Chuck Brown services slated for May 29

Long before he became the Godfather of GoGo and one of the District’s most well-known music legends, Chuck Brown would come to the intersection of 7th and T streets to shine shoes for patrons attending concerts at the Howard Theatre.

And so it was befitting that commanders from the Metropolitan Police and Fire Departments would be standing on the same street corner, renamed “Chuck Brown Way,” to go over the logistics for his public wake next Tuesday at the Howard Theatre.

“As a young kid Chuck Brown talked about how he got a whole dollar from Louis Armstrong as he sihned his shoes and that was a big deal for him,” said Chip Ellis, one of the owners of the Howard Theatre. “Chuck has always looked at the Howard Theatre as a place where he has wanted to play and obviously he got his opportunity.”

The public viewing for Chuck Brown will be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 29, according to family spokesperson Priscilla Clarke. On May 31, there will be a public memorial service for Brown at the DC Convention Center from 12 p.m to 3 p.m.

Brown died last week at the age of 75. Ellis said while he wished that the GoGo music legend would have gotten a chance to play in the renovated theater he reopened recently, he said, “God had another plan.”

President Barack Obama’s support of gay marriage splits African Americans

If there is a way to miraculously part the Red Sea without black Christians drowning over the same- sex marriage debate, I think civil rights icon and theologian Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. and his son Otis Moss III, pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, may have found it.

Recently, father and son laid out a two-pronged scenario that offers a way for concerned African American Christians to oppose President Obama’s embrace of gay marriage without abandoning him in the upcoming election.

President Barack Obama’s lasting image

"Star Wars" turns 35 tomorrow and there are a couple of very funny bits going around the web to celebrate. One is NPR's fun hashtag and the other is this highly vulgar, but supremely hilarious mashup of Samuel Jackson and Darth Vader.
