The Showdown Begins! Specter And Sestak Set To Hold First Joint Candidate Forum — At Netroots Nation

Senator Arlen Specter and primary challenger Joe Sestak have both agreed to hold a joint candidate forum next month, I’ve learned, their first joint appearance since Sestak committed to the Senate race and a sign that this hotly anticipated Senate campaign is rapidly becoming a reality.

Making the joint appearance more interesting, it’s set to take place on August 14th at Netroots Nation, an unlikely forum for Specter given his decades as a Republican, meaning the event will pique intense blogospheric interest.

A Netroots Nation organizer forwards me an email announcing the event that’s set to go out later today. “Rep. Sestak and Sen. Specter will each participate in an interactive session moderated by Pennsylvania blogger Susie Madrak and The Nation’s Ari Melber,” the email says, adding that “each participant will be asked questions solicited online in advance, as well as from the audience.”

Specter’s campaign manager, Christopher Nicholas, confirmed to me that his boss is set to attend. “The Senator is looking forward to it,” Nicholas said.

Specter’s willingness to brave the precincts of Netroots Nation with netroots hero Sestak underscores how seriously Specter takes Specter’s underdog challenge. Given that Specter has the backing of the White House and the Democratic establishment, his scheduled appearance is also a sign that even the most established incumbent can no longer risk taking netroots-backed challengers for granted.

    O dear, this just gives Chuck Todd more ammo to blame the blogs for insane stories in the media that didn’t start on the blogs.

    Man, what the hell happened to Chuck Todd? Sheez.

    Greg-
    Sestak should not be in a candidates forum unless he actually gets off the pot and files his papers to officially enter the race. Also, Bill Kortz should be part of the forum, since he is actually a candidate.

    @Tena Chuck Todd was promoted beyond his abilities. He is/was a great numbers guy for MSNBC during the election. He is just awful in his current role. We all gave him too much credit.

    Trinity – Sad, but true, I think.

    Greg:  … their first joint appearance since Sestak committed to the Senate race …

    So Sestak has committed to the Senate race?  I must have missed that breaking news.  I thought he was still stuck at the “I have every intention of announcing my candidacy Real Soon Now” stage.

    Are we sure that Sestak is a “netroots” hero? Aside from people considering him as a better option than Specter for obvious reasons I will say that I know quite a few progressives who aren’t all that impressed with him.

    Greg, it’s not a joint forum. It’s back to back.

    @sgwhiteinfla:
    Netroots doesn’t necessarily mean left-wing/progressive. Jon Tester was a “netroots” candidate, and he sure as hell isn’t a leftist.

    I have seen them run three very similar articles on the IPhone since it was first announced last month. How many articles are they going to run saying the exact same thing? Its all about how the IPhone costs you more in the long run, yadda yadda yadda.

    I’ve got an iphone 3G 16gb and something terrible happened to it. My phone fell of the toilet bowl and it doesn’t function anymore. My phone is still under warranty. I’m planning to bring it to the Genius bar to get it replaced. My question is how much do I have to pay to get it replaced. I live in Australia so I wanna know the price in AUD. Will the apple store replace my phone that has been damaged by water? or will they just fix it?
