DNC Enters Health Care Fray, Hammers DeMint And Steele Over “Waterloo”
The White House’s allies are going on the offensive against Jim DeMint and Michael Steele over the claim that the failure of health care reform could be Obama’s “Waterloo,” a sign that Dems recognize the need to ratchet up the attacks and that they hope the “Waterloo” remark could be a game-changer in their favor.
The DNC blasted a new email to its list, weaving the “Waterloo” crack into a larger narrative about GOP efforts to defeat Obama’s entire agenda:
On Friday, GOP Senator Jim DeMint told a special-interest attack group that if they’re “able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.” And just this morning, Republican Chairman Michael Steele backed up DeMint’s statement 100%. At the same time, the Republican National Committee is running deceptive ads to scare Americans away from the reform we need.
Their plan is simple: oppose health care reform as a political ploy to weaken the President and defeat his entire agenda of change. But if we follow the Republican “Party of No” and do nothing, we’ll not only ensure more of the same, but saddle our children with a growing burden of exploding costs and declining care that they may never overcome.
We can’t let this kind of slash and burn politics succeed. We can fight back by collecting as many signatures as possible backing the President’s principles for health care reform. A huge response will show Washington and the media that when Republicans try to “break” the President, Americans are ready to stand up for what’s right.
This is kind of an inverse of the Republican “Waterloo” argument. The DNC’s suggesting that if health care reform tanks, it could be a “Waterloo” for Obama’s “entire agenda of change,” a way of scaring the troops into a massive show of push-back. Probably wouldn’t hurt if White House allies trained more firepower at Senators in their own party, though.

Good to see the dems taking the attack to the repubs as well as to the media, who are blatantly now shilling for the repubs. Time to paint the two in the same corner and with the same brush.
That hag on GMA went after Obama this morning which I really don’t mind if it were in regards to his policy. I would rather people challenge the President but she came across like she was trying to be an instigator and say Obama was trying to play politics when what she perceived was a difference of policy debate going on by DeMint. Obama tried to explain to her people like DeMint have no interest in fixing things and are only interested in sinking Obama so people remain in misery, at least that’s what I got out of what he was trying to say.
Mike, what happened on GMA exactly?
Just saw that…I’ll have to wait till I see it posted online or something to get exactly what happened. I was listening to it while I was shoving Fiber One down my throat, tying my shoes and forgetting I had a 1:30 meeting and making last minute arrangements with my other half. My wife gave me a recap and said Sawyer came across as a “B” though and someone else had to bring her back down to reality. In other words, her partisan side took over the interview.
But, what can you expect from Sawyer. This from her diary:
“Prior to joining CBS News, Sawyer held several positions in the Nixon administration. She was part of the Nixon-Ford transition team from 1974 to 1975. She also assisted former President Nixon in the writing of his memoirs in 1974 and 1975.”
Mike
That goes back to yesterday when Chip who I believe works for ABC also tried to say that it was President Obama and not DeMint who was playing politics with DeMint’s quote in the briefing with Gibbs. Somebody commented on it yesterday but I can’t remember who so I went and watched the briefing and sure enough Chip was carrying water for DeMint as if he was his spokesman or something. He even claimed that DeMint had a “plan” but when Gibbs pressed him on it and asked him what the plan Chip saidd something to the effect of “you know, a freedom loving plan”. I swear those folks are now acting like the GOP is paying their bills. Thats not holding anybody to account, that’s trying to frame the debate for one particular side.
I meant I think Chip works for CBS not ABC.
Wow, I meant Merridith Viera from Today, not Sawyer on GMA.
Haha. OK. Scratch what I said. I just watched the clip.
That’s the last time I get a recap from my wife and blog about it. Sorry bout that.
You pinkos sure are disingenuous. DeMint wants the Obama agenda to fail, thus the Waterloo comment. Your opponents are oppose Obama’s policies for the same reason you favor them: they are a socialist scheme to force the productive parts of society to pay for the winos, while at the same time growing the government (and government employee unions).
This is a policy difference: many of us think that that plan is a terrible idea. Many Democrats – but not all, see blue dogs – think that is a great idea, mainly because they are the party of organized government lobbying itself. I hope the Democratic party’s kidneys fail.

no prob mike…keep the tips comin’
Signatures . . . that’s the ticket!
The problem is that Obama is not selling reform the right way. He needs to tell people that his “plan” will guarantee health insurance for everyone even if they lose or switch jobs. He needs to pitch this as health care security, as Kaus has noted.
As far as Obama and Gibbs fighting with DeMint and Kristol? C’mon now! Let’s stay above the fray. Unseemly and simply a bad idea to get dragged down to your opponent’s level. Seems more like the same old politics rather than change.
Awww sbj I bet you are so dissappointed because you were just about to start supporting Pres Obama until he “attacked” Kristol and DeMint huh?
LMAO!
I think one thing that everyone can agree on is that we’d like to see politics change to something a bit more civil. I’m no Obama fan but if he could do something to accomplish that I’d give him credit. Sending your spokeshole out to attack Rush and DeMint and Kristol is not change and it should be beneath any admin.
sbj – How come you want Obama to make this change all by himself? Don’t Republicans get to be held accountable for the way they attack? Rebutting an attack is not attack. Or are you saying you are for appeasement?
You start by maintaining the dignity of the office by not engaging in *** for tats with radio DJs, columnists, or junior senators.
Hey sgwhiteinfla, how is your kidney health? Poor, I hope.
sgwhiteinfla,
Your reply to Frege is typical lefty silliness. He inadvertently left an extraneous word in his message. Does that really make you smarter than he is? Even despite the typos in your own response to Mike at 10:46?
A good idea,it just product news.

Barack Obama will never -I repeat NEVER- say to your face what he actually plans to do or achieve with these huge new government programs… like bankrupt the entire private health insurance industry.
Rather, you get some calculating and specious auditory with styrofoam props to wow the plebes, like the tacky Greek columns in Denver. To him, the revolutionary ends justify the Alinskyite means- so the Dear Leader just tells you whatever he needs to, he knows what’s best for you anyway.
And the truth is that Obama is out to nationalize health care.. they’ll be no private insurance industry left after five years of Obamacare… but of course he’s lying about it.
As for the American public, the reality that Obama is not up to the job seems to finally be setting-in; the poll numbers are now headed steadily south- is he already facing his Waterloo on this legislation?
Looks like it from where I’m standing…
