Huge Majority Of MoveOn Members Supports Passing Senate Bill

Here’s a pretty clear indication that the left, whatever its disappointment with the Senate health bill, still overwhelmingly sees passing it as by far the best course of action.

As I noted here yesterday, MoveOn polled its members to ask whether the organization should support or oppose passing the Senate bill. Check out these results, sent over by a MoveOn official:

Should MoveOn support or oppose the final health care bill if it looks like the plan recently proposed by President Obama?

Support 83
Oppose 17

Not terribly surprising, perhaps, but MoveOn’s membership is comprised of pretty hard-core liberal activists, and this shows pretty clearly that among this crowd, the kill-the-bill camp overwhelmingly lost the argument.

  • Yay! Liberals are not complete deadenders. I watched Markos on Countdown and his comments about Kucinich really heartened me. I’m glad that we’re coming together on this.

  • I belong to MoveOn.org and I also prefer single payer. However, I feel STRONGLY that they need to pass health care reform and that means passing the Senate bill.

  • Anyone notified Jane yet? LOL

Meanwhile, I’ve been holding off sending any more cash to MoveOn till the results of this poll was announced. Good thing payday is tomorrow!

  • Another great example of how the left has compromised in order to get significant legislation passed.

From now on, any time “bipartisanship” is mentioned, I want to see it countered with this kind of example: the left was bipartisan in compromising on HCR before the Dems passed it. Period.

  • Instead of bipartisan, BG, how about just that the left was REASONABLE and WILLING TO COMPROMISE with other reasonable members of Congress but the GOP was entirely UNREASONABLE and negotiated in BAD FAITH?

  • Not sure if you’ve been following, but OFA is coming out with a daily campaign for the final push.

Yesterday they provided a number of flyers to print out and post in support of HCR.

Today, they’ve contacted all on the mailing list and provided your local Congressman and his POC info, instructed people to contact them and report back.

I assume this will continue on. We’ll see.

  • This reflects pretty clearly on our many prior questions as to whether the WH is communicating and acting properly as regards the Dem base.

  • Good, now we can all donate and help them get some ads up. In the meantime call Durbin’s office and ask him why he won’t support a PO ammendment in reconciliation. We need to get this done.

Mike, I’ve been getting those emails from DeParle, today the number is 625, the number of people in the US who lose their insurance every hour. We need all hands on deck with this one.

  • “This reflects pretty clearly on our many prior questions as to whether the WH is communicating and acting properly as regards the Dem base.”

Not sure about that one Bernie. I think it proves the base is not abandonning Obama even if they don’t get what they want. I read a lot of the comments over at Move On yesterday from those of us who voted yes to support the bill. Lots of compromise language, it’s a start, 31 million insured, not the bill we wanted but the one we got, pass this and keep fighting, etc.

  • Prag, agreed, but I’d throw this in David Broder’s face as an example of why he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Another example: you want bipartisanship? How about the bipartisan condemnation of Liz Cheney’s slander of the DoJ?

    Suck it bipartisan hacks.

  • Even MORE (from Yglesias) on Ryan’s terrible budget:

    http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2010/03/underexplored-elements-of-ryan-budget-roadmap.php

Did he go to college? It wasn’t correspondence school, was it?

  • BG, I like that he called it the Ryan Ripoff. Are they really going to run on this? I almost hope they do because it’s so easy to debunk and ridicule.

Re Bipartisanship, maybe next time we could hold the compromising back until we get something in return, eh?

  • The Ryan Ripoff.

    That’s all kinds of awesome!

  • Something in return from who lms? The entire negotiation was among Democrats and, presumably, involved getting votes in return. Just because the GOP did not participate doesn’t mean there was no give and take. Obviously, the Democratic party now encompasses a spectrum of political views including those previously held by “moderate” republicans, a species that no longer exists.

  • Imsinca – I understand. My argument is that a realistic strategy of any WH must be based on a reasonably accurate estimation of what that base (defining ‘base’ here as the more passionate and ideological) will do when/if it doesn’t get precisely what it wants. Will it abandon the WH or will it continue to support it?

Of course this isn’t black/white as the level of passion and commitment can be affected. But who, four months ago, would have supposed that the HC bills might still be as they are and yet see polling numbers such as those above?

  • “pretty hard-core liberal activists”

this vote would seem to contradict that – and as they were born trying to Move the country On for the head DLC’er Bill Clinton, I’m not buying this “pretty hard-core liberal activists”

either way, I hope conservative dems join and start giving them money. I surely won’t.

  • A new polling memo from Joel Benenson, the White House’s pollster of choice, argues that support for President Barack Obama’s health care plan has been building in the wake of his State of the Union speech in late January.

Since February 1, according to data compiled by Benenson, 44 percent of those tested in national surveys support the bill while 45 percent oppose it — a sea change from the 38 percent favor/52 percent oppose average of polls conducted in the three months prior.

  • We were told “Pass NAFTA now and we’ll fix it later” and it never got fixed.

We were told “Pass ‘No Child Left Behind’ now and we’ll fix it later” and it never got fixed.

We were told “Pass the Patriot Act now and we’ll fix it later” and it never got fixed.

  • I wonder where News Ref is today….

It sometimes is a shake up to realize just how far out on a limb you are by yourself.

  • $70 BILLION bailout for insurance companies that will force us to give money to the same scum who have been ******** us for years in exchange for policies that won’t have a deductible too large to be usable. AND no enforcement mechanism to hold the ins co’s responsible.

As Sebelius said, the bill fails and the insurance companies fail in a decade or so…thats a much better outcome than anything this POS bill does.

  • This is about health and life for millions of Americans. Whatever your objections to the bill, remember that.

  • Sorry that was WILL HAVE deductibles too high to be usable in my last post

  • Thank god – I unsubscribed to a number of organizations when they were advocating killing the bill.

One hopes this will be helpful with the Progressive Caucus.

  • Tell Republican Obstructionists and DINO’s that mainstream conservatives support healthcare reform now. The issue of Tort reform is moot. In Texas where there are the most stringent Tort Reform laws, so-called defensive diagnostic tests are on the rise. Insurance rates have increased with no end in sight, and Texas has 6 million uninsured middle class working Americans.

Tell Republican and DINO Congressmen that we want negligent errors by Doctors decreased. Innocent Americans who go to Americas hospitals for treatment should not be limited in judicial recourse due to doctors’ errors. Most doctor errors are preventative: washing hands to prevent infections. All liability cases are brought to court in the most severe circumstances such as operating on the wrong side of the patients’ body. In Congressman John Murtha’s case, it was a snip of his intestines during a routine bladder surgery that cost him his life. Should his family be prohibited from financial recourse due to so called tort reform?

I oppose my party on this issue because I have seen my insurance rates go from a deductible of $1200 in 2006 to $3600 in 2010. I have never filed a medical claim. That is why I urge our silent majority of conservatives to let Congress know that we are CONSERVATIVES FOR HEALTHCARE REFORM NOW!
CALL ALL THE SENATORS IF YOU ARE TIRED OF RISING INSURANCE RATES.

  • Which is why I quit MoveOn. They’re about as progressive as the Pope.

  • Oakland:
Very funny!! You are wrong, though. Remember Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler?

  • Move on and others need to let America know this is the beginning of reform and not the end if we turn out in force to again elect Democrats to the congress. We see the obstructionist to middle class getting a fair deal so we need to vote those corporate bought members out and replace them with representatives of the people.

That goes for Dems like Stupid, Lincoln, Ben Nelson and Republican’s. We need a congress willing to do whats good for the middle class and stop selling us out to those with the big bucks.

  • Rush Limbaugh state on Monday that if healthcare reform passes, he would emigrate to Costa Rica.

Please call Blue Dog Democrats in the House and let them know that the vast majority of American people, and businesses, want this healthcare reform bill to pass.

  • “Rush Limbaugh state on Monday that if healthcare reform passes, he would emigrate to Costa Rica.”

Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey, goodbye!

  • 83 to 17? MoveOn has only one hundred members?

  • good thing nobody gives two squirts of duck s#@t what the leftist commie whackjobs at moveon want. get a job and buy your own healthcare you blood sucking leaches.

  • If President Obama’s proposal passes, it will be worse than doing nothing. And genuine health care reform will have to wait another 10-15 years. I was astonished that MoveOn could abandon the public option just like that. President Obama campaigned on the public option and said he would veto any health care bill without it. The House has already passed it, the Senate has 51 votes for it.

  • I’m actually donating to Firedoglake today. And calling Kucinich’s office to reiterate my support for his most principled original stance. Thanks for the reminder.
