Poll: Three-Fourths Of Republicans Say Congressional GOPers Haven’t Explained Their Health Care Plans

Dems today have been jumping on the fact that the new CBS/New York Times poll finds that an astonishing 76% of respondents say Republicans in Congress haven’t clearly explained their plans to reform the health care system.

But there’s an even more interesting number in the poll’s internals: Nearly as many Republican respondents — nearly three out of four — say the same thing.

Here’s the poll’s question: “Do you think the Republicans in Congress have clearly explained their plans for changing the health care system, or haven’t they clearly explained their plans?” And the answers, among Republicans:

Have explained 17
Haven’t explained 73
Don’t know 10

This is a rare case where Republican opinion is in line with public opinion overall. There’s broad agreement — among Democrats, independents, and, yes, Republicans — that Congressional GOPers haven’t clearly explained their reform plans.

No question, the poll contains some pretty sobering numbers for Obama. But the above is just an awful finding for Republicans. It’s hard to imagine a data point more in sync with today’s Dem talking point: That the 100-day anniversary of the GOP’s promise to produce a health care bill is upon us, and the GOP has yet to shed its “party of No” label.

After all, if even a big majority of Republicans say it…

Given this poll, I think that the polling that says Americans still want the Democrats to try to negotiate with the Republicans is just what Ethan and oddjob were saying it is below. They want Congress to act like grownups, but that doesn’t mean they want Congress to do what the minority wants to do, which is nothing.

It’s a shame they aren’t on this blog. With all the conservatives around here screaming “WE HAVE PLANS BUT DEMS ARE MEAN AND WON’T VOTE ON THEM!” over and over again, despite the complete disengenuousness of the statement…

Oh nevermind, it wouldn’t matter all that much.

    lol

Tax cuts for the Rich and… HEY WHAT’S THAT OVER THERE!

“Three-Fourths Of Republicans Say Congressional GOPers Haven’t Explained Their Health Care Plans”

As a Libertarian, I agree. They have plans but haven’t explained them well – just like Obama and the Dems. Not too surprising really.

  5. Tena | September 25th, 2009 at 03:06 pm

I don’t know – have you referenced this poll anywhere, Greg?:

    “Public Option
Poll: Plurality Of Republicans Support The Public Option

The new CBS/New York Times poll not only shows overwhelming support for the public option — it shows that a plurality of self-identified Republicans are for it, too.”

“Tax cuts for the Rich and… HEY WHAT’S THAT OVER THERE!” Why, it’s tort reform.

    ;)

  7. Ethan | September 25th, 2009 at 03:13 pm

sbj, the Libertarian candidate for President got less than half of one percent of the total votes (0.40%).

That should tell you about how much we (the USA) care about your opinion on anything.

So much for FEMA being an example of why government doesn’t work.

Tena – “tort reform” – LOL!!! And Tena, do you see how sbj is now referring to himself as a Libertarian. First it was Conservative instead of Republican and now it is Libertarian instead of Republican. You know it is going to be really interesting when all these new found Republican turned Libertarian groups start to actually merge with real bonafide, been this way for 30 years Libertarian groups – because besides the role of government, real Libertarians (fiscal and social) and these neo-conLibertarians don’t have nearly so much in common. I wonder how Libertarians are going to feel when Republicans start trying to take over their Party, or when Libertarians start to take over the Republican Party…it will be interesting what the social conservatives will have to say about that.

  11. sbj | September 25th, 2009 at 03:19 pm

Even I didn’t vote for Bob Barr!

@JennD: I am conservative. I am a Libertarian. The terms are not mutually exclusive. I have never called myself a Republican on this blog because I am not.

  14. Jenn D | September 25th, 2009 at 03:25 pm

Ethan~ Too funny…I am right here in ATL…Cobb County at that, which is the second hardest hit county besides Douglas County. Biden was speaking with our Gov right down the street from where I live, and good ol’ Saxby better be saying that right now…he better be suckin’ right up, because the Georgia GOP has been flirting with that secession rhetoric, which the base loves in red-state Georgia, but we all know is a bunch of bull, because Georgia, just like the rest of the South, have their mouths at the federal government trough 24/7. Imagine how much more $ the blue states would have if the South didn’t need so much “guvment welfar”! It is almost hysterical, the hypocrisy of the Southern GOP flirting with secession.

  15. Jenn D | September 25th, 2009 at 03:26 pm

sbj- Of course you are not a Republican! We know that, we do, we do.

  16. Ethan | September 25th, 2009 at 03:27 pm

Well Mr. “I’m Conservative, but I am a Republican. Put your warped brain to the test and answer the poll question that is the topic of this thread:

“Do you think the Republicans in Congress have clearly explained their plans for changing the health care system, or haven’t they clearly explained their plans?”

    The choices are:

    Have explained
    Haven’t explained
    Don’t know

  17. Ethan | September 25th, 2009 at 03:28 pm

Shd read: “I’m Conservative, but I am a Libertarian.”

  18. Jenn D | September 25th, 2009 at 03:29 pm

BBQ~ That is hysterical – a little over the top – but the point is well made and well taken….too funny!!!

I got a very clear understanding of the Republican Health Care Reform Plan, during all the years they were in complete charge. They made no attempt to pass any reform legisislation.

There policy is very clear. They want no reforms passed.

They love to pretend, when they are out of power, that they really want a chance to pass reforms. When they are in power, they never attempt to pass any such reforms.

  22. sbj | September 25th, 2009 at 03:40 pm

@ethan: Read a bit more closely, fella. See:

    edit;

Their policy is very clear. They want no reforms passed.

  24. Tena | September 25th, 2009 at 03:41 pm

“They made no attempt to pass any reform legisislation.”

Not disagreeing, but they did try to “reform” social security and the constitution on marriage.

SBJ, The Gay Republican Rooster, stands on his dung heap every morning, and crows in praise of the Fox that is trying to kill him.

  26. oddjob | September 25th, 2009 at 03:45 pm

There’s also a Wall St. Journal/NBC poll out today and its results appear to be rather different from the CBS/NYT poll. They appear to be much more in line with how most of the polling to date has been.

  27. lmsinca | September 25th, 2009 at 04:03 pm

I think what they really want is just keep everything the same and maybe give the “poor, sick folks” a little money (voucher/tax credit) to go buy their own, similar to what they tried to do with Medicars.

  28. lmsinca | September 25th, 2009 at 04:04 pm

    Ugh, Medicare.

  29. Tena | September 25th, 2009 at 04:10 pm

Imsinca – that sounds about right.

  30. lmsinca | September 25th, 2009 at 04:26 pm

They can’t try to sell what they really want because even their own constituents won’t buy it, so they’ve placed all their cards on the NO table. Too bad, they’ll have no say, except for Snowe, in shaping the most important legislation in decades, “Civil Rights for Sick People and the Uninsured”.

  31. Tena | September 25th, 2009 at 04:34 pm

Imsinca – yeah, I got an achingly polite email from my Republican Rep today in response to my email telling him I wanted single payer but I’ll take public option, period.

This is just one paragraph – but it’s representative:

“There is no doubt that we must fix health care in our country. No matter how sick you are and regardless of your financial status, you should have access to health care. You should know that if you get sick, you can get the care you need and that you won’t go bankrupt in the process. I want to ensure that you can have access to the health care you need, when you need it, and at a price you can afford.”

Must be a form letter they send to everyone, I got one from my guy too, exact same wording. Too bad they don’t tell you how they’re going to deliver. Or we could just go ask for charity, Cantor’s great idea.

  35. Freehold | September 25th, 2009 at 05:08 pm

I got a very clear understanding of the Republican Health Care Reform Plan, during all the years they were in complete charge. They made no attempt to pass any reform legislation.

Well, just off the top of my head ..

There is Medicare Advantage (which about 25% of Medicare folks have selected)

    Health Savings Accounts

Tort Reform (proposed but defeated by Democrats, which could save material amounts via reduced defensive medical procedures)

Its also worth keeping in mind the zero help that Democrats provided to Bush when he tried to make reforms to Social Security. I think he gets a lot of credit for at least trying.

  36. Gasman | September 25th, 2009 at 06:35 pm

They haven’t explained their “plan” because it is nothing more than obstructionism to any reform proposed by the Dems. They have made it abundantly clear that they are simply acting as boils on our national backside. They will accept no change or reform at all, no matter what amendments they make or even pass or how bipartisan the process is.

    BECAUSE THEY DON”T HAVE ANY

  38. kevsters | September 25th, 2009 at 10:12 pm

This health care debate is forcing Republicans to show their true colors. Like this article below says, John Kyl is a misogynistic, pro-life hypocrite.

  39. oddjob | September 25th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

I think he gets a lot of credit for at least trying.

    By destroying it?

    I don’t think so.

  40. oddjob | September 25th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

He wasn’t “trying”, he was trying to (”at last!”) destroy it, which is what they the GOP has most wanted to do since FDR was president!

  41. oddjob | September 25th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

(Well, the conservatives of the GOP have most wanted that, in any case. Eisenhower wrote off the conservatives as stupid and irrelevant for wanting that.)

  42. norrish hall | September 26th, 2009 at 10:23 am

My rent is $1600 a month or $19000 a year.
My rental contract is 20 pages long
The US spends $2,000,000,000,000 a year on health care
The Republican health care plan is 4 pages long.
My rental contract is 5 times longer than the Republican’s entire healthcare proposal.

The reason they never talk about it is because Their Health care plans a joke…and they know it!!!
