Be afraid, financial journalists. Be very, very afraid.

Media Matters, the well-known media watchdog, is unveiling a new site today called “Financial Media Matters,” which will track media coverage of the financial and business worlds, as well as news coverage of labor, economic and fiscal policy, a Media Matters official confirms to me.

The site, which will be announced this afternoon, reflects the sudden preoccupation that many on the left now have with the accuracy, balance, and fairness of financial coverage, now that the crisis has thrust all of our attention on the financial world. Witness the widespread liberal and public interest in the Rick Santelli rant on MSNBC and in Jon Stewart’s showdown with Jim Cramer.

Eric Burns, the president of Media Matters, put it this way in a statement sent my way:

“As people across the country struggle with losing their jobs, losing their homes, and losing their nest eggs, Americans are depending on the media — especially the financial media — for answers. We are launching Financial Media Matters because the public deserves accurate and honest reporting on what is happening and what is being done to fix the economic crisis.”
