Poll: One Third Of Dems Less Likely To Vote In 2010 If Public Option Dies
This is striking: A new national poll finds that fully one third of Democratic voters say that they’re “less likely” to vote in 2010 if Congress doesn’t pass a public option, underscoring the possibility that dropping the provision seriously risks dampening the Dem base’s enthusiasm.
I was sent an advance look at these numbers by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America, which commissioned the poll from the nonpartisan Research 2000 and will release the results later this morning. The poll asks:
If Congress does not pass a public option as part of health care reform, will that make you more likely or less likely to vote in the 2010 general election, or no effect?
Among Dems, 33% say it would make them less likely, while less than one fourth that amount, 7%, say it would make them more likely. Sixty percent say it would have no effect.
Among independent voters, 21% say it would make them less likely, and 13% say it would make them more likely, with 66% saying it would have no effect, suggesting that passing a public option would have a marginal impact among indys.
Separately, in other advance excerpts of the same poll obtained by Sam Stein, 81% of Dems want Joe Lieberman punished if he filibusters health care reform.
Obviously, passions over the public option are on full boil right now. Passage of a health care bill of some kind, not to say the passage of time, could reduce the impact that dropping the public option could have on Dem turnout in the 2010 elections, particularly since they’re nearly a year away.
But these numbers are a reminder of just how dispirited the Dem base is by the party’s inability to leverage their comfortable majority in support of an agenda built on core liberal priorities.

vote repub or don’t vote = quick sellout to corp interests, continued run up of debt, continuation of wars,no movement on healtcare.
Vote dem = all of the above,PLUS heartbreak of betrayal by dems once again!
“Tena”, “mike from Arlington”, “holyhandgrenaid”, and “Ethan’s” attacks on “the left” are effective how?”
“The left” is already offended by the sell-out of the compromise of the compromise of the compromise of the day (pick a subject, it’s not just healthcare, I could probably name a dozen things off the top of my head).
Kicking “the left” for not being sufficiently supportive of conservative centrist politicians is NOT effective.
“Tena”, “mike from Arlington”, “holyhandgrenaid”, and “Ethan’s” “kick the left” approach to political dialogue is more helpful to the right wing than any lefty media outlet trying to push left wing legislation.

Primary right wing Dems, defeat Republicans, and retain Democratic majorities.

Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results is the definition of CRAZY! Keep holding onto that old belief that Democratic party is the anti Republican party and you will find yourself wondering what happened and why.
Accepting that the system has been infiltrated, corrupted and is currently being manipulated by powerful special interests who control the efforts of both parties is the first step to realizing the next evolutionary step of our little democratic republic my friends.
Switch parties, force the Repubs to accept and represent the unwashed and the poor in order to have a larger voting block- force the Dems to spend some time alone in the weeds pondering their future as politicians.
The pro lobbyists, pro campaigners, pro polling outfits would be lost!
You can always go back to being a Dem once they have earned the right of your presence and support.
Republican “Mike E” bizarrely claims that working AGAINST the Democratic Party is good for the Democratic Party.
Look, Republican “Mike E”, I wish you the best in trying to moderate the Republican-Corporatist-Theocrat Party.
But again, the best things that those on the left who want more can do is:
Primary right wing Dems, defeat Republicans, and retain Democratic majorities.

Simple, STOP VOTING democrat/republican. Everyone is expecting things to be different decade after decade. Vote anything other than dems & reps. Duhh!

I hope it is finally beginning to dawn on some of the Kool-Aid drinkers that Obam’s mantra “Change We Can Believe In” was from the very beginning just another euphemism for “More of the Same” – politics as usual from the corrupt Chicago political machine.
Whenever elections go to the Republicans, CONSERVATIVES WIN. When elections go to the Democrats, CONSERVATIVES WIN.
Call it whichever you want – “change” or “politics as usual.” Makes no difference who you vote for, makes no difference who wins or loses.
Why would LIEberman still filibuster…he’s getting everything he wants…..No true reform….No affordability but the Big mandated bailout to the insurance profiteers. Watch the health ins. co’s stocks go up today. PATHETIC !
Here’s the deal. Big business and the insurance profiteers block real healthcare reform, which certainly requires a (not for profit) public option. They use their solid connections with the TV networks, the Republican base and a few corrupt allies within the Democratic Party, like Lieberman, to deny our country what it must have to compete successfully in the global economy… like every other country in the modern world.
The Republicans take back control of Congress. They run another empty suit shill for President and beat the neutered Obama ticket, easily. The middle class erodes further, our infrastructure crumbles, while quality of life deteriorates for all but the wealthiest citizens… game over, USA!
Lieberman should lose his chairs and should not be permitted to attend the Democratic caucus. The Democrats do not need his vote.
Republicans would love it if Democrats stayed at home and didn’t vote. Everyone should vote…..its you right. Stay home if you want republicans in charge again.
Obama is a traitor to the people and in 2012 he’d best run on the GOP ticket. As for the Dems in congress who consistently side with drug and insurance companies–2010 is not far away. These are monstrous people. Politicians are elected to serve, not to be self-serving. They live in comfort, protected by the best health care American tax payers can give them, and stab us all in the back. They stare us in the face and tell us that we cannot have what they have–that they are better than we are and they deserve to be healthy, while we don’t. They are comfortable mouthing their hypocrisies and watching us die. Verbal attacks are simply not adequate against these monsters.
Chalk me up as a disillusioned Democrat. Don’t harangue me with your “just hang in there” ****, or try to dress up the cratering of reform as some hidden incremental step in the right direction. I got on the bandwagon because I not only subscribed to the message of Change, but because, after 8 years of Bush I thought conditions were actually ripe to effect real change. I saw Obama running a campaign that not only had good optics, but operated differently… ~engaging~ real people and getting them to care enough to do a lot more than just vote on election day.
I don’t care how you want to frame it, Obama is selling us out. He sold us out on Healthcare by telling Reid to capitulate to Lieberman. He sold us out on Healthcare by agreeing beforehand to a deal with Pharma that, despite denials, is playing out like a script. He sold us out on Wall Street reform to Goldman and Citi. He’s selling us out on consumer financial reform to the credit card companies. He sold us out on Afghanistan to god knows what military-industrial interest.
Obama built his brand on big bold ideals about real people. He is governing like a corporate lobbyist.
Go ahead, call me a traitor, or a troll, or whatever happy story allows you to sustain the illusion that real Democrats who believed in Obama are not disillusioned. You’ve got a sad wake up call next November. You sold us something you can’t deliver. Now you want us to rush out and buy an upgrade.
I for one will not contribute or work for the dems.I would rather destroy the party and teach the turncoats a lesson.
Myson was so disgusted with obama that he threw out all the memorabilla he was saving.
This is what “progressive” means today, apparently: Force Americans who don’t have insurance to pay a fat monthly check to private for-profit businesses that are protected from competitive pricing by an anti-trust exemption. And then wrap that up as improved healthcare coverage for all. Holy Mother of God, what have we wrought? Seriously. What kind of monstrosity is this?
I promise not to vote in 2010 or 2012 if Obama and the Democrats pass this bill w/o a public option. Democrats must be stopped. If necessary, we must give the Congress back to the Republicans.
Count me as another one. I definitely won’t be volunteering for Obama again, like I did in 08. Without jobs, healthcare, carbon reduction, peace, and an end to subsidies for the rich, this is a failed presidency.
Dems. need to do a little searching .might find out that making people comfortable in their poverty just makes the situation worse for them. When three generations of folks going out to their mail box to see if their Gov. check came on time all get up off their butts and find something to do, we will all be better off.Any Government powerful enough to give you everything also has the power to take it all away !!!
Count me out also, I don’t think he’s such a good choice , too bad he lied all the way and the main stream media still don’t get it. they are still giving him alot of cover as he continues his shredding of the Constitution
Move On needs to organize a massive march on Washington for January – when they come back from break. I am willing to help! PLEASE – help us get to DC and make our voices heard. It is unbelievable to think that the tea party can out protest us! If they can – well then we DESERVE to lose.
Bye, Tena. Have a nice time in Italy. Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya — you and your teenage-level worship of (God help us) a POLITICAL FIGURE (he’s a politician, not one of the Jonas Brothers, fer cryin’ out loud).
If progressives don’t learn to play hardball, we’ll continue to get tossed under the bus. That is all.
Time for Obama to get some guts. I heard once that LBJ got his way by calling the opposition into his offic one on one, and telling them that if he did not get their support on this or that bill he was going to break their butts every chance he got. Although, LBJ probably did not put it that delicately. It is time for Obama to do the same and give the people what they voted for. He tried bi-partisanism. It didn’t work. Forget it and be a Democrat. That’s what we elected.
@ eyezon:
Obama tried bipartisanism? Really? When? I agree that LBJ strongarm tactics is more his style. But he lacks the public support that LBJ had. Let him go full “Chicago Style” and see where that gets him. Already people are changing parties from Democrat to Independant, and that includes Congressmen!
Pelosi and Obama have highjacked the Party. That their action would result in this was foreseeable. That it would hit them this faxst was the gamble they lost on.
He makes promises. He fails to deliver. How is he different enough for people to actually Hope again? Answer: He is not; he is just an empty suit like the rest of the professional politicians!!!
