’ll get exactly what you asked for – less american values, higher taxes, and a less secure nation!!

  41. gary | May 21st, 2009 at 11:29 am

    Just wondering…hmmm… HOW COME CHENEY N E V E R MENTIONS THAT IT WAS ON H I S AND B U S H ‘S WATCH THAT 9 / 11 D I D H A P P E N ! Just how safe did they make you feel when it was their watch that this TERROR ATTACK happened on !

  42. Check your facts Gary | May 21st, 2009 at 11:39 am

First of all, Bush was in office for all of what – 8 months. You forget that clinton did nothing about the US Cole bombing, the embassy bombings, and the military had Osama in their sights and clinton was to weak to give the green light to take him out. Again, weak foreign policy by the democrats is why the terrorists were emboldened to carry out 9/11. You sound like Obama – apologizing to the rest of the world when if clinton had the balls to take care of business, none of this would have occured. Talk nice to terrorist, see what happens. It seems to be working with Iran taunting us with daily missile launches…apologizing is working well!!

  43. Oleta Lovelace | May 21st, 2009 at 11:52 am

Brain damage doesn’t seem to matter much if you have been beheaded and have no head.

  44. joy | May 21st, 2009 at 12:16 pm

People in this country have little or no attention span I remember 9/11 vividly, when the 1st plane hit the WTC before we even knew it was intentional, CHENEY was no where in sight! Bush was in Florida, our fighter jets where over the ocean, pay attention! Why watch the news if you don’t learn from it! And I’d bet you 10 to 1 it was not coincidence no I DON’T BELIEVE IN conspiriacy theories but, they knew something more then spoken of and this generation of people will deny and distort it but, things usually come from future generations after the fact, we shall see.

As for GITMO I say take them all to iceland or siberia!
Cuba is way to close to our shores and those Castro boys don’t like us per history and for blood money well…
    just a thought.

  45. Nita Bensen | February 4th, 2010 at 09:45 am

Hi. good data on Maqui Berry. I discovered your pleasant blog while researching yahoo. For the last few days I have been trying to learn more. Particularly anything to do with the dieting talk. I’ve heard it all and my cousin keeps promoting her new weight loss fad on me. So I am grateful I encountered you. Best regards!
