Grassley: Dems Pushing Climate Change May Not “Care” About Our Economy

Senator Chuck Grassley, initially the face of constructive GOP cooperation on health care, is not showing any pretense of bipartisan comity at the outset of the climate change debate, suggesting Obama and Dems may not “care” about the health of the U.S. economy.

Grassley made the claim on a conference call with Iowa reporters today. According to a transcript, Grassley was asked about efforts by Obama and Dems to push climate change legislation to build momentum heading into the Copenhagen talks next month.

“Their argument is maybe well intended, that, we pass a bill, the rest of the world will follow along, but if the rest of the world doesn’t follow along then we’re going to ruin our economy,” Grassley said. He added that he didn’t see any signs of “consideration” on the part of Obama and Dems that they “could be hurting your economy in the process.”

“And maybe they don’t care,” Grassley continued.

Grassley also was impatient with the idea that failure at next month’s talks could be blamed in any way on the U.S.

“You mean it’s not the failure of the People’s Assembly in China or the Parliament of India to pass laws cutting down on CO2, it’s only America’s fault, blame America first?” Grassley said.

Keep in mind that Dems spent months believing that Grassley could be cajoled into being a constructive partiner on health care before finally giving up. If this is where we are on climate change already, it’s going to be a long, long road ahead.

So in Grassley’s book, this is a big game of chicken, and he doesn’t care if we drive ourselves off a cliff.

At least there’s water on the moon. Phew.

Keep in mind that Dems Max Baucus spent months believing that Grassley could be cajoled into being a constructive partiner on health care before finally giving up.

    Fixed!

What is it with these people?

It’s not just him, Greg, when you have some of the most liberal senators in the country, including Feingold and Franken digging in against Climate Change, you know there’s little to no chance of passage: http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2009/11/coal-state-dems-protest-climate-bill

Tena/Kathleen I left you guys a reply on the Twilight, um sorry the Edwards thread below. ;-)

On topic. I loathe this guy. Isn’t there a Dem in Iowa that can take him?

  6. Tena | November 17th, 2009 at 05:04 pm

    Ifo – read it.

I left another comment at the end of the thread.

    lol

O, the GOP is going to fight climate change next about as hard as they fought health care reform. We might as well just face that – look at the money that is at stake; look at how long Big Oil has had a major hand in running this country.

  7. Ethan | November 17th, 2009 at 05:06 pm

This is why Grassley is so insanely stupid:

“For the cost of about a postage stamp a day, all American families will see a return on their investment as our nation breaks our dependence on foreign oil, cuts dangerous carbon pollution and creates millions of new clean-energy jobs that can’t be shipped overseas”

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/jun/25/edward-markey/claims-cbo-predicts-cap-and-trade-will-cost-about-/

So basically, make sure to turn off your lights when you leave a room and your share of climate change legislation is paid for.

Someone please help educate me. I understand the debate over Climate Change…and that people who believe in climate change attribute much of it to carbon emissions and the release of other such things as freon(which I believed is now very tightly controlled) into our atmosphere.

What I don’t understand is how a clear thinking person…(that of course does exempt Grandpa Grassley) cannot believe reducing carbon emissions is a GREAT thing?

For those who believe in climate change…that’s obviously desirable…for those who don’t..there is still the evidence of all that **** in the air and what it does to things like our lungs etc. It’s not just LA either…when I fly back to visit my birthplace Cincinnati…if it’s during the summer the city of seven hills by the Ohio River is covered by a noxious brown dome of horrid air…where did that come from? Flatulent cows?

Regardless of one’s belief or disbelief in climate change doesn’t common sense tell us releasing toxic chemicals into our atmosphere in HUGE quantities is not just bad for the planet…it’s bad for us!!!

  9. Liam | November 17th, 2009 at 05:07 pm

If the Climate Change Experts turn out to be wrong, then we will all still survive on a healthy planet.

If the Climate Change skeptics, get their way, and they turn out to be wrong, then the planet will be devastated, and so will most of civilization.

Those Republicans are not Conservatives, as in; take no reckless gambles that could end up in ruination. They are just a shower if Insane, Bill Bennett like, reckless gamblers.

“how a clear thinking person…(that of course does exempt Grandpa Grassley) cannot believe reducing carbon emissions is a GREAT thing?”

    Two words: Corporate Lobbying

    “Someone please help educate me.”

I wish I could, but first someone is going to have to tell me how all the suburban soccer moms can get upset over the air pollution in Dallas Co. and what it’s doing to their kids, and turn around and vote Repug and re-elect Joe Barton, who has spent his Congressional career protecting the polluters. And that isn’t a secret about Joe.

    Splain that one to me.

LFO, thanks. And I’m going to check out Yoox, thanks, Tena.

Chris A said: “when you have some of the most liberal senators in the country, including Feingold and Franken digging in against Climate Change, you know there’s little to no chance of passage”

I disagree with that last bit. Included among the signatories is Sherrod Brown — a guy who got elected on the promise of green jobs and sustainable energy.

He/they may be disputing one aspect of a bill, but imho there’s no way this signifies that Dems would kill the bill.

  14. Tena | November 17th, 2009 at 05:23 pm

Kathleen- last spring on yoox, I bought a brand new Alexander McQueen scarf that I’d seen at full price for $375, and I wasn’t about to pay that, for $150.

    It’s so mine.

And it’s so awesome. I really recommend yoox. The inventory is endless, you’ll find.

  15. rukidding | November 17th, 2009 at 05:23 pm

    @Ethan…”Two words: Corporate Lobbying”
I suspect you are correct…alas as always it comes down to follow the money!

  16. Tena | November 17th, 2009 at 05:27 pm

“alas as always it comes down to follow the money!”

that’s what I was sayin. The GOP will fight climate change legislation tooth and nail on behalf of the oil companies, among others.

That’s already come and gone in the crystal ball. The greasyroots are already to go – they heckled Vice President Gore, already.

  17. Tena | November 17th, 2009 at 05:28 pm

…that first already was supposed to just be ready.

    sigh

Tena I read your reply on the other thread. :-)
What I cannot wait for–heads exploding in Republican land on an *election year* over immigration reform. i think doing that is absolutely brilliant.

Greg, can you stop hosting the TV guide pop-out ad? The thing has audio, expands over the whole window, and I couldn’t find a way to close it or shut if off which forced me to close and reopen your tab. You’re lucky I love you enough to do that.

  20. Tena | November 17th, 2009 at 05:30 pm

    …in the last sentence.

    heavysigh

    Me too also.

Hate the thing, am ready to do bad things to it and not fun bad things.

    Do they?

    Sure.

I’ll believe that when I see it.

Last I checked, Democrats govern America, not China. Maybe its just me but it seems more productive to initiate laws in ones own country, but like I said, thats just me.

Grassley must think he’s in the Chinese Senate… wait… GRASSLEY IS A COMMUNIST.

Shorter Grassley: America isn’t the leader of the free world anymore… because we don’t want to be.

Me: Republicans Denying Climate Change May Not “Care” About Our Planet.

Republicans don’t care how the drastic climate change they are denying might change weather patterns in ways that will damage America’s bread-basket in the midwest, may drown coastal cities, and leave millions homeless.

  33. News Reference | November 17th, 2009 at 09:53 pm

Seriously, how stupid can Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley be?

Nobody knows how radical climate change will affect the growing patterns of midwest states like Iowa.

We know that the current weather patterns are good for Iowa.

But short-sighted old fools like Republican Grassley are ready to gamble his entire states major industry (agriculture) on his 19th century idiotologically fanatic misunderstanding of climate change.

Iowans need to figure out that Republican Grassley is BAD for Iowa and vote the guy out.

  34. Clay Barham | November 18th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

The good news is they have yet to get around to the biggest greenhouse gas of all, that one lighter-than-air component that really acts as a blanket to keep the sun’s radiant heat trapped in the earth. Most exhaust stacks, including internal combustion engines, spew out this gas in large volumes, dwarfing carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide and even nitrogen for its impact on the environment. It’s awful! If we didn’t have to contend with it, we could be much happier living on a bone dry planet. claysamerica.com
