MSNBC And Dems Agree: Sanford Destroyed By “GOP Curse Of 2012!”

In case you wondered what message Dems want us to take from the Mark Sanford mess, DNC spokesperson Hari Sevugan sends over an MSNBC graphic declaring the “GOP Curse of 2012.” Click to enlarge:

This, of course, won’t make it any tougher for Republicans to say that MSNBC is in the tank for Dems.

Either way, I don’t see why MSNBC is crossing Sarah Palin off the list — after all, she’s far and away more popular among Republicans than any other figure in the GOP. With Sanford and John Ensign falling like dominoes, Palin only grows stronger!

Update: Sanford admits: “I’ve been unfaithful to my wife.” Resigns as chairman of Republican Governors Association.

Update: Is Sanford really not stepping down as Governor?? Looks like he isn’t! As he wrapped up the presser, he didn’t respond to shouted questions about whether he’d resign.

Update: Sanford sends out a post-presser statement clarifying that, yes, he lied to his staff.

Are any repuglicans faithful to their wives, if they aren’t secretly gay? It seems a truism that the stronger they appear to be on “family values” the more likely they are to be ******** around.

From hiking to naked hiking to Argentina to cheating with a furinur. He is TOAST.

The Bobby Jindal volcano-monitoring curse strikes again!

I never thought that dropping out of sight was a particularly big deal.  Prolly shoulda told his Lt Gov, but it’s not as if the governor of a very unremarkable state is particularly indespensible or has to worry about those 3-a.m. phone calls!

Still, the optics are fun to watch.  It’s kinda like a Keystone Kops sideshow.

I got no sympathy for this guy. he confessed cause HE GOT CAUGHT!!!!
He was not confessing because it was heavy on his heart. He confessed because his lies caught up to him. I don’t care how much you cry. He cheated.

Now someone on MSNBC is trying to say he was brave. What woulda been brave was to RESIST the temptation to cheat…

Sorry this guy ain’t no different than John Edwards in my book

    Jon Huntsman isn’t cursed, he’s a GENIUS!
    Think about it:

    1. Have punditry talk up a nonextremist Republican as someone with a shot of winning the nomination.
    2. ???????????
    3. Become Ambassador to China.

    It worked!

Sanford assistant: What’s that Mr. Governor, did you say Argentina tail or Appalachian trail?

  11. OGLiberal | June 24th, 2009 at 03:10 pm

I’m not sure he confessed because he got caught. I mean, he did get caught but I think after the second or third day of his absence, he probably knew he was caught. In fact, he probably knew he was “caught” before he left so I don’t think he cared so much about getting caught. You can’t just leave like this when you are the chief executive of the state – Sanford is goofy but not that stupid. My guess is that all of the stuff about the Appalachian Trail and wanting to get away were a) lies his staff made up in his absence with no direction from him or b) stalling tactics to hold off the hounds while he prepped for a press conference he knew was inevitable. Based on his wife’s comments while he was “missing”, I’m almost certain she knew about this affair – as Sanford stated – or had very, very strong suspicions. My guess is that this affair went a lot further and became a lot more passionate than he expected when he originally dipped his toe into the waters of infidelity. So passionate that he lost all sense of responsibility and commonsense and irrationally jetted off to Argentina. Could be that his wife gave him a “end this now” ultimatum and he went there to try to end it but couldn’t, which is why he was there so long and only returned after people found him and told him, “You have to come back.” His infidelity is between him and his wife. But do you really want somebody this impulsive and irresponsible as the chief exec of your state? Do you want him as your party’s potential presidential nominee? He probably should resign as governor not because he had an affair but because he violated the trust of his state’s citizens and abandoned his responsibilities as governor when he just, well, up and left. I could do this if I were in a similar situation, although my employer might not be too happy about my last minute trip to another continent. You might even be able to get away with this if you are the mayor of a small town. But you can’t do it if you are governor of a state. You just can’t.

Of course, given the GOP’s base love of the dysfunctional and wacky Palin family, this may actually give him a boost in the 2012 GOP presidential nomination race.

I work out of my house, and I can’t believe that today of all days I went out to lunch and missed the Sanford presser. Highlights later will have to do.

  13. lamh31 | June 24th, 2009 at 03:46 pm

OGLiberal, I hear what you’re saying.

but look closely at the press conference. Did Sanford do anything other than admit the affair? Nope, and the big spin from Repubs and right blogosphere is that is was “really brave” of Sanford to be so frank. No it wasn’t brave. The controversy wasn’t about the affair, but the press conference was.

  14. Debra | June 24th, 2009 at 04:33 pm

Exactly. No mention of walking away from his duties as governor and being unreachable by the lt governor and his office. And does anybody really think it takes five days to end an affair? It may be over, but only after he realized he was caught by his wife and the media.

Leaving Huntsman aside for now, Romney is the wealthiest of the GOP’s 2012 wannabes. He certainly has the resources to sandbag his rivals. I wouldn’t be surprised if he “seeded” (forgive the paronomastic barbarism) the women who took down Ensign and Sanford. Jindal sabotaged himself, and Palin so far hasn’t outgrown her yokelish buffoonery. Gingrich won’t get out of the starting gate. Brilliant strategery, Mitt!

Ummm…you know the thing that bothers me about this the most…it was Father’s Day weekend for godssake…I mean we all know that there are multiple politicians that have had affairs and of course the hypocrisy of the GOP lecturing everyone on “traditional/family values” really gets under peoples skin when something like this comes out…but the thing that really disgusts me and speaks more to his character…is the fact that he went to be with his mistress over Father’s Day weekend…he couldn’t go have his “thing/spark” the coming up weekend, or the weekend after that? I mean we are right on the cusp of a holiday…how about spending July 4th weekend with her…it’s a slow news time anyway…but no, he leaves his four boys (I have three myself) fatherless on Father’s Day because he needs to clear his ****, I mean, his head!!! That speaks way more about his character than anything else I have seen on this story, so far at least…

This type of thing really doesn’t follow party lines – see: McGreavy, Edwards etc… it’s not the first & won’t be the last. What a bonehead.
