Okay, we’re trying something new: Every day at around this time, we’ll be presenting a Happy Hour Open Thread, with some links to get the chatter started. * Americans United for Change, the big liberal group that came under fire from liberal bloggers in our story today for not advertising on the blogs, is now saying they will make the blogs part of their ad strategy. The group sends over a statement:
We fully appreciate the important contributions of the progressive blogosphere and have plans to include blog ads in the near future as we continue to expand our media efforts. We are currently examining our online strategy and how we can more effectively communicate our message through online channels. Blog ads will most definitely be a part of that strategy.
* Ben Smith accurately characterizes today’s blogger revolt.
* The White House says that Obama didn’t bow to any Saudi king.

Ok, your profile of Bachmann – you say that all of her attributes could end up making her a star.
Ok – a star maybe in the same sense Sarah Palin is a “star” cause I can guarantee you that Palin and Bachmann are only “star” to the looney 25%.
So that begs a question – can you be a “star” if you’re only seen as one by a small minority of people? I mean I know she’s a star with the nuts, just like Palin is – but what does that really mean?

Like the open thread. Also, a thought crossed my mind today. You didn’t post on it, but there has been all this talk about the “tea-parties” that are going to happen on April 15th

This “tea-party” event is being really played up by Fox News, they are disbatching correspondents, all day coverage etc, etc…anyway, it started to remind me of the Fox News coverage that went on for CPAC – I mean they played it up good, all day coverage, building up to the big moment of Rush Limbaugh’s (please button your shirt) speech. Then, once Limbaugh got up there jumping around with his fists in the air shouting “I hope he fails”, the blogs and the rest of the MSM started picking it up and then you had people saying “here he is, the leader of the GOP” and he was up there all sweaty, in all black, jumping all around – it ended up being a laughing stock to the rest of us out here- and then all of the sudden when Fox realized that all of their attention to the speech was perceived negatively by everyone that doesn’t watch their coverage they stopped showing the Rush clips, they stopped talking about him…I believe thinkprogress or mediamatters actually did a piece on this showing Fox’s mentions of Rush leading up to CPAC and then Fox’s mentions of Rush after it started being blasted around all the other stations and Sunday morning shows and Fox’s mentions basically ceased. Anyway, I do have a point, this is what I think could happen with the “tea-party” thing – I mean let’s use some common sense here…who do we think is going to show up at these events…do you think it is going to be those moderate, some-what reasonable Republicans that are going to show up to this event? Or, will it be the militia-esque Republican crowd? Is this the image that the GOP is going to embrace to rebuild it’s party and expand the tent so to speak? My theory on this is that if these events get mucho coverage from Fox and it’s mainly the fringe that show up – it is going to reflect very poorly on the GOP…in fact…I think that 30% of the people watching will be applauding the “tea-parties” and 70% of the people are going to say “what the hell is going on with the Republican Party?” There are even some Republican Congressmen going to these events, mainly in the South, but none-the-less they are going. They think this is a good idea? They think that going to a “tea-party”, promoted by Fox News and attended by who knows who is a good idea? I am telling you it could be terrible PR once it starts blasting out around the rest of the Country. But that’s one of the core problems with Republican’s right now – they really only talk to each other about how right they are and don’t realize how it is perceived in the mainstream – case in point – someone at Fox News originally thought it would be a great idea to promote Rush and blast his speech at CPAC all over the airwaves. We shall see how the “tea-parties” play out – send all the Fox people and right wing bloggers that you want, but if I was an elected official, you wouldn’t catch me there – no way.
Just to clarify my comments on the other thread, I see nothing wrong with the liberal and progressive orgs advertising on liberal and progressive blogs. I was ONLY talking about the official Dem party. There are a lot of clown type comments on the other thread from people who obviously never go on any liberal or progressive blogs but if they ever did they would notice that some of the people complaining the most about President Obama when it comes to his banking strategy, state secrets abuse, and the breaking of any campaign promises is the lefty blogosphere. We hold President Obama to account on serious issues a lot more than the right does and I wouldn’t want that undermined by the Dem party subsidizing the big lefty blogs.

And just to point out that there is no justification at all for Goldfarb even having any of his work referred to except in the fringes of society. If he didn’t work for the Weekly Standard its likely he couldn’t get a job for most high school newspapers. Thats why I feel no need to explain something to him that a five year old should understand.
The open thread just may give those of us who don’t always get our thoughts together immediately with a new post another chance for a bite at the apple. And, yeah, I just watched the Obama tape a couple of times and it does look like a bow. So this clearly is the end of the world.

I like the open thread, Greg, though your commenters have a way of talking about whatever they want to talk about in ostensibly non-open threads too. (I’m not suggesting that’s a bad thing, either–just saying.)
Tena, you make a good point about Bachmann being a star among the nuts. With all the coverage she’s been attracting lately, it’s easy to forget that the people who actually agree with her ravings are few and far between. She may be notorious, but she’s not a star.
Greg – I think that an open happy hour thread is a fine idea in that it allows a bit more latitude for bringing up issues some of us might feel important or which may be only peripherally relevant to what’s come before.

Yes and yes. Their degree of self-isolation combined with their frantic extremism makes them appear like a sizzling hornet’s nest or like the really crazy ward out at Happy Acres. It’s a valuable service they provide to the sane and measured portion of the polity when they define themselves in such a manner.
SG–I think your point about the Dems advertising on liberal blogs is a good one. More generally, I can’t help feeling a little uncomfortable with the assumption of some bloggers that they should get a specific financial reward for their support of liberal candidates. Lots of people knocked themselves out in this election. I thought it was about the public good.
AllButCertain – “the public good” ought to be the senior consideration and I think in the cases we are talking of, it is. And we don’t want to get into something like what my “B Street” joke pointed to. But on the other hand, the continued viability of these sites is, I think, important and directing advertising revenue towards them is not merely politically prudent but would be forward-looking as well, if one wishes to see voices other than Time-Warner and GE continuing to monopolize our communication channels.

Bernie, I think the John Amato quote illustrates the two things that are in tension: “These groups actually believe that we should promote their stuff for free. Do they not understand that we need funds to sustain our viability?” Obviously, it’s important to keep these alternative voices thriving, though it’s an open question whether a given ad source is necessary. Back in the day, I think Josh Marshall indicated that TPM advertising was entirely separate from its editorial function, which is how an ad for an Ann Coulter book could show up there–and that that was part of maintaining editorial freedom. In answer to Amato, I would say yes. You should promote “their stuff” for free if the alternative is to demand something like a quid pro quo.

Concerning Goldfarb’s worry about insufficient money being wasted, it shouldn’t be too difficult to look at Gates’ budget and realize that more money is being spent. The point of the changes, however, is to spend the money where it will do some good rather than waste it the way Goldfarb recommends.
As for Goldfarb’s concern about the relatively few aircraft carriers that we have (10?), he should realize that aircraft carriers are fast becoming dodos. One Exocet can reduce a fleet to impotence if its main raison d’etre is taken out. Also, he forgets to comment on the problems that his wonderful jet is having and maybe it isn’t such a bad idea to drop it, especially since it hasn’t even been used at all in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Does he really foresee any possibility of us fighting a war with another superpower during the time that this jet will be operational? We spend on the military over three times what the other superpowers and Iran spend put together.

I got a new lap top for Christmas Dell Inspiron 8 mini and as you may know it doesn’t have a CD drive, but I have an external CD drive to use. When I insert the Windows XP setup disk into the drive it doesn’t start the setup it just show me the contents of the CD. I’ve tried to click on the setup icon with the file extension .exe and it won’t start but jeust tell me that there is no application to run the program and i can’t boot from the removable devices either. SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE.

Hi Guys, My first show was the 2003 Atlantic Championships at 22 years old. I was a former football player at Sacred Heart University. I Followed a plan by Brian Cannone of Fitness Atlantic fame and the plan allowed me to compete in my first show and get shredded like I never looked before – my eating habits are still the same now and the information I learned will be with me the rest of my life.
