Car-Bombing Plot Against Reid Questioned By GOP Candidate Was Real, Police Report Confirms

A fun dust-up out in Nevada: Harry Reid’s reelection campaign has sent over a police report proving that Reid was in fact the target of a murder attempt by car bomb, despite a GOP challenger’s questioning of the episode.

Former TV anchor Sue Lowden, who’s hoping to challenge Reid in 2010, went on talk radio recently and raised doubts about a 1981 car bomb plot targeting Reid soon after he’d been chair of the Nevada Gaming Commission.

The candidate said she’d never heard of the tale in an exchange with the radio host, even though it was addressed in news accounts at the time. When the host joked that Reid might be claiming that another bombing was directed at him, Lowden laughed.

But the police report details the attempted murder of Reid by car bomb:

Harry Reid became a victim of an attempt homicide when an electrical device was found linked from the engine to the fuel tank in an apparent attempt to ignite the fuel. Condition indicating installation of the device were first noticed by the witness, Landera Reid wife of the vistim [sic], on 7-28-81 at approx. 1130 AM.

The Electrical Device was a wire leading from the distributor to the fuel tank.

Lowden’s spokesperson has said she genuinely didn’t know about the incident and doesn’t view car bombs as a “laughing matter.” And a spokesperson for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Brian Walsh, is slamming Reid, whose campaign has been hitting back at Lowden, for keeping the affair alive.

“It speaks to the desperation of the Senate Majority Leader that at a time when Nevada’s unemployment is over 13 percent his campaign has now spent three full days trying to breathe life into something that took place almost 30 years ago,” Walsh emails.

I love how they start s*h*i*t and then turn around and accuse the person who answers the s*h*i*t of being the one who is in the wrong.

    Jeeeezz!

Dear lord. These people just don’t know when to stop digging, do they?

    In A Nutshell.

Republican Sue Lowden tried to Swiftboat Senator Reid.

Republican Brian Walsh now attacks Senator Reid for not letting Republican Sue Lowden get away with her Swiftboating attack on him.

“A very reliable source tells FishbowlDC that Fox News VP Michael Clemente met with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs this morning and reached what some are calling a “truce.”

“Clemente then met with the FNC Washington bureau and encouraged staff to remain “fair and balanced.”

I don’t post here very often, but why is “sbj” even allowed to post on this site. He is so tiresome. The right-wing talking points and the dire warnings of disaster for the Democratic Party is so very very very boring!! He should be banned for being lame and boring.

Shorter Gee Oh Pee: How DARE you turn our despicable behavior back upon us?

    Shorter Reid: Beep beep, mutha—kas!

    @sbj

You have been here long enough to know there’s an open thread late in the day. You go off topic in so many threads it’s absurd.

They can’t “remain” something they’ve never actually been.

    Hear, hear! Please ban sbj.

@rover: The FNC/WH kerfluffle has been covered here and this is new, relevant information.

    @Rover27

We need SBJ around here to pitch batting practice. It keeps us sharp, so we are always ready to face big league pitching.

Others post off topic here all the time – give me a break. Besides, who the hell cares about car bombing Reid?

Now the White House has them just where they want them. FAUX news will not be able to control their selves. Beck or Hannity or some other Faux News ranter will not be able to restrain their language, and then the White House will be able to really go after FAUX News for breaking their word, or for having just flat out lied about how they would cover The White House.

    ……………………….

Now we really know where you stand. You really worry about the US drone attacks on Al-Qaeda in Pakistan,

But you do not care that The Majority Leader of the Senate was the victim of an attempted Terrorist Attack, Intended to kill him.

Now we know what sort of an anti-social cretin you truly are.

  16. sbj | October 28th, 2009 at 05:23 pm

“Now we know what sort of an anti-social cretin you truly are.”

Well, I’m glad we’ve got that cleared up!

  17. Liam | October 28th, 2009 at 05:28 pm

Good. I am glad too that you accept that it is an accurate description of you.

    Game, Set, Match.

  18. Andy | October 28th, 2009 at 05:32 pm

Why would you have to encourage your bureau staff to remain “fair and balanced.” unless they weren’t? Sounds like… “Why did you have Santiago transferred off the base if you gave orders that he not be touched? And you said your men always follow your orders…”

  19. Liam | October 28th, 2009 at 05:43 pm

    @Andy,

FAUX News has their very own patented method of remaining Fair & Balanced:

First, they call President Obama “A Commie”

Then to balance it out, they call him “A Fascist”

See how fair and balanced that is? Everyone knows that Commies and Fascists are exact opposites of each other. Fair & Balanced, The FAUX News way!

    Two words:

    AMERICAN TALIBAN.

  21. Baby Hugo | October 28th, 2009 at 06:40 pm

Who was trying to kill Harry Reid? What corruption was he involved with on the Nevada Gaming Commission? Alas, we will probably never know because of the decrepit old man’s failing mind. And are we sure it was only one car bomb? Harry is notorious for his miscounting.

  22. Bilgeman | October 28th, 2009 at 07:37 pm

    Mr. Sargent:
“The Electrical Device was a wire leading from the distributor to the fuel tank”

That won’t do it. Mixture’s way too rich and even if they put a spark plug in the top of the tank, the car’s occupant will be protected by the car’s floor pans from the the contents if the tank ruptures.

The occupant is unlikely to be disabled, so he can, (and will), jump out of the car and run like heck.
    Might get some burns,though.

If it had been the Mob, and they were trying to gakk Reid, they have better people than that.

So it was some amateur prank, a scare-job, or a publicity stunt.

  23. Bilgeman | October 28th, 2009 at 07:40 pm

    Liam:
“But you do not care that The Majority Leader of the Senate was the victim of an attempted Terrorist Attack, Intended to kill him”

Oh, unclench your ******, willya? It’s cutting off your oxygen.

He wasn’t the Senate Majority Leader at the time, he was just some bozo on the Nevada Gaming Commission.

    Half-wit.

Does one’s job mean that one’s life is more or less valuable if one is the target of a car-bombing plot? I think not. I see a lack of compassion for one’s fellow man being expressed here, and it’s troubling. I pray daily for the protection of all members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle. I can dislike a particular politician or political party’s position on an issue, but still not wish them harm or dismiss threats against them as being harmless because of politics. We are all Americans, and whether we like it or not, we’re all having to deal with the same issues. Disagreements don’t have to reach the level of hating someone or wishing harm on others. Imo, when disagreements reach these levels, all of us suffer the consequences in one way or another.

It is in the interest of big mining and the nuke industry to get rid of H Reid, but as a citizen of nv why would you want to put an impotent GOP bozo in office? so international corporations and banking cliques can get back to the rape of this state. you should be ashamed….
