Poll Suggests Virginia Gov Race Not A Referendum On Obama At All

There’s been a fair amount of punditry of late to the effect that the Virginia governor’s race is shaping up as a big referendum on Obama’s presidency. If GOPer Bob McDonnell wins, lots of people in DC will be eager to claim that Obama is one of the race’s Biggest Losers.

But the internals of the new Washington Post poll in Virginia suggest that Obama may not really be an important factor at all. It finds:

* Seventy percent of likely voters say Obama is “not a factor” in ther choice. Only 15% say opposition to Obama is a factor, while 14%, say support for him is a factor.

* Seventy one percent say it makes “no difference” if the governor is from the same political party as the president. More people say it’s good to have a governor from the same party, 16%-13%.

* Obama’s approval rating in Virginia is 54%, in line with many national polls.

McDonnell is leading in this poll by 11 points, and if he wins, there will be a dull roar of commentary about what this means for Obama and his presidency. Obama has inserted himself into the race, and perhaps he’s more of an influence than these numbers suggest. Still, it’s unclear how you square these numbers with the notion that Obama is a major factor in any way.

Awww, Greg. Don’t spoil all the fun the villagers will have delcaring Obama’s Presidency over, with facts and logic.

What in the world are you thinking?

  2. Paul W. | October 27th, 2009 at 08:40 am

Creigh Deeds didn’t show up to win, and (as his shoot down of the PO showed just last week) he doesn’t know where is base is at. Talking about transportation may be a good, neutral topic but it does not inflame the hearts of your supporters.

“McDonnell is leading in this poll by 11 points, and if he wins, there will be a dull roar of commentary about what this means for Obama and his presidency.”

Greg…perhaps a dull roar in the MSM…but they’ll be pounding it to death on Fauz News…Limbaugh will certainly run with it…although he apparently doesn’t need any REAL news to fuel his hateful fans…he can always go to any satirical website and pick up whatever and present it as truth.

  4. amk | October 27th, 2009 at 08:43 am

Deeds is screwed if he continues to act stupidly like a wannabe repub like he is doing on PO, climate control etc. Why would VAians choose him over “real mccoy mcdonnell” ?

And yes, the media would be on a 24/7 disgusting chant of Obama is doomed if Deeds loses, never mind the facts.

And race which is won by a Republican/conservative will be, ipso facto, a deeply negative referendum on Obama’s moves to rebuild America according to Marxist principles.

Any race which is won by a Democrat/liberal will be, ipso facto, a deeply negative referendum on Obama’s moves to rebuild America according to fascist principles but which has been fraudently thwarted by Acorn.

Wayyyyy OT, but what the heck… from Haaretz today..

“The pro-Israel lobby J Street kicked off its first national conference on Sunday with more than 1,500 guests at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C. Despite controversy and tension surrounding the convention, organizers said the attendance exceeded expectations.

Numerous peace activists, politicians, diplomats, lobbyists, male and female rabbis, political advisers, artists, students and journalists filled the halls. Participants who spilled out from over-crowded panel rooms sat in a circle on the lobby carpet, heatedly discussing the state of left-wing activists in Israel and the United States, religion and the new media.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled,” said J Street executive director Jeremy Ben-Ami. “The numbers of participants far exceeded our expectations – 148 congressmen supported the event, 250 students and reporters from 17 countries came. This is truly the birth of a movement. It demonstrates the vacuum and the desire to promote peace now, when it’s more urgent than ever… Our vision for peace is very clear – two states based on ‘67.”

Yes, indeed, the media has always been eager to take Obama down.

Obama has repeatedly said that his goal is to “remake” America and effect “fundamental change.” Upon what sort of principles is America to be remade?

  8. quarterback | October 27th, 2009 at 09:09 am

It would clearly be nutty right-wing media partisanship to try to hang these off-year elections in NJ and Virginia around the President’s neck.

    quarterhack

Just so we can get you on record here, are you saying right now that the Governors race in NJ is also going to be a referrendum on whether American’s agree with President Obama? A yes or no will suffice.

  11. quarterback | October 27th, 2009 at 09:13 am

The point would be obvious if you removed your blinders.

  12. quarterback | October 27th, 2009 at 09:17 am

    stupininfla,

I am saying some folks here are paranoid conspiratorialists with selective — indeed monomaniacal — memories. What else would explain some of this tripe like Bernie’s?

  13. sgwhiteinfla | October 27th, 2009 at 09:18 am

By the by Creigh Deeds brought this all on himself. He listened to hacktackular pundits who keep saying this is a “center right” country and how President Obama was doing too much too fast and felt he had to try to run to the middle. The funny thing is McDonnell has d@mn near painted himself as more of a Democrat than Deeds.

Here is the metric people should keep in mind. Two Governors races had the Democrat behind by pretty good margins this spring/summer. One Governor ran to Obama setting up as many photo ops and campaign events as possible with the President and pretty much endorsed everything President has done so far or is trying to do. The other candidate for Governor tried to break with the President on several issues waited till very late in the game to try to set up some campaign events and tried to look as “centrist” ie “Republican” as humanly possible.

    The results don’t lie.

And Deeds ain’t gonna get the turnout he needs to win that race by trying his best to look like Ben Nelson or Joe Lieberman. That should be a lesson for every Democrat running in the next two years. You won’t go wrong hugging President Obama, and that’s real.

  14. sgwhiteinfla | October 27th, 2009 at 09:18 am

So quarterhack is that a yes or a no?

  15. Jax | October 27th, 2009 at 09:21 am

The blinders are removed. Ok, its still a stupid argument.

  16. quarterback | October 27th, 2009 at 09:22 am

    stupidinfla,

That is a pathetic, result-driven “analysis” if ever one were constructed. The nature of political races is that they close toward the end. Not always, but usually. They are two different states with very different issues affecting the races. Your inane “analysis” has the Dem candidates’ polling moving opposite Obama’s. Makes a lot of sense — in topsy-turvy liberal fantasyland.

  17. sgwhiteinfla | October 27th, 2009 at 09:26 am

So quarterhack is that a yes or a no. And by the way quarterhack I gave that results based “analysis” weeks ago before Corzine ever moved in front of Christie in the polling.

But are you willing to say that the NJ race is a referendum on whether Americans like President Obama? Yes or no?

For me to be interested in a candidate and get out there on the streets the guy has to get my interest.

Deeds failed to get my interest from the start. Yeah, the negative campaigning was a turn off for me. He started that from the start.

    But.

I still won’t vote for McDonnell. VA is the #1 place to have a business the last four years. We have fairly low unemployment. Very well paying jobs. Some of the nations best schools. This was all accomplished under Democratic leadership in the Governors house. Much of it had to do no doubt with Mark Warner. Kaine was fortunate to have benefited from Warner putting this state back together.

McDonnell will reap the benefit from the economy turning around since a sound system is already in place. My concern about McDonnell is he might cut back on school funding and he wants to do idiotic things like widen 66 inside the beltway which will never happen. He’s also claiming to want to get metro out to Dulles which is already being worked on.

    The guys a dud.

But Deeds, he’s completely inspirational. And, why would I campaign for a guy that runs from the leader of the Democratic party and the President of the U.S. I mean heck, VA didn’t go blue because they were concerned about what Obama had to say. They liked what he had to say.

    Everybody see this?

Poll: Big Majority Of Americans Support Cap-And-Trade
A new CNN poll finds 60% of Americans supporting a cap-and-trade proposal to control carbon emissions, with only 37% against it. The pollster’s analysis says that independents are environmentally conscious, but Democrats would still have to work to mobilize those concerns: “Independents may not be red or blue, but they appear to be green. Earlier polls indicate that Independents believe in global warming and believe that the government can take steps to curtail the problem. But the environment is not a big priority for Independents, as it is with Democrats.”

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/10/27/cnn-poll-6-in-10-back-cap-and-trade/

    OT:

MSNBC currently shilling a protest against banks by something called National People’s Action, showing video with favorable, supportive commentary by Dylan Ratigan.

Yesterday it was being said here that Fox is non-news propoganda because it gave air to tea parties and town halls. It was asserted by folks here that legitimate “news” outlets like MSNBC “never” ever do such things — which was a ridiculous generalization and obviously untrue.

  45. quarterback | October 27th, 2009 at 10:11 am

Here is the CNN poll question:

“Under a proposal called “cap and trade,” the federal government would limit the amount of greenhouse
gases that companies could produce in their factories or power plants. If companies exceeded those
limits, they would either pay a fine or pay money to other companies that produced smaller amounts of
greenhouse gases. Would you favor or oppose this proposal?”

The issue is presented as cost free to the public and an imposition only on “companies.” Big surprise. Give them some information about how much it will cost (a lot) for what actual benefit (nil) and see what they say.

  46. Ethan | October 27th, 2009 at 10:12 am

Obama to Boost Smart Grid with $3.4bn Grant

The grant marks the largest award made in a single day from the $787bn stimulus package approved by Congress, writes Reuters.

The move will also create tens of thousands of jobs while upgrading the US electric grid, according to administration officials.”

It is very clear that the reason why the Democrat is going to lose the race for Gov. in Virginia is: Because President Obama did not get the Olympic Games for Chicago in 2016. No, wait a moment; The real reason why the Democrat is losing is because President Obama was awarded The Nobel Peace Prize.

On the other hand; it is very clear that the main reason that The Republican is going to win in Virginia is: Because Rush Limbaugh was not allowed to become a minority partner in the purchase of an NFL Football team. Did I hear someone say: “The Ego Has Landed”?

I watched a meeting early on in this administration with Chu, Gore, Salizar, Pickens and about 10 others regarding plans for the smart grid upgrades.

They’ve ironed out I believe some of the major drawbacks and standards they will have to put into place to begin the work of interconnecting modern energy plants to wind farms, solar farms and other alternate energy sources along with current ones with a system that will allow for more competitive sell back pricing that will allow individuals to create their own energy via solar, wind and what ever resources they have to sell back to the local energy providers.

It all sounds pretty interesting. I imagine some people who have the space will get pretty inventive to create their own energy.

One energy source I was hoping they would invest in heavily was using cow manure methane as an energy source. To set up a system at a dairy farm costs about one million dollars and they generate more than enough energy to run the farm.

    Time are a changin’.

“to begin the work of interconnecting modern energy plants to wind farms, solar farms and other alternate energy sources”

Terminology-wise, that’s called Distributed Energy production.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_generation#Distributed_energy_resources

“One energy source I was hoping they would invest in heavily was using cow manure methane as an energy source”

That uses a process called Anaerobic Digestion… Take the organic matter, put it in a closed system, bacteria break down organic matter and produce methane. The methane can be burned to produce heat or turn a turbine to create electricity. Typically, livestock waste is put in open pools where the methane is released into the atmosphere and contaminants enter the water table. Anaerobic digestion is GREAT for farms and just as good for municipal waste. In both cases they mitigate an environmental problem while adding a whole new revenue stream for the farm or city/town. It’s really great stuff. People have been harvesting methane from animal waste pretty much since the domestication of livestock. Thousands of years….

    Greg,

This race may or may not be a referendum on Obama but the fact that the GOP will likely take all three state races by double-digits and grow its house of delegates margin by 4-8 votes is a pretty good referendum on what the voters of the Commonwealth think about democrat leadership. Let’s put it this way, I wouldn’t want to be a first-term democrat running for reelection in 2010 in a district that went for Bush in 2008.
