Plouffe Was Right: Edwards Camp Did Offer Secret Veep Deal, Adviser Says
David Plouffe’s claim in his new book on Campaign 2008 that the Edwards camp suggested he be made Veep in exchange for dropping out of the race is accurate, the Edwards adviser who had the conversation with Plouffe tells me.
As you know, Plouffe’s book offers the fascinating revelation that just before the South Carolina primary, a senior Edwards adviser offered him a swap: Edwards would drop out of the race if Obama would make him his Veep. The adviser argued that this was the only way to stop Hillary.
In emails to me, top Edwards campaign guru Joe Trippi said he had no knowledge of the claim. But I’ve now spoken to the Edwards adviser who had this conversation directly with Plouffe, and he confirmed it.
“Plouffe’s account is accurate,” the adviser, who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations, tells me. “We had conversations about the possibility of combining the campaigns into a ticket. The way he wrote it is right. His description is entirely accurate.”
In his account, Plouffe went on to write that Obama shot down the offer of a deal.
The Edwards adviser explained Trippi’s denial by saying Trippi may well not have known about the discussion. “It’s quite possible Joe was not aware of these conversations,” the adviser said.
So now we know.

Pretty interesting tid bit of info there.
John Edwards is a giant POS!
I will never forgive him. Never. He could have crucified our chances. He could have gotten McCain-Palin elected and then it would have been a disaster we’d never recover from economically.
Really Greg.
Another thread on this? You could have just added it to the previous one. It is not as if Edwards is of any great importance any more.
JE is a bit of an egomaniac eh?
That would have been devastating for the party for a long long time if he were chosen.
Liam — the only way to get any pickup or attention for a piece of news in today’s Internet culture is for it to be in the headline.
Otherwise it gets lost. Simple fact of life.
Actually Liam, I think this is good. Edwards keeps looking for a way back in and some people want to support that effort.
I do not want Edwards anywhere within a hundred miles of the Democratic Party.
I thought I read that Elizabeth was finally going to divorce John.
I don’t think much of her, either, going out to plead for the man who just cheated on her and hid behind her skirts when he got caught. And she let him.
He is a cad and coward in addition to everything else.
Well, to each their own. I see Edwards as someone who is not worth wasting time on, while we have a potential quagmire in Afghanistan to deal with, and health care reform, and immigration reform, and human rights for all our people, and a jobless recovery underway. But that is just me. Like I said, to each their own.
Have a good day all.
We should all be very grateful that Obama had the sense to walk away from that deal. It might have ushered McCain and the Tundra Twit to victory.
Had Obama’s campaign heard rumors about Edwards’ affair? Maybe this was a desperate move by Edwards to try and stay in the major league. Did he think it would be easier to weather the storm if he were merely a candidate for V.P. instead of P.?
I’d take a Sen. Edwards right now over Sens. Lieberman, Landrieu, Lincoln and Nelson. He’s not history’s greatest monster, although he is a dope.
“He’s not history’s greatest monster, although he is a dope.”
He isn’t but he let his ambition override any thought for the country or the Democrats and almost precipitated a major disaster.
This is just about as interesting as JE. For all the closet Twilight fans, New Moon trailer.

I’m disappointed that Liam the Liar has left for the day without my having the chance to call him on the carpet for serial lying about the supposed failure or the Bush Admin to “do anything” with KSM. They only held interrogated him with great success over a significant period of time, getting terrific intelligence information, and began military prosecution in early 2008. To Liam, this is “nothing.”
Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.
If it wasn’t Trippi, then it was Jonathan Prince.
Imsinca – I know there are people who are fanatics about Twilight.
I am hooked totally on True Blood – but HBO is a different experience – you get all kinds of full frontal nudity and vampire *** on True Blood.
vampire s*e*x
grrrrrrr
I like True Blood also, but my granddaughter is not allowed to watch it. She’s going to opening of New Moon though and is soooo excited. I actually read all the books in the series to see what she was reading, just in case.
Obama is one smart guy who spotted this phony from a mile away. I’m sorry to say I didn’t, Edwards was my first choice in ‘04.
And, I agree with you on a lot, Liam, but the more threads the better, as far as I’m concerned. It’s not like Edwards was awarded an audience with the Pope.
“but my granddaughter is not allowed to watch i”
Of course not!
I have friend whose daughter is 13 and she is so into Twilight. I wouldn’t mind reading the books.
Here’s a fun fact – the woman who wrote the Sookie Stackhouse series that True Blood is taken from – went to college in Memphis with Mr. Tena.
“I’m sorry to say I didn’t, Edwards was my first choice in ‘04.”
Me too. He was really popular in Texas and across the south he seemed to be the candidate who could do it in ‘04.
We were doomed in ‘04. Rove sewed that one up in Ohio. That election turned the other way at precisely 9 PM Central Standard Time, right as Ohio reported. And Rove had already called a number of journalists and told them to hold off on saying Kerry was ahead because “things were going to change.”
You know who reported that? Not the liberal media – it was that woman reporter, Bumiller – a good friend of Rove’s. She didn’t know what she’d reported.
In other entertainment news, the big retailers are slashing the price of Palin’s book. It’s selling as low as $4.97 and just under $9.00 elsewhere, such as Amazon, Walmart and Target.

God I love my life and I love you for posted that and for other general reasons. lol
posting
o god for an edit feature. And then for the discipline to use it.
Elisabeth Bumiller is a good friend of Rove’s? Ewwww.
In Twilight biz, NYMag has an article on Twilight Mom Phenom.

“Elisabeth Bumiller is a good friend of Rove’s? Ewwww.”
I keep wanting to call her Bertha Bumiller cause that’s a character in Tuna, Texas = the plays.
If not a friend, at least she was a major Bush cheerleader. Rove called her that night and she was so excited about the whole thing the next day she wrote that article and I thought – well, now I know why I started crying when the whole thing went south in about 5 seconds flat.
Kathleen, my 27 year old daughter with two science degrees is going with the 40 something wife of her academic advisor, one of the geology professors, and a couple of graduate students to see it this weekend. None of them would admit to reading the books until one of them got caught off campus at Starbuck’s reading one and the floodgates opened.
Looks like we succeeded in chasing all the guys away, we’ll have to remember this strategy for later.
I’m sorry, John Edwards? Who is this? Why is this news? The only John Edwards I know of is a cheating, lying, sob who didn’t think about anyone but himself, and as such deserves no more attention from anyone. He could drop dead for all I care.
Yeah Greg, I’m a frequent reader as you know, and I really don’t see the point for another post about this. I’m sure all kinds of deals were cut in the primary and the general. But from the sound of it, this particular offer never made it very far. It didn’t happen. It didn’t come close to happening.
lmsinca, that is too funny! I haven’t read them yet, I need time to just lose myself in a book; everybody I know who has read them says you can’t put them down.
I did see Twilight on video, and I will have no shame going to see New Moon. But first it’s Coco Before Chanel tomorrow night!
Maybe all of you are in another thread already but I hope Tena and lmsince are still here. I read all of the Twilight books on my iphone while visiting my very sick grandmother this summer. They were great entertainment, even when I found myself annoyed at certain developments in book 2 and 3 (I really do not see the appeal of jacob). The funny thing is that the whole abstinence theme comes out ok in the book because of the supernatural angle, otherwise it wouldn’t have worked I think. So glad to know I am not the only one paying attention to twilight. Better than Palin obsession this week no?
PS Tena–thanks for the yoox rec. I already used it to buy my mom a Cavalli blouse.
and Kathleen who was also in the twilight debate.
lfo
Yeah they were an entertaining read and I even had Edward as my background for about a month, unfortunately my granddaughter is in Club Jacob. HaHa
“I already used it to buy my mom a Cavalli blouse.”
Yay!
I’m going to read those books and the Sookie STackhouse Chronicles.
My husband cannot for the life of him see how True Blood can continue after the first season because it was so wild. Silly man.
Tena I have read botht and the vibe is totally different. But I think both are fun and worth it to pass the time.
I love True Blood and the 2nd season was good but I wanted to see more of Vampire Bill.
It’s possible that some kind of deal was made between the Edwards campaign and the Obama camp early on as these two functioned in tag team to attack Clinton. A position was promised to Edwards and that’s why he endorsed Obama. Unfortunately, after the scandal blew up in his face, Edwards became persona non grata.
Thank GOD Barack Obama DIDN’T CONSIDER making John (an immoral creep who still denies his daughter)Edwards anything but a passing fancypants.
I was just looking for relevant site posts for my assignment research and I happened to stumble upon yours. Thanks for the beneficial material!
Hi, first I want to say nice blog. I don’t always agree with your opinion but it’s always a nice read.
Keep up the nice blogging.
