GOP Rep Says He Would Support Probe Of Secret CIA Program
I’m a bit surprised this isn’t getting more attention: Last night, A Republican member of Congress — Rep Mac Thornberry — said he would support an investigation of the secret CIA program that was concealed from Congress.
We’ve already got calls for an Intel committee investigation from the Dem side into the revelation that the CIA concealed significant actions from Congress for years. Dem Rep Jan Schakowsky said in an interview with The Huffington Post that CIA officials could conceivably be charged with lying to Congress.
Thornberry is the first GOP Rep to say he could back a probe. Here’s what he said to guest interviewer Lawrence O’Donnell on Hardball last night (via Nexis):
O`DONNELL: So on the final word on this one today, Congressman Thornberry, you apparently agree…that what the CIA did in this case, as described by Leon Panetta, should be investigated by your committee.
THORNBERRY: Of course, we should. And we should do that before we start sending out letters to the press and making a lot of public statements about it.
Right now, I’m told, the chair of the Intel committee, Silvestre Reyes, is taking the temperature of fellow committee members to see if they back an investigation. So it seems significant that people can now refer to “bipartisan” support for such a probe.

You know it’s got to be something very disturbing if GOP members are coming out saying they want an investigation. It’s got to be bad, or else there is now a joint effort in Congress to get more control over the intelligence services. However, that doesn’t square with Boehner cheerleading them…
On a completely OT (but I think fun) note, here’s a quote from Peggy Noonan on Queen Sarah, the Deranged Icevixen Quitter Face:
“In television interviews she was out of her depth in a shallow pool. She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them. She couldn’t say what she read because she didn’t read anything. She was utterly unconcerned by all this and seemed in fact rather proud of it: It was evidence of her authenticity. She experienced criticism as both partisan and cruel because she could see no truth in any of it. She wasn’t thoughtful enough to know she wasn’t thoughtful enough. Her presentation up to the end has been scattered, illogical, manipulative and self-referential to the point of self-reverence. “I’m not wired that way,” “I’m not a quitter,” “I’m standing up for our values.” I’m, I’m, I’m.
In another age it might not have been terrible, but here and now it was actually rather horrifying.”
Noonan goes on to refute all the conservative arguments in Palin’s favor, from her supposed working-class credentials to the idea that she upsets the mainstream media.

Pelosi was every bit as informed on the decision to us EITs as were the GOP… but is now lying about it in an attempt to appease the antiwar left and fulfill specious campaign posturing.
And apparently Pelosi and Obama forgot something: the CIA KILLS people… it’s in their job description. Did these two really think that these killers were going to just meekly take-one-for-the-team… when the team captain is a lying, incompetent, arrogant nebbish who has basically told them they need to kiss his ring? -please
Obama really kicked an ant hill with his ill-advised and politically motivated release of Bush Administration memos regarding EITs.
Let’s have a hearing and get it all out there, shall we? Then watch the rats scatter who attacked Bush for protecting the country from terrorist attack… but who clearly knew what was going on five years before we heard a peep out of them.
This reminds me of the honorable about-face on the part of Congressman Walter Jones of North Carolina, who first proposed “Freedom Fries”, upon realizing that he had been misled by — wait for it — George Tenet (at Cheney’s direction). Mr. Jones earned my respect in a big way when he appeared on CSPAN at a meeting of the Democratic Policy Committee, as they interviewed Lawrence Wilkerson, Paul Pillar, Carl Ford, and Wayne White, of various intel organizations.
I even posted a transcript with a link to the video ( http://www.proudprimate.com/Placards/jones%20xscript.htm ) on my website of the hearing, and created a placard ( http://www.proudprimate.com/Placards/Walter%20Jones.htm )for the street, if you’d like to see it.
We can claim no moral superiority over dictators and terrorists if we allow our President (and VP) to behave like dictators, and our government agencies (the CIA) to behave like terrorists.
@ Reaganite Republican… “the CIA KILLS people… it’s in their job description.”
BALONEY! It is not in anyone job description! Just more neo-con spew! Although I am not saying they haven’t. But there are other secret organizations out there that I am sure most of you never heard of with more ruthless behavior and secrecy… but you can bet they exist. The real killers. Ask JFK. Oops! You can’t!
They all need to be shut down and investgated yesterday! If not, they’ll continue and the best part for them is that no one will pull the plug on them because they are all funded with a black fund and out of control. Most of the CIA operation is not secret! It’s these rogue black funded groups! CIA, DoD, etc.
And I find insult that you can comment on a public blog stating firmly that Pelosi is lying. How do you know? You were there? You read minds? Nope! State firmly that it is your opinion only… Because, I just don’t believe YOU!
Reaganite Republican,
Mr. Panetta admitted to Congress that the CIA withheld information from them. The CIA also withheld information from Mr. Panetta about a secret program which he ordered stopped the following day. Please try to keep up because John Boehner is NOT a credible source. As I see it, an investigation of this nature should not be a partisan venture but should be undertaken on behalf of the American people. Wrong is wrong, unless republicans say wrong is right, ex., Vitter, Craig, Foley, Ensign, Sanford, Gingrich. This is not to say that democrats don’t engage in similiar activities, but to point out that they do not make family values, morals, and Christianity a part of their political platforms, whereas, conservatives do, and when they violate their own principles, they refuse to live up to them. Although they set the rules, the rules are for everyone who is NOT a conservative. They have a permanent exemption, a get out of jail free card, a get off scot free deal, etc.
