Shirley Almquist, D.C. teacher

Shirley Almquist, 95, who taught in D.C. Public Schools for 31 years, died Feb. 13 at the Asbury Methodist Village retirement community in Gaithersburg.

She had respiratory failure, said daughter-in-law Jan Almquist.

Mrs. Almquist retired in 1971 from Alice Deal Junior High School, where she had taught history, geography and civics for about two decades. She had previously taught at District schools including Paul Junior High School.

Shirley Elizabeth Smith was a District native and a 1933 graduate of the old Central High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from Wilson Teachers College (now part of the University of the District of Columbia) in 1937 and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Gaithersburg.

Her husband of 63 years, John R. Almquist, died in 2002.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Almquist of Falls Church, David Almquist of Newark, Del., and Mark Almquist of Vienna; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
