Female GOP Candidate Hits Boxer For Wanting To Be Called “Senator”

Fun times out in California: Carly Fiorina, the businesswoman who hopes to be the GOP challenger to Senator Barbara Boxer next year, has unveiled a new attack line:

She’s faulting Boxer for wanting to be called “Senator,” not “ma’am,” hitting Boxer with a new Web ad and a new Website devoted entirely to this criticism.

It’s a reference to a widely-noted exchange Boxer had earlier this year with a Brigadier General at a hearing. After he called her “ma’am,” Boxer rejoined: “Do me a favor, could you say `Senator,’ instead of `ma’am’? It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title.”

You can watch that exchange right here, on the Fiorina campaign’s new Web site devoted to this line of criticism, CallMeBarbara.com. And here’s Fiorina’s new Web ad, running on sites like Drudge, hitting Boxer on this:

boxerhit

In a statement accompanying the release of the new site and ad, the Fiorina campaign blasted the exchange as a sign of Boxer’s “egotistical style.”

It’s true that the exchange didn’t reflect particularly well on Boxer. But hitting her for wanting to be called “Senator” perhaps doesn’t reflect that well on Fiorina, either. After all, this doesn’t seem like the most pressing concern of voters. What’s more, Fiorina is an accomplished woman in her own right.

Update: I totally forgot to credit Jessica Wakeman for this catch.

Hopefully she’s got more up her sleeve than that! If she doesn’t she’ll go down in CA political history as one of the biggest jokes in all of the CA Senate campaigns.

Haven’t heard any radio ads for Carly yet here in the SF-Bay area, but Meg Whitman has been buying a lot of air time.  From a gestalt perspective, those ads have seemed pretty good.  (I mean, fact checking and bullshіt detecting notwithstanding).

  3. jzap | November 10th, 2009 at 01:03 pm

Uh, context note:  Meg Whitman is running for CA Governor in 2010.  The Governator has term-limited out.  Jerry Brown is likely to be the Dem candidate.

What idiot came up with this line of attack? Now the Republicans are draping themselves in the cloak of their own political correctness? If you are talking to a member of the armed forces and wish to emphasize that you are coming from a position of power, instead of mere courtesy, then why wouldn’t you want to be called Senator? This is a non-starter, and so far the two GOP gals in Cali have proven dramatically underwhelming.

“After all, this doesn’t seem like the most pressing concern of voters.”

Neither is health insurance for the uninsured!

But more to the point, don’t you think Fiorina is simply starting out by attacking Boxer’s character? Plenty of time to hit her on issues later but the first order of business is defining Boxer’s character.

  6. amk | November 10th, 2009 at 01:12 pm

“What’s more, Fiorina is an accomplished woman in her own right.”

Greg, you left out the snark tags.

  7. Tena | November 10th, 2009 at 01:12 pm

See, some people didn’t like it when Hilary got annoyed in China because she thought her position wasn’t getting the respect it commands. I loved it when she whipped those earphones off and said: They want to know WHAT?

I don’t necessarily think Boxer was out of line, either.

“! If she doesn’t she’ll go down in CA political history as one of the biggest jokes in all of the CA Senate campaigns.”

This is what I hope to see.

  8. Tena | November 10th, 2009 at 01:12 pm

Not China – Africa. I don’t know where that came from.

    Damn rented finners….

Word is Fiorina’s going to be “Scozzafavaed” anyway. The Tea Party had a new target with a “conservative” waiting in the wings that just fits their profile to a “tea”. I’ll search for the link so you can real all about him.

  10. lmsinca | November 10th, 2009 at 01:13 pm

    uggh-read all about him

    Here it is, Chuck DeVore.

“One of the next great conservative hopes seems likely to be a California Republican who has already taken on Senate Republicans, has ties to birthers and tea-partiers and is virtually unknown by the mainstream media establishment.”

HP reporting Anita Dunn, the WH Communications Director, is stepping down and Dan Pfeiffer will take over.

    Damn, I liked Dunn. ;)

    @Greg

“It’s true that the exchange didn’t reflect particularly well on Boxer.”

How’s that? If anything, I would think that this would HELP Sen. Boxer with female voters.

  14. Benton | November 10th, 2009 at 01:29 pm

And what is Failed Fiorina’s “character”?

She was a complete and utter FAILURE as a business “executive,” nearly running HP into the ground before they tossed her out on her pampered, overpaid asss, and also an incoherent, cringe-producing gaffe machine on the trail for McLame last year, before the campaign told her to go home and shut the hell up.

Oh yeah, Carly. We got your “character attacks” right here.

  15. Greg Sargent | November 10th, 2009 at 01:30 pm

BBQ — maybe you’re right. It felt off tone wise to me. But I could def be wrong.

  16. amk | November 10th, 2009 at 01:32 pm

BBQ – Some times Greg can be pretty obtuse. If this is all that carly woman got, she is toast. Wasn’t she kicked out of mccain campaign for being “bad” for them ? This from a badly run campaign team too. ’nuff said.

  17. Tena | November 10th, 2009 at 01:36 pm

“How’s that? If anything, I would think that this would HELP Sen. Boxer with female voters.”

Hey thanks – that’s just how I see it.

Nevermind Greg- he’s such a guy.

    ;)

“AMA Calls for Review of Medical Marijuana’s Legal Status

In a move considered historic by supporters of medical marijuana, the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates today adopted a new policy position calling for the review of marijuana’s status as a Schedule I drug in the federal Controlled Substances Act. The old language in Policy H-95.952 had previously recommended that “marijuana be retained in Schedule I,” which groups marijuana with drugs such as heroin, LSD and PCP that are deemed to have no accepted medical uses and to be unsafe for use even under medical supervision.”

Incremental “change I can believe in” ?

I am in heaven. I just love it that the country is trying to grow up and be real about this and I think we’re going to make it. If the federal government relents, the states will turn, probably some immediately, and others one by one. And those that don’t – you can’t tell me the cops in those states are going to act like they give a damn. They barely do now, frankly.

Yeah, it’s only a source of medicine, a source of renewable fiber, a source of renewable energy, and the seeds are the most complete form of nutrition found in nature……. But DAMN THEM HIPPIES for their mild intoxicants!!!

  21. Paul W. | November 10th, 2009 at 01:53 pm

Apartments and even streets in NYC reek of that stuff, and we don’t even have the open medical dispensary atmosphere that California has. Cops here know that there are better things spend time and money on, belligerent drinkers are more dangerous anyway.

  22. Winski | November 10th, 2009 at 02:19 pm

When I worked in Silicon Valley for a while and occasionally got to fly overseas, the company would provide a car to take me to the airport from our headquarters in Milpitas. One Saturday I was heading to SFO to catch a flight to Europe and just happened to get this very kind, older driver – well groomed and kept, great personality after you got him to open up but hard to approach at first because he was the ‘normal’ driver for Carly when she was at HP. He happened to be doing a Saturday tour for one of his family members who was away that weekend and random chance brought us together.

Some of the things that were shared on that Saturday in that limo between myself and Carly’s regular limo driver were ugly. I hope the way she treated her people at HP and other places comes to light in this battle.. It will get real spicy…

  23. amk | November 10th, 2009 at 02:28 pm

Winski – As an engineer who had a high regard for HP, I was disgusted when carly left a marquee name in tatters. And yet Greg seems fascinated by her. ;)

  24. JMC | November 10th, 2009 at 02:28 pm

Fiorina almost bankrupted an excellent company. Is this the kind of nonsensical detail she focused on instead? Really–the far right must have it in their noodles that dissing women who have actually accomplished something will be good for a lot of votes — not? Perhaps that’s why Palin quit her governorship: to prove that she wasn’t the kind of woman who dirtied her hands doing something useful. Why do people still call her “Governor” instead of “Ma’am”

  25. Tena | November 10th, 2009 at 02:32 pm

“belligerent drinkers are more dangerous anyway.”

Don’t get me started. I did felony appeals when I was practicing law and really, alcohol is one of the most dangerous recreational substances around.

Nobody gets ripped and then robs a gas station. If someone suggests it, everyone will spend the next two hours talking about it and expanding on it until someone decides that Hey! We’re out of snacks and I’m starving – lets go get some. They get in car, go to the gas station, buy snacks and come back and keep planning the thing. I know how it works – there are many a primrose path you go down when you’re high and you never take the shortest distance anywhere.

People do get likkered up and rob gas stations, shoot their wives, shoot themselves, beat on their relatives – it’s a factor in probably 80% of violent crimes.

  26. Ethan | November 10th, 2009 at 02:38 pm

Paul W, that’s a big misconception. 400,000 misdemeanor possession arrests in the last 10 years. That’s almost 110 PER DAY over that stretch, with more than a majority being young African-American males (twice the demographic proportionately):

Yes and they are still busting them at the border here right and left – which breaks my heart. They got something like entire doublewide trailer packed with weed the other day. I wept.

We could put an end to a lot of the violence at the border if we just legalized. And it’s the only way that violence will subside.

  29. Tim | November 10th, 2009 at 02:48 pm

It doesn’t matter if Sen. Boxer loses. Traditionally, Senators, once elected, are always referred to as Senator. Same with Ambassadors, Presidents, and justices. But not House members.

Minor point, but shows how dumb this line of attack is on many many levels.

  30. PorkBelly | November 10th, 2009 at 03:15 pm

I’m a PhD and if someone calls me “mister”, I correct them.

I don’t see anything wrong with it.

  31. quarterback | November 10th, 2009 at 03:31 pm

It was petty, petulant, and egotistical, not to mention reflective of a misplaced sense of entitlement to the position — that title was conferred as a privilge by the voters of her state (to their great shame and ignomy), not something she deserves because of hard work.

It was also condescending and tone deaf, but just so typical of the vapid Boxer. Good idea to remind voters of her cattiness and shallowness.

  32. oddjob | November 10th, 2009 at 03:36 pm

I guess people just waltz into office with no work done on their part, huh?

  33. oddjob | November 10th, 2009 at 03:37 pm

If you’re going to be stupid you ought to at least look like something other than insane, you know?

  34. Nellcote | November 10th, 2009 at 04:15 pm

Way to piss off republican women who might also want proper respect for their efforts in the world. You go Carly!

  35. News Reference | November 11th, 2009 at 02:21 am

It’s sad enough that right wing misogynists like nickleback don’t understand how grossly insulting they are to women, but the fact that Republican frauds like Fiorina are actively working against respect for women illustrates how the entire Republican Party is bad for women.

Women that work for the Republican Party are working against women.

Yeah, and George W. Bush was an “accomplished” businessman before he took up presidintin’.

Replying to the article’s comment that “After all, this doesn’t seem like the most pressing concern of voters,” sbj said, in part, “Neither is health insurance for the uninsured!”

sbj is either living in a hole, or he/she is one. Healthcare has consistently been cited as a major concern for Americans, insured or not.

  38. News Reference | November 11th, 2009 at 03:23 pm

While over 44,000 Americans die every year, right wingers like sbj feel a need to change the subject to protect their corporate masters.

Polls saying that healthcare is consistently a major concern for most Americans are irrelevant to right wing propagandists, right wingers only count the people that agree with them.

I call Carly perjurer since she lied in open court about the HP/Compaq merger.
