Pelosi: Judge Dems’ Success On Whether We Create “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs”

I noted here yesterday that some Democrats are worried that the bad economy will combine with the escalation to depress the Democratic base, with potentially disastrous consequences for Dems in the 2010 midterm elections.

Today, however, Nancy Pelosi shot down that theory, saying the Dem performance would turn on one thing only: “Jobs, jobs, jobs.” Asked whether the Afghan surge could dampen Dem turnout, Pelosi replied:

“I believe that the Democratic base, as well as the Republican base and the independent base, is interested in jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs. I think the focus is so much more now on job creation, and that really is what we are all focused on as well.”

Also interesting: Pelosi basically said straight out that the jobs metric should be the one used to measure whether Dems have succeeded:

“Meeting the needs of America’s families and seeing the progress they make is what is important to us and to the President. We will measure our success in that way; and hopefully the American people will, too, in the next election.”

The declaration that jobs are paramount will reassure Dems who had been worrying that party leaders were slow to realize how politically perilous the unemployment numbers are for the party.

On the other hand, Pelosi’s bald declaration that the jobs numbers should be the metric used to define Democratic success could well be used against Dems later, if the numbers don’t turn around.

Update: Republicans are wasting no time jumping on the quote. NRCC spokesman Ken Spain emails a response:

“By Nancy Pelosi’s own definition, the Democrats are in deep trouble heading into 2010. The Obama administration, with the help of Nancy Pelosi and her puppets, promised that passage of the ’stimulus’ bill would keep unemployment below the eight percent threshold. If the ’stimulus’ was such a success then why are then why the need for a ‘jobs summit’ or a second stimulus bill?”

I hope so, but it sounded too much like Reid saying reconciliation was off the table.

  • Republican Hoover drove unemployment to over twenty five percent. That is the record, no matter how many times Joe Lamebrainman tries to lie his way out of it.

  • Another Joe Leiberman untruth…

Yes green jobs will be the wave of the future, as they have been EVERYWHERE they have been tried. Oh, wait, every green jobs program that has been tried anywhere, Spain comes to mind, has been a complete disaster.

    Another example of Joe’s misinformation…

How about Germany’s recycling efforts…hardly disastrous

Or China’s energy conservation program…again hardly a disaster

The only one on the right who is more uninformed than Joe Lie is Sister Sarah and at the rate he’s posting he may catch her by next week!!!!

  • Interesting numbers coming out of coming out of Arkansas regarding Senate election polling.

  • What is it about the type of people who play Polo.

They’re often quite wealthy, and thus perfect targets for the right sort of con men.

  • Well well I’m afraid the site is eating posts again…:-)

    Let’s try one more time..

    HAHAHA! Point taken.

  • That couple are a consummate pair of Grifters. They would have looked at home in the movie; The Sting.

I caught their act on the NBC morning show. The woman wore a very large cross, and she kept moving it slightly with her fingers, to make sure that the viewers eyes were drawn to her cross. A very nice professional grifter move.

Also, did anyone notice the cheap ill-fitting suit that the guy wore to the White House.

  • “You would be extremely hard-pressed to find a single economist who thinks unemployment will be below 10% when the midterms roll around.”

In a quick search I found a couple forecasts for mid 9s by end of next year. I would say these are conservative but fair given the heat the WH got for using a 8% benchmark for this year. Don’t forget that terrible 8% gaffe by the WH was the result of reviewing lots of private and public forecasts. Many of those forecast were higher and many were lower. It’s not a perfect science.

  • It really does NOT matter what the Republicans say. What is FAR MORE IMPORTANT is what the Democrats DO in terms of job creation.

  • “That couple are a consummate pair of Grifters.”

    Well yeah.

The question is how a pair of grifters talked their way in.

  • What we have to have is a favorable hiring trend established. If more people are being hired, than are losing their jobs, we can run on that, and against the Republican Economic depression that caused the massive job losses.

All we have to do is keep on pointing out that we have stopped the job loss trend, and things are starting to improve and then keep asking the question of the voters:

Do you want to give the Republicans another chance at creating another Depression, or do you want to let us finish pulling us out of the last Republican Depression?

  • Really people… it’s not worth arguing with “Joe Lieberman” because he has no interest listening to your arguments (kind of like the real Lieberman).

Also, “Nancy Pelosi and her puppets”? How did Pelosi wind up being so demonized? She really isn’t a firebrand, and her parliamentary techniques are the same as every other speaker has used.

The jobs situation is going to have to get better before the elections in 2010. If the economy starts to feel better for many people, I suspect the enthusiasm gap will shrink a bit. The good news is that every month, the jobs situation gets a little less bad – not good, but less bad. I think the main concern is that the slope of recovery is not steep enough. A jobs bill might help accelerate the recovery a bit. On the radio today, I heard talk about using some of the TARP money that the big banks are starting to pay back for this. That seems to have two benefits to my mind: 1) it makes available quite a bit of money with no additional expansion of the deficit (that money was already allocated, so it’s already appeared in the deficit) and 2) it has a bit of symbolic value since it’s money that formerly went to “fat cats” and is now being used to bail out “average joes”.

  • How did Pelosi wind up being so demonized?

By representing San Francisco, by being a woman unafraid to speak her mind, by being a woman unafraid to be politically ambitious, and by being a woman unafraid to be influential.

The only way you’re allowed to be that sort of woman is if you’re Phyllis Schlafly.

  • So I wonder which leftist “economic” measures the lefty loons here support.

    Raise taxes
    Tariffs
    More massive spending
    Increase welfare and unemployment comp
Wage and price controls and outlawing competition
    Massive public works

Something else? I mean besides nationalizing health care. Why not just declare “war on business,” like FDR did?

  • Quarterbrain is such a liar. He not only lied about being a lawyer, now he is lying about FDR.

There was no business to attack when FDR took over from Hoover, who had ruined the economy, and left office with a 25% unemployment level.

  • Massive public works

You mean like repairing municipal water systems that in our largest cities are often a century old now, or older?

I guess qb thinks “water main breaks” without end are just the best!

  • Sorry, Liam the Liar, your demigod hero President FDR was proud and explicit about his “war on business.” As usual, You Lie.

I just asked you all a question, oddball. I guess you can’t answer it. As expected.

  • I guess qb can’t read. Apparently all that **** about law school was ****.

    Who knew?

  • Yes Indeed, in the demented mind of Quarterbrain, restorting the economy that was destroyed by Republican Hoover, with a twenty five percent unemployment level, and business leaders jumping out of buildings, is what he considers an attack on business.

FDR restore the jobs situation to the point where people had money to spend, so that businesses had someone to sell their products and services to. Some attack on business.

Quarterbrain is a congenital and imbecilic liar.

  • Democratic President F.D.R. gave birth to America’s power. F.D.R. pulled US out of the Republican Great Depression, F.D.R. won World War II, and F.D.R. made America the strongest nation on earth.

That’s why right wingers like “quarterback” hate him, they just hate America.

  • Let me repeat that:

Democratic President F.D.R. gave birth to America’s power.

F.D.R. pulled US out of the Republican Great Depression, F.D.R. won World War II, and F.D.R. made America the strongest nation on earth.

That’s why right wingers like “quarterback” hate him, they just hate America.

  • “FDR restore the jobs situation to the point where people had money to spend, so that businesses had someone to sell their products and services to. Some attack on business.”

You are an ignorant fool. FDR proudly and openly declared “war on business” and waged it for years. He called it that. He hated all business men and treated business as the enemy, largely because he was such a failure in business himself, as he was at everything except getting elected to office. Did you know that, that FDR was an utter failure at everything in life except getting elected?

He prolonged and worsened the Depression by many years with his moronic and unconstitutional policies of outlawing competetion, jailing small businessmen for not following mandatory industry price codes, raising taxes to ridiculous levels, and establishing a massively corrupt system of cronyism. He even originated the political and personal use of the IRS to persecute political foes. The only good thing he did was begin to cut back the destructive Smoot Hawley tariffs.

And FDR didn’t “win” WWII. That’s as stupid a claim as you’ve made yet.

He destroyed much of what was America and our Constitution and created all the long term problems we now have. And that is why you idolize him, because you hate America and want to destroy it.

  • FDR proudly and openly declared “war on business” and waged it for years. He called it that.

    Okay @sshole, citation?

  • Right wingers “quarterback” has no loyalty to America, he allies himself with violent extremists who want to cut America into little pieces and go back to the days of slavery (literally).

  • Democratic President F.D.R. saved capitalism from the Republican’s Great Depression.

Because of Democratic President F.D.R.’s decisive use of governmental powers, capitalism was saved from the ruinous Republican economic disasters that had gambled this country into a hole and left millions unemployed and hungry.

Democratic President F.D.R. quickly cut unemployment by 40% and did so by building much of the infrastructure that created the foundation for America’s strengths as a world power.

Democratic President F.D.R.’s careful exercising of America’s governmental powers also won World War II.

  • America’s greatest strength as a world power was during the 1940’s and 1950’s, when taxes were at their highest.

It’s a reality that anti-American right wingers like “quarterback” have been trying to falsify their entire lives.

  • Thanks very much for sharing this interesting post. I am just starting up my own blog and this has given me inspiration to what I can achieve.

  • Unemployment is tied to Dem control of congress: http://tinyurl.com/y8c5rqn

  • The DEMS have tooted their expertise for years now on how they know how to create jobs, and protect the poor.

It’s hard to do both when all you’re interested in is social engineering. That worked out great for the Soviet Union,Cuba, and anywhere else it has been tried.

It is time to drive all of these Plantation Owners out of DC, and yes I include Obama in that category.

All of these professional politicians are interested in is POWER and MONEY.

Get rid of the lot of them.

JOBS! JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!, not on your watch Madame Speaker.

  • I hope to god that none of you people vote.

  • Afghanistan escalation? Just focus on jobs. Job numbers disappointing? Look over here at healthcare for a minute.

  • Perfect article! I learn much of new informations Thx!Thank you!
