Poll: Majority Of Republicans Opposes Wilson’s “You Lie” Outburst

If, as expected, many House Republican officials rally behind Joe Wilson for his “you lie” moment during the House debate on Wilson today, they will be putting themselves out of step with rank and file voters in their own party.

Yep, if you look at the relevant numbers buried in this new Gallup poll, you’ll see that a majority of Republicans opposes Wilson’s outburst. Here’s the breakdown of Republican attitudes towards the “you lie” moment:

Support, thrilled: 9%
Support, not thrilled: 30%
No opinion: 8%
Oppose, not outraged: 44%
Oppose, outraged: 8%

As you can see, 44 percent oppose what Wilson did, but are not outraged, while another eight percent oppose it and are outraged. That’s a total of 52% of Republicans who oppose Wilson’s explosion — versus only 39% who support it.

So it looks as if the Republican officials who intend to rally around Wilson today are more beholden to the Glenn-Beck-listening, tea-partying, Wilson-defending GOP base than they are to ordinary rank-and-file Republicans.

Separately, the new CNN poll finds that an overwhelming majority of 85% overall think what Wilson did was inappropriate. It’s another sign of just how far outside the mainstream the aforementioned Beck-listening, tea-partying, Wilson-defending GOP base has drifted.

while one hesitates to call what the GOP has is “leadership” it is clear that Wilson is them and
they are him. Limbaugh,Hannity, and Beck are the tails
that wag the dog. Fineman tried to say that many big time
Repubs disapprove but are afraid to say so. Guess they’re
    all “hiking the appalachian trail.”

Not to mention out of step with 99% of the rest of the country.

bill – there is no leadership in the GOP right now which is why people like Wilson are out front, where everyone can see them. It’s why the inmates have completely taken over the GOP asylum.

    They are leaderless, rudderless, useless.

    Greg,

I have encountered no problems with the site, today.

  6. mike from Arlington | September 15th, 2009 at 10:53 am

I suppose the extreme radicalism of the remaining Republicans is so apparent now because many of those remaining in office are from fairly safe districts/states and they can afford to take a hard line stance and stand firm and not denounce the fringe elements of their party.

  7. mike from Arlington | September 15th, 2009 at 10:54 am

No problems here in Arlington either!

sbj and scott – read it and weep.

I am happy that the there still saner repubs at the grassroots level unlike their entire frigging political leadership.

Greg, open dns problem many times today. I also emailed you about this.

Greg – like I said below – I can’t get to the page most of the time. Last night it was taking me to an Apache Tomcat administration page, or else dns messages.

This morning – straight dns. Over and over

Greg – this was the reason for the two cryptic emails I sent yesterday, if you didn’t understand what I was asking.

Good for House Dems for punishing Joe Wilson. We need to start treating fringe Republicans like the children they are. Time out in the corner is called for. TPM is also reporting that Joe Wilson’s own wife asked him who the “nut” was who yelled out during Obama’s speech. Ha!

  13. Tena | September 15th, 2009 at 11:15 am

Well, while Congress is at it, they ought to vote on censuring Yeezy for being a jacka*s*s/giant d*o*u*c*h*e.

I loved it that Obama just flat said he was a jacka*s*s*. My favorite moments with Obama have been when he came out with one of those genuine reactions to something.

As I understand it, President Obama words, when he said that Kanye West was a Jackass, was supposed to be off the record, but Terry Moran of ABC news posted it on Twitter, and then removed it. I hate Twitter, because many of it’s users are just Nit-Twits.

Now that what the President said has been made public, I feel he should make a public apology for his remarks.

I feel that he should look straight into the camera and say:

I wish to make a complete and sincere apology to all Jackasses, for having compared them to Kanye West.

Miss Tena 99% of the country? Really? Maybe 51%of people with a different point of view but not 99%. Hey I got an idea if I don’t inflate the numbers from saterdays march you don’t inflate your numbers on how many people agree with you.

    Greg

I’ve had trouble getting in both days.

Here’s a good one from CNN and Anderson Cooper about the Tea Party and how they try to disavow some of the more extreme protestors while encouraging them behind the scenes.

Have to unleash a bit re: Terry MORON, sorry… But imho he should be fired immediately NOT just for reporting off-the record comments (which he should be fired for also) but most especially for the snide latter part of the tweet:

    “Now THAT’s Presidential”

    That pisses me off S-O F-R-E-A-K-I-N-G M-U-C-H.

It was OFF THE RECORD. Of course he wouldn’t say such things in public. Neither would Bush. Ya think Bush was all roses and candy off the record? My gawd. FIRE THIS INSANE IDIOT ASAP.

Wilson is NOT the only one..Listen to the speech again. Clearly, someone else shouts “Lie” or Something similar in the moments when the GOP is booing. Then, once the room quiets down Wilson does his thing. This clearly proves that this was not his emotions taking over. EITHER he said it once and was dissatisfied that it was drowned out by the other boos and he wanted to make sure he publicly demeaned the President OR he decided to copy whoever it was to originally shout it in the seconds before.Neither of these two options look good of Wilson and both show that it is he who is now lying in his apologies.

  25. Petroleum | September 15th, 2009 at 01:09 pm

@Unfortunate: Miss Tena wrote “99% of the rest of the country”. Reading and counting are useful skills, n’est-ce pas? (Hope I spelled that right! ;-) )

  26. Scott C. | September 15th, 2009 at 02:06 pm

    Greg:

So it looks as if the Republican officials who intend to rally around Wilson today are more beholden to the Glenn-Beck-listening, tea-partying, Wilson-defending GOP base than they are to ordinary rank-and-file Republicans.

You really need to take some logic courses. Your conclusoin does not at all follow from the evidence.

First of all, the poll question did not ask if people supported some kind of official reprimand. It is entirely possible for someone to oppose Wilson’s behavior while also opposing any official action against him. Indeed, it is likely that many if not most of those “opposed but not outraged” would fall into this category. So an official “supporting” Wilson in the House debate could equally be beholden to this demographic, as opposed to one that supports Wilson’s behavior.

Second, the poll says nothing about what Glenn Beck listeners think. You assume (quite explicitly) that Beck listeners support Wilson’s behavior, but the poll tells us nothing about that, and you have provided no evidence to support the assumption. Various Beck listeners could easily hold varying views on it.

Lastly, you assume that officials engaged in the Wilson debate are necessarily “beholden” to one group or another rather than expressing their own sincerely held opinion. This could be true, but there is no reason to assume it is the case.

So really the conclusion you make is based on nothing other than wild speculation and, probably, your own prejudices. Shocker that!

BTW, it is interesting that you note that most Republicans disagree with (your assumptions about) Beck’s followers, yet you still define Beck’s followers as the Republican base. How does that work?

<breaders, can you let you know what you all are experiencing tech wise?

Yes…The site doesn’t seem to be updating for me. Every time I open the site, it’s the same subject. Can your tech guys get something on here other than tired old Wilson stories?

  28. Unfortunate | September 15th, 2009 at 02:41 pm

PETRO YES it is so . Since you are the great deviner explain what 1% and what 99% of the country Tena is talking about. The tin hat must be over my eyes.

  29. Annie | September 15th, 2009 at 03:38 pm

You have reported the results of the poll incorrectly – the actual number of people opposed and outraged as reported by Gallup is 23%, not 8%.The totals are 68% opposed, 23% support. [Gallup's site prevents direct copying, but if you use 'file' 'select all' 'copy' then paste into a word document you can copy the correct table or save it as an image file.]

  30. kevo | September 15th, 2009 at 04:20 pm

Wilson needs to be formally rebuked for violating the practiced decorum in the Chamber of the most powerful democracy on the face of the planet – nothing more, nothing less. To support such cat-calling by ratiionalizing or by nonchalance is to let loose the hounds of hell upon our nation’s ability to carry out civil discourse. Look at its effects already – Williams on the court, West on stage, Drudge in his recent headline (White boy beaten).

For the love of your nation Joe Wilson, apologize to the House for your unfortunate outburst so we can move forward, for you cat-call is now the catalyst to this dangerous spike in the everpresent racial undercurrent here in our beloved country! -Kevo

  31. el pinche | September 15th, 2009 at 04:32 pm

so bottom line, 85% (humans) think Wilson is a d1ck.

  32. Jan | September 15th, 2009 at 05:18 pm

Joe Wilson did not just lose control of his emotions. Anyone who believes that is a fool. He simple miscalculated. I’m sure he thought his “side” would all erupt in agreement. OOPS!

  33. john g | September 15th, 2009 at 05:24 pm

Joe Wilson: Cheap, country Christmas white trash.

  34. Bill Valenti | September 15th, 2009 at 05:26 pm

The fecklessness of the GOP leadership is exceeded only by their stunning cowardice.

  35. wendy | September 15th, 2009 at 05:33 pm

Is it any wonder that liberal and moderate Republicans are withdrawing from active participation in the GOOP party , longing for the good old GOP (Grand Old Party)? I wonder how many of them leave politics and quietly are changing their party registration to Independent or Democrat?

  36. huffy2001 | September 15th, 2009 at 08:15 pm

They may be the minority, but they own all the guns. I fear trouble is abrewin’ and it’s not going to be pretty.

Of course huffy fear the law abiding gun owner, rather than the rights stealing leftwinger. Most of us Gun owners would never turn a firearm on anybody save for someone threatening our wifes or children. I would even defend the life of a marxsist

  38. Tom | September 15th, 2009 at 09:14 pm

You do realize it’s spelled “plumb” line right?

But if you spend all of your time focused on politics you have probably never used a plumb bob anyway.

  39. sachet | September 15th, 2009 at 09:40 pm

I see that the Repubs support thuggery. That poll should have been 100% of Repubs against that kind of damaging behavior by an elected official.

  40. susie | September 15th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

no one sitting around Mr. Wlson looked very surprised.

  41. SueW | September 16th, 2009 at 12:36 am

Has Wilson ever once qualified his mindless outburst? Ever said exactly *what* Obama was supposedly lying about? Or shown the slightest proof?

  42. James Anderson | September 16th, 2009 at 01:52 am

This gives me hope that the opposition will bring their party back from the angry ideology to practical sensible moderates. I’m actually a conservative I think but conservatives nowadays scare me, with bring guns to town hall meeting with the president? a church let him do that what kind of church does that? what does that church preach?

  43. Bud | September 16th, 2009 at 05:01 am

People like to be on the right side of history and this survey is one to attempt just that however Joe Wilson disgraced the Office of The Presidency his Congress the Nation and the state of SC. He set a divide for generations to come.

  44. hoser | September 16th, 2009 at 03:45 pm

tech wise I keep getting spam talking about Glenn Beck in 1990, or 1,990 protesters, I don’t know, too weird.
